Sleep. Is it really all its cracked up to be?
skydiver30960 replied to yardhippie's topic in The Bonfire
Who is Mohoso Rodriguez??? Hey, just do the best you can. Your boss probably already knows about your current job, and he also knows about the long hours he's putting on you. Most important thing: if things get to be too much, don't be afraid to say "sorry dude, it's just more than I can handle"... don't let yourself get so worn down that you risk yourself or others. In the meantime, soak up the $$$ and fatten up the savings account! Elvisio "take the money and run" Rodriguez -
The Bytch speaks the truth. GET THERE. Last year a buddy flew in and out for only sixteen hours at the convention. Flew in late morning, jumped all day, partied all night, flew out early the next morning, slept on the plane, was back at work on second shift that evening. Hope it isn't quite that extreme for you but GET THERE. Elvisio "ready for Rantoul" Rodriguez

I've been unemployed since January, and in April the gf and I quit the long-distance thing when I moved in with her. We're not able to get by just on her income, but it's not a bad gig for until my savings run out. What she sees: a picked-up house, the laundry is done, the dinner is on the table (or on the way there), lawn's mowed, garbage is out, her lunch is packed, groceries are bought, and the cats are fed. What I see: no rent, no bills, sleeping in late, daytime TV, time to play hockey and stuff, and HOURS and HOURS of PW time on dropzone.com Elvisio "best of both worlds" Rodriguez

Sorry guys, I guess I should have been more specific. I would always let them fly the canopy... my question related only to the approach and landing itself. That being said, it sounds like most folks are in agreement. Thanks, y'all have given me something to mull over! Elvisio "sick of my grass-stained ass" Rodriguez

Hi guys and gals. Here's one from me to all the tandem I's out in dropzone.com-land. It's long (sorry), but read on and help me out cuz it's a question that's really important to me: I've recently moved to a new DZ, where I find I have the choice of a couple different tandem canopies. Throughout my previous tandem career, I've always tried to do everything I could to involve the student in the skydive: i.e. the student is "making a skydive" not just "taking a parachute ride". Two examples of this are that I always give students the chance to pull the ripcord, and I (until now) always let the students land (flare) the canopy with me. I feel that the more involved they are, the more fulfilling the experience will be, and they'll be more heads-up on their next jump. At my new DZ we have two canopies (not naming them since I don't want this degenerating into good-canopy bad-canopy discussion). One is a sort of "both instructor and student give full flare and you take what you get" kind of canopy, the other is a newer design that flares like a true elliptical, that is you feel out the flare through the landing, with a great success rate at standups even in low wind. Problem is, "feeling out the flare" is really hard to teach to first jumpers so when I'm on this newer canopy I feel that, while I'm going to have a better chance at a standup due to the great flare, I prefer not to have the student assist in order to avoid a "pop-up and plop-down" from too much flare. So the question is: Which do you feel would be more valuable in the eyes of your students: being involved in the landing flare even though it means probably sliding in on your butt, or not being involved in the landing flare but ending up with a pretty, comfortable standup? Thanks to all; Elvisio "still learning every day" Rodriguez

WARNING: overly optimistic, rose-colored opinion to follow: This whole thing smacks of the Berlin Wall: a relatively small construction that became the centerpiece for fifty years of Cold War. Barriers are not the answer (here's the overly optimistic part). If Jews and Palestinians want their own "space" that's fine, and they don't need to be best of friends either politically or socially, but they need to be able to act with enough civility to be able to mingle in the streets without kicking the shit out of each other. Putting up any kind of barrier will only increase the gap between the two cultures (through lack of interaction) and lead to future problems... I flew Southwest A LOT a couple years ago (broke bastard that I am) and usually found the extra banter nice. But every once in a while, usually when I was cranky from Southwest's absolutely IDIOTIC "wait in this line, then wait in this line, then wait in this line, then STILL get the middle seat" method of boarding, the jokes and chitchat got to be too much. Just get the damn plane off the ground, and get me where I'm goin'. ...Oh yea, and tell the captain to give me a pass at 15,000 and a green light straight up! Elvisio "call me d.b." Rodriguez

Everybody plays cards, everybody wants to win lotsa cash. Not everybody wants to jump out of airplanes. There is very little in the "average" human experience that allows the fat, lazy, couch sitting masses to identify with skydiving. Elvisio "sad but true" Rodriguez

I had a lot of fun on the Spanish Med in a town called Alicante. It's not a resort town, just a regular Spanish city that happens to be on the Med. It had a nice "real world Spain" feel to it but was still nice with the beach and Esplenade and all. Of course, I was sixteen at the time and was totally pumped that I was only in school three hours a day, could drink legally, and was THOUSANDS of miles away from my parents. BUT, I still think I'd have a good time if I went there today. Elvisio "don't drink Aguila" Rodriguez

I was thinking about going to see it this evening... Remember, it's the weekend. No time for posting when there's skydiving to be done! On the other hand, during the week when everyone's at work... Elvisio "weekend forum lurker" Rodriguez

Revelation: Americans support higher taxes for better traffic.

How about a combination of all the above: 1.) Funnel MUCH more money into mass transit instead of roads. Make it so damn clean, convenient, and easy that it's crazy to do anything else for in-town commuting. "no, the beltway won't be getting any extra lanes, but check out our 25 new subway stops around town!" 2.) I love the idea of increasing speed limits, but if we're going to have a Stateside Autobahn then we need to train our drivers as such... SIGNIFICANTLY improve driver training including mandatory Driver's Ed (REAL D.E. no crappy one-day courses), paying a hefty sum of money to get your license, and a yearly renewal fee and recertification test to keep your license. 3.) Here's the tough one folks: when you're in the driver's seat, all you do is DRIVE. NO CELL PHONES, NO FOOD, NO DRINKS, NO DVD PLAYERS. Fine the SHIT out of anyone who is allowing their attention to be distracted with driving. It'd be tough for me too, nothing makes a drive go quicker than some fries and a coke... I've not experienced it firsthand, but I've heard the driver training and certification process in Germany is pretty impressive. Any Germans online that can give us the details? Dude, he had a GREAT day: 1.) He got to fly in a F-16; 2.) He got to log a skydive from a F-16. Lucky bastard... Elvisio "expensive jump for the taxpayers though" Rodriguez

I HAD a 1972 Chevy RV that LOOKED like the oldest vehicle on the face of the earth. Funny thing was, it ran like a top. Everything related to the living area in the RV SUCKED, the body was rust being held together by paint, but under the hood she was bad-ass. Elvisio "fixer-upper" Rodriguez

...thanks, needed that. My long-time gf has been surrounded all her life by successful marriages, I've seen my fair share of them fail. Not bitter, just stating fact. Thus, she's all ready for the ring, and I'm hesitant. Lots of the folks having "cutaways" have been skydiving buddies... so it's good to see a jumper keeping it up!
