    Gear Checks

Ah yes, the new site... Give us a call, Peter likey... I'm with Rauk on this one too. Kind of got into the "self-responsibility" when I would have to solo and wait in the TF visitor center until a car would pull up, so a whoffo could be my GC in case I went in... Four eyes are better than two, but I never put on a rig unless I am satisfied that it is "perfect", and all three connections are at least routed... BASE safety is your responsibility, and your responsibility only, in the end... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

  3. When I first saw it, I had no idea what mal it was supposed to address. And when I heard what it was supposed to be for, I couldn't see any pros, just more complexity and more theory. Is pilot chute in tow a problem with pin rigs? I've seen a couple, but only when people got new velcro that was way too strong and wide. Pin tension seems BS to me, if I take my rig and pull from the inside out to simulate an extremely tight packjob, it doesn't affect the pin tension AT ALL! And we are talking about a "huge" 42" PC, at 60mph, trying to slide two slippery pins 0.5 inches through slippery closing loop. Seems that pilot chutes not doing what they are supposed to do would be a better direction to go. I wouldn't want to tie a bridle and 32" PC to my wrist and throw it out of a car at 25mph... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
  4. I was wondering why you weren't thinking about slicing a line with a hook knife... Do you jump with one, or do you just believe that it can't get bad enough as long as you are high enough to pull a reserve with a skyhook? --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

With the golf ball idea, how about making a lightweight skyball tennis ball, not with lead, but something that would be quiet and just heavy enough? Same idea with the light weight string, then a climbing rope... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

    xXx on E-BAY

In case you are at work and can't get on ebay... Movie Prop/Wardrobe: This is Killer. This is the parchute harness worn by Vin in the movie XXX. You can see him wearing this in the opening scene with him driving the corvette off the bridge. Will include a Studio COA as well as the photos you see in the picture. A great one of a kind collectible. S/H/I/P is $24.95. This is being sold as a MOVIE PROP and NOT to be used in anyway. New owner must sign a release stating that this has no use as a actual parachute harness. Priceless... Go Vin, go!!! --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
  8. Anyone ever see this as an option? I don't skydive as much anymore, but a couple times on my Stiletto, when it spun up, it would take me a couple seconds in a stressful situation to figure out which direction to kick. If one of the lines, or the brake lines, were red, or blue, or black, it would be much easier to see a candy cane of twists... Just an idea, --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
  9. Why is there so much negativity in BASE, and so much trying to squash people's excitement about things they love so much? Ok, so you don't care that Johnny came out #1 of 70 in Moscow. Why post to tell the world that it is somehow less of an accomplishment? Why post just to dampen the excitement of a new jumper, trying to help other jumpers, by slamming on their instructor that did a great job? I think JU was there to have fun too... Everyone was there to have fun... If you didn't give a crap, why log protests? Can't we all just get along? Seriously... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

    1st Jump Classes

I've spent a lot of time at TF, and saw a lot of courses while I was doing my own thing... I've seen BR, Vertigo, and Johnny Utah's, and a couple others... They are all excellent- if there was one that had students going in 50% of the time, you would have heard about it already... Call all the manufacturers and see who you get a good vibe with over the phone, that might be the place to start, and clicking with the people that are going to show you BASE is more important than anything, in my opinion... I've seen two of Johnny Utah's courses, and had friends in each one of them. Not only is Johnny a badass BASE jumper, but he is also an excellent teacher. Most of all, his courses are a week long, cost less, and the majority of his students leave with 20-25 video debriefed jumps throughout the week... But, what do I know... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
  12. Anyone else get this with a PC9? I've tried opening it and letting it dry out in dry air, resetting it with the reset button, leaving the battery out for days... Sometimes it comes back, it will work fine, then this error comes on, and if I take the tape out, it won't load back in... No pattern to this mess, either... BTW, anyone have a MiniDV camera that got smacked by a riser and tore the wideangle/lens off? I need a MiniDV for a bulletcam setup, so it just needs to record remotely... Thanks, --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

  14. What does it take to get a BASE-style punishment? Just makes me sick about the incredible lack of respect that some people can show. What was it that you were trying to accomplish? I have over 100 jumps off that bridge in the last 6 months, practicing aerials, and generally enjoying the fact that it is a legal bridge that I can practice at. I can't even mention how "unhappy" I would be if it got burned. I think we should not only be upset at what they are doing to us, as current jumpers, but also the jumpers that are still to do their FJC, that might not have the oppertunity that we had at TF... YOU KNEW IT WAS DISRESPECTFUL TO A TOWN THAT HAS BEEN SO GOOD TO US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Check out the link at the bottom for a video from last weekend, I love the TF bridge... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
  15. I really, really, really want to BASE jump. Can you drive me to the A, my car is broke. And I don't know how to pack, can you do that for me too? Oh, I get scared easily, can you do something about that too? I wasn't like this, was I? Hehe --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

