You know, more than a few movies have used real actors as vampires and have met with a fair amount of success. All frustrations with the deviations from the original Matheson story aside, I couldn't force myself to care about Neville's interaction with a bunch of pixels. My girlfriend and I saw it this past weekend. She went into it with decapitated expectations, and I went in with reasonably full knowledge of Matheson's original story. What was done to this story is unfortunately becoming the standard for big studio films these days: they took an incredibly fascinating story about human nature and what happens to coping mechanisms when there is absolutely nobody to bounce ideas off of and dumbed it all down for mass consumption. In the book, Robert Neville is not "a brilliant scientist", he's not an officer in the Army and he's not making efforts to contact potential survivors. He's an average joe who's left alone and forced to endure rather severe hardships. But rather than strive from early on to figure out what makes him different and use that to effect change, he takes a more violent and easy route to keep himself going. That's what makes his eventual end so poignant and telling: he's lost his objectivity and replaced it with grim routine. The movie took that concept and wrung the life out of it. I was underwhelmed. That was the Skydive Radio / Pokerstars big way at last years Halloween boogie. Who would have ever thought a bunch of poker players who had never all jumped together could throw together a 15 way and it come together like it did on the first attempt, at sunset, just before the party started. That night was one of the best parties that I can remember. Lee kept Jen and I in stitches all night! Makes me smile too. I'm there in red and black to Lee's left. My Cora's there too. For all of the regrets I could have, I'd rather focus on the fact that I got to hang out with Lee and get to know him better on two occasions. Even though he was incredibly busy both times, he always made me feel welcome as a friend and potential partner in mischief. Laughing with Lee meant laughing for a good long while, and it was rare that I ever saw him without a smile. As others have said, you knew what Lee was about because he didn't hide things.
