I didn't use it with an ejection seat, if that's what you mean. Yeah, you're probably right. It's not. But when everyone was using them, they sure SEEMED like sport mains. Oldest sport canopy still in production

If you look back at this statement after a few hundred jumps, I would be interested in your thoughts about it. Please listen to your instructors and other advisors. Thanks, Glen. I'm probable thinking more of the Dacron used on dedicated CRW canopies, which is VERY large, to make for easy grabbing and less line burns. It makes sense that it would also come in "normal" size for non-CRW canopies. _____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ?

Since Triathalons are frequently used for CRW, I think that is the main idea behind the Dacron option. Dacron lines are preferred for CRW because they will not cut through arms and legs as quickly as Spectra in the event of an entanglement. So, if you're not doing CRW and just want best performance and lowest pack volume, use Spectra. If you're going to do any CRW, use Dacron. should it be required to jump without an AAD?

Your logic is faulty. You, like most jumpers, have never NEEDED an AAD. Therefore, all the jumps that you have made without one do not show that one could do you good in the right circumstance. If you had a track record showing: - Multiple hits in the head without losing consciousness - Several instances of losing function of both arms or hands and still being able to deploy a canopy - Having dozens of crises occur at low altitude without losing altitude awareness Then, I would say that you had a case to say that you had built confidence in not needing an AAD. What you are saying is similar to saying that, "I have so much confidence in my packing, I don't need a reserve". Sure, if you have 1000 jumps without a malfunction, then you actually didn't need a reserve for those particular jumps. Will that hold true for jump # 1001? Who knows. But, it's the sort of thing that if you need it and don't have it, you'll never need it again. (Reserve or AAD) High performance aircraft use ejection seats to provide a last resort for un-fixable problems. Things can happen in these airplanes that progress so quickly that there is no time to work out the details - for even the best of aviators. The seat is not a requirement for the aircraft to work, however, it is existing technology that any reasonable person can see the benefit of. It can be added to the aircraft without much change to the performance or cost, and even steely-eyed test pilots like to be able to go home at the end of the day. Dude - You're the one with no jumps asking how to get by for free in an expensive sport that we all have figured out ways to pay for. And you're insulting the first guy to give you some advice ??? He's got 67 more jumps than you do. I think that you can take your comment about his 5 years in the sport and shove it. Presumably, as he becomes even more fearless, Alti will continue to update his altimeter face, thanks to his heartfelt endorsement. I'll make a point of never borrowing his altimeter. Hackish, I'm curious to know how you determined the speed data that you have stated above, if the AAD did not fire. The released brake could be caused by a few things. There are several brake-locking systems in use. Have a knowledgable person look at the brake-locking system to see if there is wear or something that would cause a premature release. Make sure that you are setting the brakes properly. Just think more about pushing your body "sideways", rather than "up", as you exit. The tendancy is to push up as you arch and exit at the same time. Many newer jumpers doing hop n pops are so intent on getting stable that they are arching long before they get to the door. But, if you push sideways first, then arch after you pass through the door, you won't go up as much. On a Twin Otter, it would be pretty difficult to hit the horiz. stabilizer, as it's fairly high. The Caravan is not as high, but still mostly out of the way. The worst are Beechcraft - KAs and 99s. Make a point of noticing the attitude of the airplane in various stages of flight. As it's climbing, look at the angle of the horizon, compared to the wing or another horizontal member, like the bottom of the window frame. You will see that the angle is different from when it levels off on jumprun. If your jump plane flies jumprun with the flaps down, see how that changes the angle. Listen to the engines at various power settings and listen to the wind noise at different airspeeds. Don't just be a brainless passenger. Experience and observation will tell you a lot about what's going on with the airplane. Such knowedge is part of the "airmanship" that makes for a competent jumper, and can save your life someday.
