I just want to restate that with my incident, it cleared itself before I realized I had a lineover... And, in my opinion, I would still rather have the line run outside of the slider and guide ring for slider down. BASE jumps and my safety are worth the hassle of rerouting the brake lines... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

Seriously, back to us... Yes, it is fun landing in trees, much easier on the feet when they never touch the ground on landing... Happy BASE birthday to Rauk, peace and harmony is in our city... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

I'm the truly gifted and ultra-talented jumper that bps was talking about that had the most recent slider down, tailgated lineover... I am a slow packer. Not because I work slow, but because I feel my packjob is overly anal-retentive, and I like packing anyways. That jump was about my 185th within a rapid year of jumping. In fact, I packed that one to freefall a sub-300' B that we have in town, but due to winds, called that one off. Went to TF the next weekend, pulled off another double, and had what I thought was a 90 left. Got on the risers, and it kept turning, and by the time it was self-cleared, it was already a 180 that was easier to keep it going, so I ended up risering another 90 so I was pointed towards the shore... Point being- People have 180s. People get hurt. And I could only believe that if I packed nicer and cleaner than the other guy, I would avoid most of these. I don't know what happened with this jump. I believe that my packjob is the best, like everyone, and I remember thinking that this was "the nicest packjob ever, EVER". A couple days earlier, I was going to freefall our little Bs, so I put that extra bit of love in, and spent a little more time... It has shaken my confidence that things will always go right if you don't f-up. Since then, I KNOW that there is a roulette wheel of chance, somewhere, and sometimes it won't come out nice. And you might have a lot of time to deal with it, and you might not have a lot of time to deal with it... But it will happen, so expect it... But since then, I expect the unexpected more than ever... Seriously, a slider-down lineover, with a tailgate, on the best B packjob that I could stick in there? --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

I want to set the story straight... I DON'T JUMP WITH NCJUMPJUNKIE OR LEROYDB!!! Just Rauk... Still trying to decide if you are banned for life from application from the B Team, or if that will just be a standard one year suspension... That is all... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

Hey Tom, Can we start a regional subforum in the dz.com BASE Board for the Carolinas, so that I don't have to read their childish internet fighting? Seems like we had this problem last year here, a lot of it went away after a couple conversations and face-to-face meetings.. One dick can F- things up for every BASE jumper within hundreds of miles... Don't be a dick... I was too busy jumping this weekend, and I come back to this? Hehe, kids... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

Damn, how broke are you that you are trying to spray something on the parachute that you rely on to save your life? I remember when I was a little kid, I heard a stand-up comic say something about "budget skydiving- things not to do..." Be careful... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

Hey, I thought we were flaming the other guy... BTW, is that your BASE gear in your avitar? Everyone wants to get into BASE, and I'm sure you know it isn't fixed object skydiving. No matter how much you think you know, at 100 skydives, you are just learning what the term "floater" means, and putting down the guy with 200! skydives that doesn't know the slang... BASE is a lot of fun, but when things go bad, they go very bad, very close to the ground, with no plan B parachute. Soon, you will have a spinner at the dz, and you will go through the cutaway sequence that you practiced. And you'll pick up the freebag and main in the huge, grass landing area... You don't get to do that in BASE, think about it... Not to be a dick, but seriously, don't get into BASE with 50ish skydives thinking that you'll never see your legbone sticking out of your pantleg... No promises either way, but I am getting tired of hearing that "I know I have 50 skydives, but I think I know it all faster than the other guy. I'm ready for BASE". Sometimes I feel, and the faceless-ness of the internet is a big part of this, that some people have no respect for their own safety and health... You wouldn't have got into skydiving by jumping a plane with a buddy that has 50 skydives, with some gear that he had left over with a DOM of 1980, would you? Its been done, but not by me... Make it as safe, or as dangerous as you want... ENJOY GRAVITY!!! --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

I think it has a lot to do with a number of factors- the region that you live near for the closest manufacturer, who you took a FJC with, what your mentor or other local jumpers have, etc... If there was one that sucked so bad that people were spinning in all the time, you would have heard about it... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

If you want to argue, lets argue... But, send me a PM when you want to meet up for a jump, it would be much more fun... Glad to see that dz.com let you back on... P --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime

Hmmm, let's talk about politics next... Why can't my relationship, and your relationship, with whatever God you worship, be personal. I don't understand why a God that is so loving and caring, and teaches such, prompts internet slamming within a community that is so close and tight... can i leave Cypres batteries in my Cypres through the winter?
peterk replied to Newbie's topic in Gear and Rigging
$80 batteries, that only last 2 years with mimimal use, are leaking if they are left in for 28 months instead of 24 months? If this is the case, I would encourage repack cycles of much less than 120 days, and forget about 180... --------------- Peter BASE - The Ultimate Victimless Crime -
I think this is an interesting concept. Golf balls have dimples to encourage air to not separate as it curves around. However, I don't think it would help to dimple a wing such as a canopy... There are several other ways to encourage flowing air to follow the curvature of the wing, and postpone airflow separation (stalling)- vortice generators, laminar flow, etc... Most of my limited experience is outside of the ~15mph airspeed, non-rigid nature, and shape of BASE canopies... I was also thinking that small pieces of yarn taped to the inside, top, and bottom of canopies can easily demonstrate airflow patterns, especially near stall, and can be videotaped with the small bullet cam setups. Thin camera wires and big balls could rollover from a legal bridge, in daylight, and get some potentially valuable research video data... I wonder what would be the best way, or if it would be advantageous, to disrupt the smooth airflow surrounding and within a canopy. I also think some kind of cross braces could smooth the marshmallow factor inherent to 7-cells, where the lift vectors of a cell would be used primarily upwards, instead of the wasteful arch that we see with bulbous 7-cell BASE canopies...
