How do you stop massacres by mentally unstable people?
RonD1120 replied to Skyrad's topic in Speakers Corner
Absolutely. Happens millions upon millions of times every year without incident. It's how I grew up and I will tell you without a shadow of a doubt that at no time in my midnight movie attendance starting in high-school in the mid-'70s did I ever have to be concerned about a loonie walking into any of the theaters and spraying the audience with a hundred rounds out of a gun. Never. Not a single time. "The times they are a changin'. He that is not busy being born is busy dyin'." Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. Because, you know, when the kid is at the movies being shot at by a madman with military grade equipment and Dad is at home, that's really helpful. The concept of a "sheepdog" family protector in this scenario is ridiculous. Not when you take the second sentence into consideration. Please try to see the whole picture instead of practicing selective attention. Explain why an adequately trained 18YO is not eligible to be the sheepdog? Is it really wise to allow children to attend a midnight movie without a parent or sheepdog? If family survival training is observed and implemented the vulnerable members should be in a protective environment. It is unreasonable to assume the police can protect every venue, especially between sunset and sunrise. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. I agree with winsor, "I really don't know. I suspect there is no "solution" per se." The only reasonable position is to protect yourself, your family, your community and your country. You must be armed, trained and prepared. For the safety of your loved ones and yourself, you must be ready and able to stand your ground. There must be at least one person in every family willing to assume the responsibility of the sheepdog. Someone in each family must be adept with survival techniques. The only thing progressives know to do is make laws. The only thing anarchists and terrorists know to do is subvert them. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. I called their customer service number and requested to opt out of their promotions. It seemed to create a moderate effect as I receive much less junk mail. It is not truth, it is just liberal spin. Let's not forget that Moyers was there at the beginning of President Johnson's Great Society ideology. One of the first experiments was Project 100,000. That was the drafting of 100,000 young men who could not attend college. Vietnam provided a guaranteed attrition to the Great Society funding. Liberal Democrats, consistently failing since 1964. Red herrings. Have nothing to do with anything he said in his editorial. Have nothing to do with the subject of this thread. But thanks for your insight! Sorry, I tend to type what comes into my head. Bill Moyers has no idea what the NRA stands for or what it does. He is nothing more than a life long liberal hack. Abeit, respected by many but not me. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a member of the NRA. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. I disagree, you are basing your statement on anecdotal evidence which in no way relates to facts. http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/The-Simple-Dollar/2011/1219/How-much-will-charity-help-your-tax-bill Additional info from a 2009 study. "The 10 states with the highest percentage of Christian residents had an average median income of $42,297.07." http://irregulartimes.com/index.php/archives/2009/03/30/most-christian-states-are-least-wealthy/ Not much point filling long form with itemized deductions at that income level. These are my people. They are the working poor not the lazy poor. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. I relate from personal experience and from what I know about folks like me. I do not know very many rich Christians. Also, I am not a Christian Scientist. You left out the last part of that statement which is "as long as they get a tax deduction for that donation". Tax deduction is of little value. Most folks, me included, don't even use it. To utilize the tax benefit the donor must file long form and itemize deductions. Only a portion of the total contributions may deducted. The Christians I know generally just file short form and take the standard deduction. I know it is hard to believe, most folks contribute from the heart and not from General Accounting Principles. At the very least we can define one that exists everywhere and forever in order to justify spending unlimited amount of money on the military forever. Oh? And churches and charitable organizations don't have to fight each other for funding? My experience in organized religion has taught me that the only real enemy is other religions. They are the one's that take our funding (and our souls). That is what organized religions do. They fight each other for funding and for souls. Funding and souls are everything. Poor people are just the pawns used to obtain funding and souls. We all have to make choices. