Perhaps it is you who have failed to grasp the big picture. Even after Saddam gassed the Kurds, the US gov't still supported him. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

  4. The fact that some muslim children hate the US has very little to do with religion. Christianity was basically invented in their backyards. They hate the US because of its actions. The west supports governments that oppress them, and they can probably recognize where the Israeli Apache helicopters that blow the shit out of their neighbourhoods on a regular basis came from. If you were in that situation you'd probably not feel too compassionate to Americans either. I've heard lots of canadian kids talk about hating muslims, so don't give me that crap either. Lots of parents teach their children racism. It's not a religious issue, and for that matter very few of us seem to pay any attention to what their religions actually say anyway. Jesus defined hypocrisy as judging others by a different standard than yourself, and there's a lot of that going on these days. Anyone who needs clarification on that point should msg me. ***Quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If american (USA) politics ONLY impacted on USA, I'd say fine do what you want. But unfortunately it does not. It has global implications and ramification. SO those in the world you are effected by decisions made by YOUR illustrious leader do in fact have a right to respond. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do You have any examples of how your opinion is so? Quote Well, how about when Bush demanded that Pakistan cut off food aid to Afghanistan on September 16,2001? The red cross estimated that 7.5 million afghanis were in danger of starvation at that time. Who knows how many died that winter while the US engaged in a food airlift that even humanitarian agencies labelled ineffective and despicable? That's the least he owes those guys for putting them into this situation in the first place. But I agree, the advisor who came up with that one should get a slap on the back. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  8. Well I hope if they're going to make movies out of the rest of the books they stop combining the plots/jokes. I've read most of the series (twice), rationing it now to 1 book per year. I thought the movie was great, obviously fans of the series would have preferred a little more attention be payed to the books, but it kicked some serious ass. Well he's surrounded by japanese actors I assume, and while I mean to promote racial stereotypes ... of course he's gonna look tall. I saw an oprah preview on tv yesterday, and he looks just a tad shorter than her. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  10. ***And if we didn't support them, hypothetically, would we not be then branded as anti-semites? Quote First of all, the term anti-semitism refers to a language spoken by people of the middle east, so when we say someone is an anti-semite it doesn't only mean they're against jews, other arabs are included too. Secondly, if we do not agree with Israel's policies we are not anti-semites simply on those grounds. Israel shouldn't be allowed to kill/oppress people just because the jews were on the receiving end of that for the last few thousand years. How about some elementary morality? 12. Maybe if any of the members of the US administration who planned the attack on Iraq and the subsequent occupation had learned to speak a little Arabic or made any attempt to understand the region the US wouldn't be facing the problems it has there today. Also, as someone who speaks a second language I have found that it has increased my knowledge of english substantially, especially in terms of etymology. Not to mention the other benefits mentioned by ppl on this thread. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
  13. You are kidding yourself if you think you have complete freedom to criticize the US government. Sure they may not haul you into the rose garden and execute you, but try to publish in a major journal and see how far you get. Noam Chomsky, a professor of linguistics at MIT and one of the sharpest political analysts I've come across, is a great example of this. The guy has some excellent points, firmly based on rationality and objectivity, but he is widely ignored. There is no need for government censorship when the media censures itself and ignores its journalistic obligations. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

    CNN and Iraq

That post was right on the money as far as I'm concerned Bill. On a similar topic, Jon Steward did an episode of the Daily Show which featured clips of statements Bush made while governor of Texas and then contrasted them to what he's said as President. It can be downloaded here: http://www.onlisareinsradar.com/archives/001279.php Definitely one of most poignant images of the President I've ever seen Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

The control lines on this one passed close to the passenger seat. Then again, the pilot told me it could get up 10k max, so if it was designed properly you'd think it would be fun to hop and pop from. CNN and Iraq

***OK, if a guy that is known to kill and torture people on a scale like, say, maybe only 200 people or so, was walking around your nieborhood with a big gun and a Malitov Cocktail would you just want him left alone to do those things? Now increase the scale to country size, and add in the fact that he could have still, if left in power, affected you and your nieborhood directly, that should answer your question. Quote That arguement is irrelevant. The US has a long history of supporting governments which fit kill and torture people on a regular basis. I don't think we ever had much to fear from Saddam, certainly not enough to justify taking over the country. Even if it turns out that the invasion helps the citizens of Iraq, I don't think the administration has the right to make that decision. CNN and Iraq

Does anyone else find it strange that the anchors on CNN (along with President Bush) refer to the people who shot down the chinook in Iraq as terrorists? Now correct me if I'm way out of line here, but when someone attacks a legitimate military target in a time of war, (and I quote the President "we are at war"), are they engaging in terrorism? I'm not in any way sympathetic to the resistance in Iraq, but branding all these people as "The Terrorists" is a predictable move by the administration to use the residual public anger over 9-11 to gather more support for a war that has gotten way out of hand. What do you guys think? Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

  25. Well spoken Bill, I'm way too hung over right now to come up with any kind of intelligent reply to AJ. One thing I'd like to say is that the contras, ignoring anything to do with communism or political affiliation, employed tactics which specifically targetted the civilian population. Terrorism isn't an entity, it's a tactic. Just because you're deemed to be fighting for the right reasons (ie on our side) it doesn't mean you can't be a terrorist. Also, the fact that you are unaware of the crimes the US is responsible for proves my point about historical amnesia quite well. An excellent reading on this topic would be Noam Chomsky's book 9-11, which honestly completely changed my point of view on the world the day I read it. I was actually quite supportive of the US, and would have agreed with most of the stuff you said in your post. That however, was due to my lack of knowledge of the historical context of many events of the last 50 years. Now granted, a lot of the stuff you read in the radical news media is complete horseshit, but Chomsky's arguements are well backed up with actual evidence, not just misquotes of the constitution. The US has supported the most brutal regimes around the world for quite some time, and as a result of its actions (direct and indirect) hundreds of thousands of civillians have died, (maybe millions, but who knows for sure). All I can say is read some of Chomsky's stuff with an open mind and then tell me that the hands of the US gov't are clean. And then you assume that because I come out and say this that my loyalties are misplaced? Sometimes loyalty to your country means that you don't agree with something it's done, and you say so. I'm not an American, but I'm a great admirer of the principals it was founded on, (if you exclude slavery and indian extermination), and I hate the fact that the current leadership is so far from the level of integrity that was intended by the founding fathers. So no, my loyalties aren't misplaced, they're exactly where I want them to be. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
