Dow drops below 7K but why not spend an add'l $410 Billion?
airdvr replied to Muenkel's topic in Speakers Corner
This from your glorius leader today... "The stock market is story of like a tracking poll in politics. It bobs up and down day-to-day," Obama said. "And if you spend all your time worrying about that, then you're probably going to get the long-term strategy wrong." Hehe...I must have missed the bobbing up part. Please don't dent the planet. Obama's trade rep pick owes almost $10,000 in taxes http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/03/02/obama.kirk.taxes/index.html WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Dallas, Texas, Mayor Ron Kirk, who is President Obama's nominee to be the U.S. trade representative, owes nearly $10,000 in taxes. He's the fourth Obama pick that has come under fire for tax issues. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Yeah but since they don't have those evil unproductive Union employees running the company into the ground...certain posters here will give them a complete pass Seems to me the government is giving them a free pass. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Great! Thanks for paying more than your fair share, which is about to go up. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Sorry, not a 'stimulus' thread. I see the markets in a plunge, unemployment rising and I wonder what's being done and said about it. I missed the president's positive message to the citizens. Where's all the 'hope' we were promised? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Please tell me what our President is doing to stimulate the economy? How is he using his pulpit to reassure us? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Or perhaps the unthinkable...spending less! I don't think it's a Dem/Rep thing. We've been spending like drunken sailors on leave for too long. I think we pay enough taxes already. Consider this: The tax rate here is approaching 50%. When you get your paycheck it's already been taxed 28-33%. In Ohio we have a sales tax that runs from 5 to 7%. In reality, since you're paying sales tax with money that's already been taxed that 5 - 7% is more like 7 - 10%. We have gas taxes...property taxes...excise taxes and more government "fees" than can be listed. ANd some people think we need to pay more. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

not enough only because of gov waste but not equal considering the new cars that don't use gas. Exactly. So government mandates more fuel efficient vehicles but cries when tax revenues go down because of it. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

So I guess all the existing road taxes we pay aren't enough? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

What difference does that make? It may have happened in other nation-states. It might not have. We knew Fannie and Freddie were trouble and Dems looked the other way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMnSp4qEXNM&NR=1 Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Problem is I know that sentence was bullshit. Am I to believe that was the only one? This isn't my first rodeo. I know when a pol speaks most of it is, shall we say wishful thinking. But that wasn't even disguised well. But apparently that's not up for debate. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

I'm proud that we passed the recovery plan free of earmarks, and I want to pass a budget next year that ensures that each dollar we spend reflects only our most important national priorities. That's some funny shit When I heard that I knew I was listening to a politician who was telling me what he thought I wanted to hear. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Haven't been around many union shops have you. Have to agree with the rest of your post. Both share blame in their current situation. But the OP posted a vid showing the Honorable Pro Union Mayor demonstrating a typical conversation with a union. He thought the mayor ripped the anchor. I saw something completely different. True. Perhaps under the financial constraints laid at their door by the UAW they might have been forced to cut design corners to stay competitive? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Just a quick question: Who agreed to those union demands? Chicken and the egg here, with one difference. The egg is holding a gun to the chicken's head. They agreed under threats of massive strikes time and again. Not a good set of options: cave to union demands or lose big money. Ever notice how the UAW has the contracts set up so no two ever expire at the same time? They get to threaten Chrysler all the while knowing Ford is next, and will give them what Chrysler did and then some. On and on ad infinitem. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Fiscal discipline...focus. Good point. The previous administration took a very disciplined approach to raiding the Treasury and having little to show for it. Couldn't agree with you more. There's plenty of blame to go around on both sides of the aisle but what happened with the porkulus is NOT what Mr. Obama pledged in his campaign speeches. Please don't dent the planet. Obama Seeks to Halve Deficit to Half Trillion Per Year by 2013 http://www.foxnews.com/politics/first100days/2009/02/22/obama-seeks-halve-deficit-half-trillion-year-end-term/ "We can't generate sustained growth without getting our deficits under control," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address that seemed to preview his intentions. He said his budget will be "sober in its assessments, honest in its accounting, and lays out in detail my strategy for investing in what we need, cutting what we don't, and restoring fiscal discipline." Fiscal discipline...now that's some funny shit Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Here's the culprit http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122091796187012529.html Fannie Mae's Patron Saint In 2000, then-Rep. Richard Baker proposed a bill to reform Fannie and Freddie's oversight. Mr. Frank dismissed the idea, saying concerns about the two were "overblown" and that there was "no federal liability there whatsoever." Two years later, Mr. Frank was at it again. "I do not regard Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as problems," he said in response to another reform push. And then: "I regard them as great assets." Great or not, we'll give Mr. Frank this: Their assets are now Uncle Sam's assets, even if those come along with $5.4 trillion in debt and other liabilities. Again in June 2003, the favorite of the Beltway press corps assured the public that "there is no federal guarantee" of Fan and Fred obligations. A month later, Freddie Mac's multibillion-dollar accounting scandal broke into the open. But Mr. Frank was sanguine. "I do not think we are facing any kind of a crisis," he said at the time. Three months later he repeated the claim that Fannie and Freddie posed no "threat to the Treasury." Even suggesting that heresy, he added, could become "a self-fulfilling prophecy."
