X-braced VS Airlocks....differences
cobaltdan replied to JJohnson's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
hi j, i dissagree with your explanation. as a canopy designer i can fix my effective span at what ever i want. the purpose of x braces is simply to pull down the top skin for the purpose of reducing spanwise airfoil distortion. which is not the onlyway to skin the cat, just one technique of several. improving your airfoil increases efficiency and is what makes a canopy effectively fly 'bigger'. it is not because you can get a bigger span using cross braces (which btw you do not get). sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military) -
coaching is a good recommendation. also, many newbies look down at too steep an angle. it is easier to judge distance to ground and your glide if you look foward, not down. hope that helps, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

equipment/training suggestion for a 300lb wannabe?
cobaltdan replied to jumbo's topic in Safety and Training
give skydivesuffolk.com a call and see if they will accomodate. larry pennington is the dzo there and is a super guy. they have 4 of our tandem canopies there and at least canopy wise will have no problem with your weight. sincerely, dan atair aerodynamics www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military) -
hi conway, please field questions like this directly with our office instead of this technical discussion forum. sincerely, dan atair aerodynamics 718-923-1709 ph 718-923-1733 fx www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

deployment speed ranged from 90-110 on the jumps. 500# test jumps at 200 are being done as we speak (not the 120, but our tandem 350) will post when completed. sincerely, dan ps have a great 4th everyone ! Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

icarus fx vs vx, xaos 21 vs 27 same aspect ratio. only difference is 7 cell vs 9 cell with respect to line set. the 9 cell version will have a slightly lower spanwise distortion as with the same aspect ratio there is a shorter span between ribs on the 9 cell version. sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

i have 3 javelins, an older tjn and newer nj and rs. i have never had any problems with the riser covers on the newer ones. once i broke in my rs i was in love (the yoke was initially a bit stiff) . i do also like mirages, a little blocky for me but very nice just the same in design and construction... but i have to say my next rig will probably be a rws. i was initially put off by their asthetics, but the more i found out about their design and construction the more i began to favor them (and i think their newer designs look great). sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

every load i am on , i >always< ask the group before and after me their deployment altitude and jump type. i point out that i pop at 3.5 and if i think there are any issues i arrange a different order or delay between groups. planing = increased safety and is a part of every jump ! sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

how long did it take you to get over sensory overload
cobaltdan replied to SilentJ's topic in Safety and Training
i never did a tandem, i went straight to aff. first jump visually i blacked out , i pulled but remember seeing nothing. with each jump my window of perception broadened slightly but it still took about 30 jumps for me to read the numbers on the bottom of the plane after exit. sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military) -
i am not so new...and deploy at 3.5k i fly a small canopy and prefer to have extra time for that portion of my skydive. i.e extra time in the event of a malfunction, & extra time for a clean set up and landing. interestingly i find that most freeflyers and most high performance canopy pilots deploy 'high' at 3 - 3.5. sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

hi kelly, if you faxed in the request form you should receive a call back from stacy in our office within a day to schedule. wait time depends on demand for the particular size. we have a minimum of 2 demo's of every size, some may be availabe immediately and others have long wait times..... comp cobalt: give a call in the office and i will be glad to answer any questions you have. sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

at 2.1 i land straight in all the time without taking a single step. when i go the next size down i am pushing 2.4 and have a hard time landing straight in without running. it depends on your skill level. i have watched many of our guys consistantly land straight in no steps at loadings up to 3.1 sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

thanks for the review. the hole in the plastic bag is because the factory sends a sheet to be filed by our office on every canopy. a finger is poked through the sealed bag to pull out the sheet. (mystery solved). demos and risers: most all of our canopies are on risers, but because of demand we have increased our demo fleet. on these new canopies we are waiting for an order of rws risers to arrive. rather than have people wait some demo's were shiped without risers. sorry about the inconvience. lead times were shorter for some other brands of risers but we are partial to rws. sincerely, dan atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

press section video: yes there is a mix of comp cobalts and cobalts. you can tell the difference by looking at the nose. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ = comp cobalt sincerely, dan

kelly, curious review...twitchy, oversteer, stalled.. are words you do not hear to describe a cobalt.... at 1.1 loading the canopy is below our recommended minimum (1.2) and is simply a boat. and in no way possible to be twitchy. --- as far as the nitro, i will point out that atair was the original contract manufacturer of the design. we were personally unimpressed with them compared to other canopies and were not interested in making them. several years later precision parted ways with their partnership in icarus and modeled their new product line on the icarus canopies they had been producing. given the timing they obviously did not model anything on the crossfire. the nitro design was marketed in the us unsucessfully for a few years by the german contingent and then picked up by precision to fill the crossfire/cobalt gap in their new line. my personal opinion is i dont like the fact that the winglets were added to increase stability, instead of decreasing drag (nitro winglets increase drag). overall i dont think is a bad canopy just imo in its field there are several more impressive canopies. jump what makes you happy. sincerely, dan

you may want to demo a comp. cobalt before you decide on a tri cell canopy. after a year of competitions a comp cobalt is ranked #2 on the para performance swoop circuit for distance against an almost exclusive field of tricells. sincerely, dan atair www.extremefly.com

yes, i am stane's partner. please let me know about the boogie as perhaps i can schedule with our next factory visit. btw. as this is a non gear related thread we should move it off line. sincerely, dan atair cobaltdan@hotmail.com www.extremefly.com

glide ratio: i have not seen any gps plots on the skyray yet. i would expect it to prove higher than a skyflyer due to the rigid wing, better placement of the wing (farther down on your body at your center of gravity) and higher possible speeds. next month when i see alban i will try to instrument a flight with our datalogger. sincerely, dan

no we will not be attending the wffc. the dates conflict with military commitments we have. sincerely, dan

maximum we have recorded was 256mph, well beyond normal freefly speeds. i was the test jumper under a cobalt 95 loading 2.1. a stunt that would have probably killed me under a different design canopy. definately not recommended under any canopy. cobalts were designed to reduce the chance of serious injury or death in the event of a premature deployment at freefly terminal velocity speeds(~150-180), as well as during the normally higher deployments speeds practiced in freeflying (~130-140). at boogies we routinely demonstrate intentional deployments in sits & stands, and provide video of high speed deployments in sits, stands and head down. sincerely, dan atair

skyrays can fly with a foward speed almost 3 times faster than a skyflyer and consequently will generate more lift. flat out you can not fly the two together. sincerely, dan

the contrail is performance variables version of a stilletto. we manufacture it for them. the cobalt is a different animal. you will find many comparisons and individual information in the archive on cobalts and stillettos. sincerely, dan atair

hi ltdiver, there is no trick in the line trim. the stable characteristics of the cobalt are a sum of many design variables. i.e. the choice of an aft loaded airfoil, the planform, etc... if interested more information can be viewed on our web site. sincerely, dan atair www.extremefly.com
