  1. Quote*** I think what I'm suggesting is that wingsuiting is just different enough to warrant special training. What I'm suggesting is that "special training" is available to anyone who seeks it. We DON'T need any more mandates from uspa. I'm not easily offended, but i get very offended when some authority figure tries to protect me from myself. I used to do the occasional demo. I don't anymore because it"s not worth my while to jump through the hoops and pay the tax to uspa. Same deal with level 8 (now called "coach jumps") I guess I've trained my last wingsuit pilot too.
  2. The difference, Jeff, is that we're not talking about students here. What's wrong with an experianced skydiver getting advice from a more experianced one? Thats what we do in every dicipline. The incident referenced in the editorial was not caused by the suit, it was caused by the victim failing to properly secure his harness.
  3. canyonlands ...moab.utah. TSA is a joke. nothing but an excuse for the government to exert more control /restrict our freedom.
  4. The first commercial DZ in the USA was Parachutes Incorporated, Orange ,Massachusetts. Open for business May 2, 1959. As to the the first ever DZ, I guess that would depend on how you define the term "drop zone"
  5. It's your $$ and your life, but, the less you have to rely on someone else to keep you alive, the better off you will be. (again, my opinion) Ask an experienced jumper to watch you pack a couple times. Surely you can find someone willing to help.
  6. Assemble it yourself, then just pay for the reserve pack & aad installation. That's what I did. (3 times) It's not very difficult. Take your time and make sure it's correct. Be sure to tell the rigger what you did, so he can double check. My rigger didn't charge any extra to check my work. (thats part of the inspection anyways) And, IMHO, YOU should be packing the main.
  7. no worries, Lurch. I'm keeping the protec for dangerous stuff.
  8. anyone here use a gath with retractable visor? do you notice any reduced drag vs. a bulkier helmet (ie.protec)? does the visor work well keeping the wind out of your eyes? Any opinions pro/con? thanx
  9. so, no-one wants to fly with you ?
  10. make sure you are looking straight down. use the horizon as your reference, not the aircraft.
  11. Nothing wrong with it, but it does demonstrate why you should wear a helmet.
  12. Not me! I don't compete, don't have any ratings, don't care about the mag., and I already have insurance. And jumping off rocks is more fun anyways!
  13. That's funny Papa. I actually feel tall when you're around!
  14. I'm driving to BD from New England. If the weather is nice, I plan on leaving way early, and making a stop somewhere along the way. In years past I've gone to Delaware Water Gap, Skyline Drive, Lurray Caverns, and Chambersburg. Looking for suggestions on someplace new this time. Maybe a state park, or museum, or a DZ that's open mid-week, or...?
  15. never heard of any such thing, but if there is, get a different brand suit!
  16. r u threatening me? :-p of course I'm in. I MAY even show up before noon.
  17. Go with the s/l. That's how I learned, and I'm glad I did. With 3 aff's, you may get to skip the rope and start out @ 5 sec. delays. It makes much more sense to me to learn to exit & fly your canopy first. I've seen aff & s/l side-by-side, and the s/l folks ALWAYS came out with more knowledge and better canopy skills. (and more $$) I love getting on the load with an aff'er doing thier first hop-n-pop. The look of terror in thier faces cracks me up every time!
  18. a once read in a guide book (fodors?) on yellowstone park about an annual event near the eastern park entrance.
  19. You guys are determined to make me eat my words & spend my hard-earned money at THAT dropzone, aren't you?!! C-YA soon P.S. Justin, I like Sam Adams
  20. I just take the spot farther & farther until I have to land downwind. 8^) The canopy accuracy trick works well too. Ya know, the angle thing. Of course if there are some nice puffy clouds to play with, then the world is my DZ!
  21. They certainly have the right to allow or forbid any activity they like, and they owe no-one any explanations. But, this makes no sense. Grand Canyon West offers 4x4 tours, horseback riding, hiking, camping, river rafting, helicopter rides, and the skywalk. All this is OK, but flying a parachute is "disrespectful"? And to answer a previous ?.. Theyre land borders the river, and they own the only road in the canyon with river access.
  22. I"ll be arriving at TPA ~11:30 am thurs. Leaving 8:00 pm sun. Round trip cab fare is less than half the cheapest rental car I've found so far. Anyone with similar arrival time wanna share?
