No, it doesn't make you a bad person. It shows that you're not only capable of sympathy, but you're capable of empathy, and you're probably being very supportive of your mom because of it. You'll grieve for your grandpa in your own time, but you're recognizing that your mom needs more support than you do right now, and that's ok.

Deuce. Especially when he tells the boot camp story.

Is it bad to cook a lb of bacon to eat yourself?
Nightingale replied to DeNReN's topic in The Bonfire
Dang...that must be freaky, having your tooth crack apart like that. Tooth breaks have been linked to silver-colored fillings. Was that the kind of filling you had? Some of the horror stories about what's happened to people's teeth years after getting silver fillings freaked me out so much that I paid extra to get white fillings. -
My family is Catholic, and I've only ever dated one guy who was Catholic. My family doesn't care what religion the guy is; they care a lot more about how he treats me.

16 or 18 ga may be too thin. You can get what some piercers call "cheese slicer syndrome" where the jewelry pulls through your skin like one of those wire cheese slicers. Hurts like hell, leaves a bad scar, and you won't have the piercing any more. 14, or even 12, is fairly standard for most new piercings. Talk to your piercer, though. If you've got a good one, they're your best resource. Who are you going to go to?

There have been MANY documented cases of a civilian using a weapon successfully to defend him/herself. Here are only a few: http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/local/news-article.aspx?storyid=49393 http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/13708175.htm http://www.1bakersfield.com/news/read/2/62873 http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=local&id=3836725 You can find many more here: http://www.keepandbeararms.com/

My high school hired one. She told me I should go into film editing. I worked in the industry for two years after I finished college, and realized that filmmaking is much better left as a hobby than a career. They'll give you lots of tests which will indicate your strengths and weaknesses, and likes and dislikes (most of which you already know), and then they'll pick careers in line with your strengths and likes. The problem here is that many times, they'll hit on something you enjoy doing for recreation, and making a career out of it isn't always a good idea. When you take something fun and turn it into something you HAVE to do instead of something you WANT to do, your attitude about it can change dramatically. In many cases, what really makes someone figure out a job is or isn't for them is the work environment, not the work itself. Do you work better with a manager that is constantly checking up on you? That sometimes helps people stay on task. However, others work better without management breathing down their necks, because it makes them nervous and more likely to make mistakes. I know that in my last job, I got about ten times as much done on my boss' days off, because I wasn't constantly fielding his phone calls to check up on me, and I wasn't having to stop what I was doing to explain to him what I was doing. My work style is "tell me what to do, then leave me the heck alone so I can do it, and if I have any questions, I will ask." However, some people (my bro, for example) accomplish a lot more with feedback along the way. He feels like he's left hanging if the boss completely ignores him unless he's got a question. Find out what kind of management style you prefer, and then try to find a job that matches that style. You're more likely to enjoy your job if you can work in an environment that you're comfortable in. Liking the people you work with and being comfortable in your work location go a long way to making sure you're happy in your job. Even if you're just pushing paper, you'll probably be happier in a good work environment than you would be if you had your dream job but ended up with the boss-from-hell.

Well, we do have a much higher population than Australia, so naturally, we'll have a higher number of psychos. I agree with JohnMitchell... if even one of the people in that facility had been armed, the whole thing might've ended much sooner with a much smaller death toll. Maybe it would've been more like this: http://www.snopes.com/crime/dumdum/gunshop.asp http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/article2902.html this article has some good violent crime statistics.

Go barbells, because they're less likely to migrate. When you're healed, you can always change over to rings if you want.
-
Get them done with barbells instead of rings. They do take a bit more care when cleaning, but there's no need to tape (but they do bleed, so you'll probably want bandaids for a few days), and in most cases they heal better, because clothing tends to push the bottom of rings downward, and therefore push the top part forward, which encourages migration (this is much more pronounced in women, but it does occur in men too). Spend as much time without a shirt on as you can.

Private education does not necessarily equal quality education. In many situations, it can be exactly the opposite. It's unfortunate that people tend to equate the quality of the school with how much money they spend on it, or its church affiliation, neither of which is a good indicator. There are great catholic schools. There are terrible catholic schools. Some are better than the local public schools, some are not.

the glazed chocolate cake donut IS a heavy cake donut.

Point taken. Of course, if we all require similar amounts of air to metabolize similar amounts of food, wouldn't the point be moot? The point is that not everybody's metabolic "engine" is as efficient as others. Some will require more oxygen, some less.
-
You missed both my favorites. Glazed chocolate cake from Krispy Kreme, and sugar twist donuts from any regular donut shop.

Yet another item on my long list of social blunders

I think most people would have come to the same conclusion you did. Chances are, she's more embarrassed than you, if she was really talking about decorating. Just send her an email back saying "then forget I said anything" and you can both ignore it. -
In most cases, you don't gain more than the weight of the food you eat. Sometimes you can, and from what I found, it has something to do with the body's oxygen intake, but beyond that I don't know. However, it is possible to gain more than the mass of the food you eat. Sure, if you burn off the calories, you will probably not gain weight, but it's the burning of calories that is the issue sometimes. Some people's bodies tend to store more calories and burn less, even with the same amount of exercise as another person. Metabolism is a factor, as is things like thyroid problems and certain medications, for example, Lithium, which works by affecting the distribution of seratonin. Seratonin is associated with mood regulation, which is why lithium is one of the drugs of choice for bipolar disorder, but it also helps regulate appetite and metabolism. I agree that many times weight gain is the result of a high calorie low exercise lifestyle. However, sometimes it isn't.

Sure, that argument doesn't work when only a few people own guns. The argument is a lot stronger for places like Switzerland, where everyone owns a gun.

It's also funny how people refuse to believe there are any factors to obesity OTHER than laziness.

Should companies be required to help the world?
Nightingale replied to unformed's topic in Speakers Corner
No. The US isn't a communist state. Corporations should be responsible to nobody except their shareholders, provided they're operating legally and following environmental regulations. There's nothing wrong with making money. It'd be nice if they want to give back to the community, and a lot of them do, but it shouldn't be mandatory. -
Yeah... I've just been hesitant to bug him about it. I keep hoping to find it on the internet or in a book somewhere. I'll send an email and see if he/his assistant answers.

Have you ever punched a perfectly good wall?
Nightingale replied to peregrinerose's topic in The Bonfire
Yep. Percussive Maintenance works wonders sometimes. And even if it doesn't work, it makes you feel better. -
Have you ever punched a perfectly good wall?
Nightingale replied to peregrinerose's topic in The Bonfire
Yes. I was about 12 years old, and mad at my parents. The wall was left with a fist sized hole. My hand was fine, though. My parents were very, very pissed. -
OMG. I remember that. I was in second grade, and we were watching the shuttle launch on tv at home. I remember a very moving Paul Conrad editorial cartoon in the LA Times a few days later. I've been trying to find a copy for years without luck.

I'm going to be working on a PhD when I'm done with law school, for the same reason. One class, probably every other semester, just enough to keep the loans deferred and allow me to pay off unsubsidized loans with subsidized ones, and then pay the rest off when I can, all the while remaining in school so I can pay them back at zero interest at my own pace.
