Ya, those mexicans are definitely moving to the states because of its sound moral leadership and values. Forget about the jobs. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

The resolutions weren't complied with? Hmmm, remember when the UN World Court told the US to get the hell out of Nicaragua in 1986 and it didn't? Guess there should have been a unilateral intervention in that case too then. The whole point of going outside the UN was that Iraq supposedly was bristling with WMD's and a pre emptive strike was ok because Iraq posed a direct threat to US national security. Now it's up to congress. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

Zinn is good too. Chomsky does a good job of explaining the animosity though, I always just thought people were jealous of western prosperity and freedom. Turns out we've been killin an awful lot of innocent people. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

Ya, damn government reversed it with like a tenth of the publicity. Why didn't they think of the implications before passing the law in the first place? bahahaha. Safe shooting... You always see condoms on the guns in Tour of Duty on History channel. Smart to use them for sand though. Big advantage against a country that doesn't believe in contraceptives eh? Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

Ya, CNN started the war, it makes perfect sense now, worked so well for them the first time around they decided to give'er another go. That was the most morbid and morally disgusting manipulations of people's grief I have ever seen. I stopped it where it showed the lady falling. It is a blatant call to arms based on the exploitation of this fear, and represents exactly what I hate about those who are exploiting 9-11 to justify war in the middle east. There were some 3000 civilians killed in the bombing of afghanistan, according to this source. http://www.cursor.org/stories/casualty_count.htm More died as a result of Bush demanding that food and medical aid be cut off on September 16, 2001, while 7.5 million were on the brink of starvation. Is this truly a fitting memorial to the victims of 9-11? Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

If flash suppressors were legal, it would make them more available. Consequently they would probably facilitate crime alone, because there is no conceivable legal use for one. And don't tell me they wouldn't help criminals, that's retarded. If you are going to want to get away with a shooting, it only makes sense to use a silencer. And why does anyone need a handgun with more than ten rounds? If you can't hit a guy with 10, 12 will probably not make much difference. Until now I didn't notice I was debating gun laws with a texan. My participation in this thread has come to an end. If you want a little more understanding of how people can hate the US, 9-11 is the perfect book. I know I'm always on about Chomsky, but frankly everyone should be. He describes how the consequences of some US foreign policy created widespread animosity to the US, even before 9-11. It's a very good analysis. Too good actually, I'm having trouble finding people who are able to debate him without resorting to name calling. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

It shouldn't even be an arguement that he HAD WMDs at one point, after all the US sold them to him. The question is when did he become a threat to the USA? It wasn't after he used them on the Kurds, the white house was still behind him then. He only became a tyrant and bad guy when he disobeyed the US administration and invaded Kuwait, then the white house had a change of heart. The key question about the war is whether or not President Bush lied when he said he had evidence that the Iraqis were hiding WMDs from the UN weapons inspectors, and they threateded the US enough that the inspections were just taking too much time. That was the justification for invasion. If it were true, why haven't they been located? Why the lie about nuclear weapons which was so quickly proven to be ridiculous? There seems to have been insufficient and/or misrepresented justification for pre-emptive attack. Don't kid yourself, no administration past or present gives a shit about Iraqi freedom exept in terms of how it plays to the media and population. Bill, I'm with you 100% on that one. If President Bush had just come out and said Saddam is a tyrant, we want to liberate the Iraqi people and as a payment take control of some of their oil, I would probably have at least some measure of respect for him. Instead there's this huge focus shift away from the original WMD thing, first to Al Quaida (which is so full of shit it's almost funny, bin laden hated Hussein with a passion), then to liberation of Iraqis.. manipulated is exactly the right way to put it. And it's nice to see people acknowledge they're insurgents instead of terrorists. The oldest trick in the book is to start labelling resistence to military occupation terrorism, the nazis were particularly fond of it. I'm not saying they're right, just that we have to be careful how we throw terms like terrorism around. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