    BASE Article

I just wonder why non-jumpers waste their time figuring us out. I just want to jump, pure and simple. Maybe if the good doctors tried a tandem, they would have a better understanding... Not a bad article, I was getting ill from the first couple paragraphs, but it got better with the theoretical medical gibberish... To all doctors and researchers: You don't have to waste your time anymore, trying to figure out why I love something so much that you can't even comprehend... Just make it legal... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
  17. I think the thing to remember with experienced BASE jumpers at a DZ is that they see BASE and skydiving as very different things. But, a couple of things that I would recommend: - Don't go up to them and say that you want to try BASE, that you heard about a really tall antenna, so it shouldn't be any worse than a low, fixed-object skydive. - GET A RIG!!! Tons of people at the DZ that know that I BASE jump come up to me and ask me to get them into BASE. Nobody is going to get you into BASE, and you are asking for someone (if you are asking how to ask BASE jumpers to take you out, you probably aren't buddies with them already) to take you out and have them take responsibility for everything that you are going to do, and everything that you will do in the near future. Simply, everyone wants to "try" BASE, but when you have a rig, it shows that you are serious, and that you put the thought into BASE enough that you shelled out some hard-earned cash, that you could have easily spent somewhere else to get a rig... - The one thing that I am certain about is that when I think about my first jump, I smile. Start talking to them like they are a normal person, instead of the superman that they are, and you will become, and ask them how they got into BASE, what was their first jump was like, ask what kind of gear they like, etc... People respond much better when they get to talk about themselves, instead of having to hear about how you can't think about anything but BASE, but don't have a BASE rig because you are broke, but are also spending $250 a weekend on jump tickets... - Offer to groundcrew. You'll find out how much you want to jump when you have to leave your house at 1am to get 3 seconds of freefall from the local A, 85 miles each way, and then go to work and not act tired. It isn't all fun and games... But most importantly, when you are stuck in a car for an hour and a half each way, with jumpers getting excited about the jump, and all they can think about is BASE, it is a good time to talk to them and ask your questions then. - Read and read and read about BASE... Not just what a tailgate is, why it works, or what kind of setup and delay you would take from 200, 400, 700, 1000, and 2000 feet, and anywhere in between. And why there isn't a good answer for any of the above since every object is different, landing areas, wires, streets, etc... Do you know how many people have already died in BASE, how many people get hurt, and what are some of the primary causes? Its all here on the internet, you can learn it and quench the thirst that you claim to have. Satisfy it by reading and reading. I bet you can't make it to the end of every post on here, and dz.com isn't the best internet resource for BASE knowledge. The more you know, the more respect and "realness" you will present to this experienced jumper, and I'm sure he will take that into account. I think there is a fundamental flaw, and its only semantics, but you can't ask what are experienced jumpers looking for in their new students. They aren't. 200 jumps is just a suggestion, and you will find that it isn't that people are trying to keep you out with less. If you start with 300, you won't regret waiting another 100. I wanted to BASE since I got on the first plane, but had over 450 before I did my first fixed object. I didn't regret waiting... There are tons of articles to read on here about what canopy size to get. Maybe you should already know it. What if this experience jumper asks you what kind of canopy you are going to get, and you just start studdering? BASE isn't a derivative of skydiving- it is it's own craziness, with very different gear and techniques. And it is just a tad bit dangerous. You owe it to yourself and everyone that loves you to prepare for it as completely as possible before you take that first leap... Ok, I'm out. I just got put on nights at work, there is nothing to do here, I've already packed my rig... Damn, I love BASE... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

  22. Let me ask this: If I magically appeared in Norway with a rig over my shoulders, and wanted to jump the cliffs... Are you saying that even if it is legal, it isn't free? How much and to whom would I have to pay to jump a cliff that is already several thousand dollars away? Would I have to pay club dues? Pay for each jump I make? Pay for a heli that the club gets a cut of the profit? Don't know anything about it, just asking... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
  23. I'm upset that my US rights, concerning illegal search and seizure, promised by the United States Constitution, don't apply in Norway... What is the "business" at Kjerag? A helicopter? Why is Kjerag ruined, or what makes it a BASE DZ? I remember hearing that chewing gum is illegal in some growing Asian countries. If I ever go there, and am grateful that they allow me to jump their 1000+' building legally, I won't bring gum on that trip, even if I think it is stupid. Respect for the local laws when I am out traveling. I would also rather smoke than drink beer, but if I can't because thats what it takes to flik those, I will wait until I can break some silly laws in my own country. Different countries, different laws that you don't have to agree with, or visit. Don't get me wrong, I think it is silly based on my American upbringing, but the NPS doesn't even allow you to jump similar cliffs in US parks, even if you give them all the urine they want. Go jump the local A, and if you get busted, I would imagine that the cop would search the car taht you brought, and wouldn't be impressed if you had stuff in teh car, or on your person. The price you pay for incredible legal jumps, with bored uptight cops, in a culture that I know very little about. In fact, walk into the police station or "congress office" in Norway, with your BASE rig, and tell them how stupid it is... Take that energy back home and send some letters to the people here that keep us from some sick stuff in our own backyard. I would rahter jump some Es in Cali before I went across the planet. There are tall cliffs in a lot of other places, the United States included... I still look forward to going to Norway, as part of my next Europe trip. And Norway was after Amsterdam... Sucks, but sometimes you have to play the game to get access to legal big walls. Never been to Norway, but it seems like a lot of sweet sites are getting some heat put on them recently. --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime
