Hi Darius. I've slammed you hard for some of your expressed opinions about America. So I was pleasantly surprised to see this comment (above) from you. I'm glad to see that despite some policy disagreements, that you recognize that overall, America is one of the most free and prosperous places in the world to live. I too was disheartened to hear that a moderate candidate did not win in Iran. I hope that your home country can find a way to free themselves from hard-line religious fundamentalism in the near future. At first I took the post to actually be a post disguised to poke fun at the US by craftily highlighting the similarities between the two countries whilst hiding behind an overt lament for the situation in Iran… then I realized the poster probably wasn’t trying to be that clever and was simply genuinely mourning for Iran. The difference in Iran is all the candidates have to be approved by the committee of Islamic fundamentalists. So there was a bunch of candidates witch would have been much more capable and would have received a lot more votes. Unfortunately they did not have the right connections or simply were not fanatic enough to be approved. It is not like here where the people get a choice. They get to choose from the people approved by the Committee. Not to mention there has been more then a few occasions where votes were tampered with. Honestly if I was in Iran it would be a very difficult choice. Both candidates are unloved and hated by the general population. I have no idea why I am posting this. As I have no information to share other then my grief and sadness for Iran. I wonder if Iran will ever be free. In a country filled with intelligent and educated people there is now a president with neither of those qualities. He is also a known murderer. He is a hard-liner. Iran is one of the freest Islamic countries in the Middel East. Men and Woman have more rights there then any other country in that region. I am afrade that will soon change. Maybe the conditions will get so bad that there will be a revolution. It’s crazy to think Iran just had an election where both candidates were horrible. I know some might say the same about our own elections in the US, but there is no comparison. Rafsanjoni is a thief he will say anything and agree with any one to get power so he can fill his pockets. So either choice was a bad one. WOW I don’t know how you can write that with a straight face. So it is bad to make blanket statements but if we arrest every one who is a Muslim and in the same area that’s ok? It is easy to say you can see why it is necessary to arrest anyone and risk even arresting an innocent person because that person is not you. Or it is not someone of your race or religion. I bet your view would change quickly if they started arresting people of your color and your belief. Just like the many who can easily sit there and say if we kill a few thousand innocent Iraqis it will be worth it in the long run.
