I spent most of my time in 2009 and 10 trying to explain the difference between religion and spiritual relationship here in the SC. I gave up. There are only a few of us that get it. The rest just want to provide cute, witty, meaningless comebacks. That realization brought me to the conclusion that SC is a cyberspace encounter group without the understanding of the rules for an actual encounter group. this is also called assault. Not sure any fan of the 1st should advocate it. It is not assault as described, unless just closing in, is followed with actual physical contact. Matt Too be clear, the PGR is non-confrontational. We would not likely "close in," unless someone's physical well being is threatened. The WBC, to my knowledge, has never actually threatened anyone. We, the PGR, are there to form a buffer for the family. Here in Florida, I have participated in 126 missions and have never seen the WBC. I have only been told they have been here. In all fairness: On the one hand, the Declaration of Independence (DI) does not carry the force of law in and of itself as, for example, the US or state constitutions do. On the other hand, though the DI is not examined "jointly" with the Constitution by US state and federal courts, it is, sometimes expressly, given a certain amount of due deference - not just by scholars, but also by the courts - as a respected guiding treatise reflecting the US's national creed and principles, many of which later went on to be embodied in the Constitution and various statutes. I not infrequently lurk DZ.com while working. When I read your post, I was doing some legal research on Westlaw in another tab on my browser. So, I did a quick search to see how many separate reported cases in the federal courts (all levels) used the phrase "declaration of independence" in their text. I got over 1,100 hits, meaning over 1,100 separate cases expressly mentioned the DI for one reason or another. So yes, the DI is important - as a respected treatise sort of similar to, say, a respected law professor's body of scholarly work - but not with the force of actual law, and with less force than the Constitution. You missed something. The Declaration of Independence declared the colonies' independence from England. It did not establish a government. The Articles of Confederation established the USA as a country and established a national government. The Constitution replaced the Articles, establishing a new national government. Aren't these two documents to be examined jointly? I never said one replaced the other or that they were two chapters of the same book. My point is that when I was in school they were studied together, along with the Mayflower Compact. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. I always looked at this part: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--" When I was in school, the term Creator had one meaning. For me it still does. I can definitely see why you'd interpret it that way. And for you, and your faith, that makes total sense. I think it's not unreasonable to argue that people of other faiths would draw the same conclusion about who the "creator" was based on their own belief structure. Most religions have a 'creator/god' and reference them as such. I don't think it's a Christian monopoly. edit: fwiw, this is the most enjoyable conversation I'd had with you Ron, even though we both feel differently about the topic. -

Well, no.... I think I'd prefer to have fewer sociopaths around. And I agree, an individual's perception of mental health (and happiness) is quite subjective, so these polls don't really mean a whole lot. Personally, I don't rate my happiness or any other emotions on a scale relative to other people. In grad school that was called "concept of self." It has always seemed to me that liberals want everyone to be equally miserable. It is like a washtub full of crabs. If one tries to crawl out the others will pull him back. Without some form of spiritual enlightenment it is very difficult to rise above the problems of life. Liberals seem to cry unfairness if they see someone happy. Without a concept of God the pie is seen as finite. If someone has a big slice it means someone else's slice is smaller. On the other hand, with God the pie is infinite. Everyone can have as big a slice as they choose to cut. It is also the main concept of Milton Freedman's economic theory of the free market. Happiness is a choice. So is fighting for your limitations. Philippians 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. In other words, the "Holy Bible" has been written and rewritten to include/exclude those parts that don't fit with current social beliefs. Aren't the so called "christians" a big part of the US Constiitutional movement of "original intent", when it comes to the US Constitution? How about an "originial intent" movement from "true believers" in the bible? You can't just go around re-interpreting the original intent of the authors of the bible, can you? BBBBZZZZTTTTTT!!!! Wrong answer. "christians" are free to pick and choose which parts of what versions of the bible apply to their particular vision/beliefs. I get it now. Anyone can pick and choose any part that supports their particular version of reality. It must be real nice to have a religious foundation built from nothing of any real substance. You have an illusion of what you think Christians are and how they are supposed to believe and behave. You are constantly frustrated and angered because we do not conform to your illusion.