And you seem very willing to attribute it in full to the concealed weapons permits, but leaving that aside I actually agree in this point. The concealed weapons permits are relatively hard to come by, requiring more background checks and I presume more training. Since a criminal is unlikely to be helped by such a permit, and a crime of passion is only moderately more likely due to the fact that the person in question is carrying a lethal weapon, I think it could have a positive effect. Since the criminals are 'strapped', it only makes sense that the playing field be levelled for all those Chuck Norris fans who have fantasies about stopping a bank robbery or something of that nature. And of course the statistics that you use must be in no way biased or flawed like the ones I pointed out. Damn that liberal CDC overstepping their mandate to study mortality rates of all kinds. Leaving that aside though, I'd much rather not have my weapon concealed. What good will that do? Why not wear them on your hips so the bad guys know not to fuck with you. I think that would be pretty fun actually. Imagine, the Hugo Boss holster, color coordinated with your favorite business suit. Oh wait, this is sounding an awful lot like the wild west isn't it. National crime rates have been declining yes, but there are more factors involved than just the proliferation of concealed weapons. And for that matter, why not just buy a taser gun for 400 bucks? http://www.taser.com/pages/products/citizendefense.html Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

So given the fact that Americans are a murderous bunch as you so eloquently put it, would it not be in your own best interest to limit the number of firearms with which to indulge in this particular hobby? We seem to have come to a concensus on at least one point, if nothing else. I'm no expert on gun control, and what i've learned this last week about it has been mostly based on my search for mortality rates, but given the facts about how many people are dying from guns in the US, not just relative to other countries but the sheer numbers, is it not reasonable to suggest that perhaps stricter gun control in theory would be a good idea? As I said I'm not an expert, but I don't think it takes one to see that the correlation between being "a murderous bunch" and being armed to the teeth with more guns per capita than you can shake a stick at, will lead to some pretty negative repercussions. As you say, the child murder rate is ridiculously high in the US, but unintentional injuries are also relatively high. Neither of these things is a case against gun control. I don't know how to implement gun control in the USA, if I said I did I'd be a liar. I do think that there are too many handguns there, and that there should be more laws governing the safe storage of firearms and their responsible use, ie training and licensing. Unfortunately a whole different approach is needed to deal with illegal weapons, and I have no answers there. I think my position is that gun control laws aren't working in many cases, but this doesn't mean that it's a bad idea in theory, or that it cannot be put into practice. Here is a link and except from the CDC report of firearms deaths in 26 industrialized countries: The full report is here: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00046149.htm Now, this is my position. Many gun control laws do not work. This is evidenced in my own country, and I will readily admit it. I do however believe that the principal of stricter gun control is sound. You were quite successful in blowing up the Kellerman study, whose background I didn't know when I quoted it, which was my mistake. If you are able to do the same to the FBI's uniform crime report and the CDC study I would be willing to listen. In response to your comments on suicide, I found them unconvincing when you use Japan as an example. Ever hear the saying hard cases make bad law? Well Japan is a hard case because of their cultural predisposition to offing themselves. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

Don't you guys have libraries in the states? I think everyone should find their way to one and read 9-11 and Hegemony or Survival by Noam Chomsky. Even if you hate him you should still hear what he has to say. Took me off the war supporters list in about 3 hours of reading. How can it possibly harm anyone to read a hundred page book they borrow for free at the library? Especially you gravitymaster! If you would read either and still tell me about how the lefties are full of unreasonable hatred for President Bush, I would be shocked. A lot of lefties spew gibberish because they read newsletters with vague accusations and namecalling, but Chomsky is an MIT prof, a genius in the field of linguistics and he has some rock solid arguements. I read it keenly because I thought I could pick them apart and blow my prof out of the water cuz his gibberish pissed me off, but frankly the books are too good to dismis. Read it if for no other reason than to come back here and throw it in our lefty Bush hating anti-american communist sympathizing faces , because as far as the left goes, Chomsky is the best of the best. I was schooled at home till grade 5, part of which was 1 on 1 tutoring from a retired prof, which I recommend highly, but when I entered public school I had a really good time from grade 7-12, (too nerdy for elementary school i guess), and I think there is a lot to gain from public school. Then again, if your child can't learn there you have to explore other options. I'm glad I wasn't home schooled any longer though, a lot of my best friends are those I met in junior high and have known since. Also it is harder to be involved in extra-curriculars in home school. Is anyone familiar with the Waldorf school system? Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream

It's interesting that nobody said a word about whether or not this politician had in fact been guilty of ignoring the desires of her mexican constituents. Obviously this is slander and highly innappropriate, but it is a very atomistic approach used to reply to the criticism. It's very ignorant to call the dems the party of racial discrimination though, it's pretty obvious both parties are guilty of this. Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