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. Oh! I thought this was your original position: I was puzzled by your assertion that lazy poor people should not be rewarded. You haven't explained what you think should be done with them except that you think Christian ministries should reward them with charity and that they will no longer be lazy because their values will somehow be adjusted by the ministries and they will then no longer be poor because they will begin to work hard or something. Why do you think the government is competent to run the military, but not capable of being competent to help lazy poor people and adjust their values? What about all of the HARD WORKING poor people out there. Do you really think that if the government helps them out, they will become lazy too? If so, then why aren't you afraid that the government will make military personnel and contractors lazy also? Right, I thought you were just going on the defense budget. I stated my dissatisfaction in the Great Society. It has been 48 years and the situation has not improved with government funding. It is as useless as the War On Drugs. The government is adept at increasing its power at the expense of the people. We are going down the tubes. Democrat/Republican, two heads same snake. With the military fully funded we can at least identify an enemy. My experience in social services has taught me that the only real enemy is the other programs. They are the ones that will take your funding. That is what social service programs due. They fight each other for funding. Funding is everything. Clients are just the pawns used to obtain it. I am saying I've witnessed this BS since 1964 and President Johnson's Great Society. It has not worked. Poor lazy people are simply useful idiots for the Liberal Democrats. Poor lazy people need to be taught to value personal responsibility and personal achievement. How do you teach them that, without converting them to Christianity, of course. What about poor, lazy Republicans. I guess we haven't even talked about them yet. That reminds me ... do you think there are very many RICH, LAZY people out there who sit back and make tons of money not producing anything of value? If so, do you think that LAZY people are OK and don't cost us anything as long as they are rich? I prefer government funding primarily for defense. That was my original position. That's a rather un-Christian attitude, but you're certainly free to embrace it. I don't believe that if we give up our guns the Mid-East terrorists will refrain from using Syria's chemical weapons. Right now, those weapons are up for grabs. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.

If you are so confident the big guy is coming back, why would you give a flying rat's ass about what happens in this world? Would you rather not error on the side of being Christ-like by giving away every dime, spend time with the sick and imprisoned and turning the other cheek? Every generation since Jesus has thought that the end of times were at hand, your prayers are hardly unique. Giving to the poor is Scriptural. Government funding of the poor for political power is not. My prayers are not meant to be unique by the world's standard. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. You are expanding the parameters of the immediate question. You have drifted into the classic guns or butter argument. I vote guns. It is that simple for me. Sorry. Didn't mean to go off-track. So. Back to the immediate question. What do you think we should do with the lazy poor? Saying that the Christian ministries will take care of them simply begs the question. They will still be poor and lazy, won't they? We will still have to provide them with food and shelter won't we? Assuming that the Christian ministries would even be capable of taking care of all the lazy poor people, where will they get the resources needed to take care of them? Have you done the math? I think the faith based ministries have a better opportunity to give a hand up rather than a hand out. I also think the total numbers requiring a hand up would decrease with values clarification. That is, it can be taught that it is more beneficial to take personal responsibility than to just vote Liberal Democrat. As far as the cost, as I said before, Christians love to donate if they believe in the cause. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. What, exactly, DO you think we should do with the "Lazy Poor"? Let the various ministries care for them, like in the old days. But, as President Nixon so accurately stated, once a government program has been funded it will never go away. And, that is where we are stuck in our demise. Where would "the ministries" get the resources to "take care of them"? How would "the ministries" take care of them without "rewarding" them? Take a look at the Salvation Army, Metropolitan Ministries of Tampa FL to name a couple. Christians love to donate to their favorite ministries. I worked for both of those organizations. What we found, in the Tampa Bay Area, is that the welfare scammers draw their government checks and lie to the social service ministries to the extent that a social service background check network is required. That way there is some chance of weeding out the system abusers. System manipulation and abuse is a way of life. IMO, government funding is the root cause of the abuse. 1. Hard work and success should be allowed its reward, not penalized. 2. Defense should get the major funding because evil exists in the world. The churches should care for the poor not the government. 3. The lazy poor should not be rewarded. A major portion of our society associates income with the mailbox not work. It is our own fault. Back in the 60's and 70's many of us believed all that liberal BS. Now we are paying the price. Some of us saw the fallacy and got out but not enough soon enough. Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus. Reading through the various replies, it seems that some believe that it is not OK for an adult to question or scrutinize an adolescent and/or his behavior. In my family you are under adult authority until the age of 18 and leave home. If you choose to stay home you remain under adult authority. TM was an adolescent who attacked an adult.
