Yep, they deal with tripped out fucked up people on a regualr basis. Every cop I know works with one overriding rule: Everybody goes home tonight (or to jail) If at all possible, everybody wants to wake up tomorrow morning, and they do everything they can to make that happen. But when somebody starts freaking out and draws something black and/or shiny, you have to assume it's a gun/knife/weapon.
