So you don't like the idea of altitude to deal with a problem, like a 2 out? I sure would. I'm saying let's limit the chances of 2 outs by not raising the firing altitude. As for time? I had enough time under canopy after it fired for it to open, biplane, side by side, downplane, chop my main, and navigate to a safe landing spot. For the full story of it, read this: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3014076#3014076 Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

I like to examine all the possibilities as much as the next guy, but how vanishingly small is the probability of this scenario as compared to the advantage of adding a couple hundred feet to address snivel or burbles on a normal AAD activation? You see it an advantage to activate an AAD higher if a canopy is still in process of sniveling open? Personally, I'd rather have the AAD fire at it's current parameters versus create a 2 out scenario or worse potentially foul on the partially open main by firing higher than need be, I've scared my AAD and dealt with a two out. Even at the current firing parameters had time to deal with it and find a place to land. No need to push it higher for these scenarios IMO. Agreed. Jumpers can already set offsets on their AAD already, some require you to set it each jump. others until the AAD is turned off. Granted this is not the same as simply raising the firing altitude, as offsets change the low end firing parameters too. Making a settable default firing height could be added that a jumper could config and 95% would never know or do it because they don't RTFM. Even so, I can see value in making it a rigger or manufacturer adjustable setting only. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

If an AAD's primary purpose is still for an incapacitated jumper, consider this: An incapaciated jumper's AAD fires and the incapacitation is such that the reserve opening does not revive them. A body slumped under even a reserve will cause it to turn. A canopy not under control can be influenced by wind. In these scenarios, a higher reserve opening may actually be worse as the extra altititude can allow the spin to become faster and/or the canopy more influenced by the wind. The above assumed normal on heading reserve deployments. Factor in the incapacitated person spinning in freefall and causing line twists, entanglements, etc, and a higher deployment altitude could be even more dangerous.

Wait a sec. You want us to understand the problem versus just taxing and throwing money at it? That's crazy talk. He's a witch!!! Burn him!!! Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. -

http://www.omaha.com/article/20110323/NEWS01/703239866 How short sighted. You buy stock in the bidet and sewage companies and sell short the toilet paper ones. This and any community should deal with this locally and if they can't let the fed gov't try and fine them. Wow, I didn't know we work for the same company. The only thing saving me is I get OT after 40 but the rest of that is spot on. My standard response to stupid projects and request is to question them and get enough info out of them to show them why it won't work and offer alternatives. I continue this until they agree or I get a Nike email "Just do it." At that point I save the message, do it how they want it done, and if and when it breaks, use the email as my CYA.

Fear of ending up like a good friend *NOT for the ladies*

Hey -- I can pee standing up. It's just kind of messy Wendy P. lol. I'm envious of their ability to point and shoot, not just stand. It would make outdoor activities so much easier. A few years back a skydiving girl I knew posted a picture on her MySpace of her name she wrote on the concrete. I agree the "mugger" owes the "victim" retribution. But does that really apply to the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. of theirs? Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Which is a bigger threat: Muslim extremists or the KKK?
Bolas replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
Extra irony points for using logical and religion in the same sentence. Religion is just the tool they use to manipulate others. Like any tool, education is needed to properly use. But wait, religion does not like to be questioned as it can't stand up to scrutiny. In fact the more truly educated one becomes on religions, the less and less plausible they become. I'm not saying we should ban religion, but it definitely needs to be removed from all government. I'd much prefer athiest leaders that don't think they are doing "God's work", "What Jesus wants", "Allah's will", etc. and are focused solely on what's best for the mortal plane, not the afterlife. "They" are angry because of their religious beliefs and the leaders that corrupt and use them to manipulate their followers. There's a simple system for detecting how potentially dangerous a group is. The more unprovable things they base their cause on (such as religion) the more dangerous they can be. I do not think it's right (or accurate) to point the finger exclusively in their direction. I do not think their anger is enflamed *only* by crazy religious fanaticism. I think it's hypocritical and false to assume that our countries do not contribute to the problem. I didn't say our countries don't contribute to the problem, but when they're dealing with irrational people there's only so much blame they can take. Granted, we don't always use rational people to negotiate ourselves. Much harder to convince someone to be rational when the person saying so basically believes a similar setup, perhaps just with different characters and plot. I think an affirmative action plan is necessary to make sure we indict equal numbers of people across all races and religions on terrorism charges. I demand a constant stream of self-assurance regarding whatever obscure choice I've made regarding what to lose sleep over. These equality programs always skip white people. For once that's a good thing. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. -
Really? OK. On reflection, that was snarky of me, without need. Sorry. With all due respect: My own sense, from general experience and training, is that it would probably pass constitutional muster in the view of about 80-90% of federal judges (as well as my own view). But I'm open-minded to being shown a cogent legal argument that it would be unconstitutional. Innocent until proven guilty is a big piece of it. While true there are numerous allowed processes that allow one to be searched or monitored in some way, they are location or instance specific with anothers property. None of these apply to the use or restriction of ones own property or even on their property. This breath checking device is akin to the house arrest anklets and/or the alcohol and drug detection devices court ordered to be worn by parties individuals convicted of a crime as they were found guilty. Mandating all use this or a similar device is the equivalent of detaining and putting the person on trial without probable cause. Additionally I can't think of a single other court ordered device for people convicted of a crime that has been mandated for all to now use so there's not even a precedent thankfully.
-
In your rigger example, people have a choice. The FAA is not mandating what people have to do. ABS/ESC is government mandated, just like airbags. tire inflation sensors, etc. The difference is all of those systems are passive and only take effect when needed and assist the driver and passengers. Another argument against this device. Look at it's history and what it's original and current use is. If they decided to mandate this device for all new vehicles, it would quickly be found unconstitutional. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Way to spin it. It's not telling people that at all. OK, maybe so. But call it what it is. "Prevention of the guilty" is not the same as "presumption of guilt". Don't try to demonize it by calling it something that it's not. So you don't think mandating a device such as this is a presumption of guilt? No; no more than, say, security tags on retail store merchandise are a presumption of guilt. Nor would I think so even if such tags were mandated. The world is full of security devices and measures. By and large, they're not presumptions that people are guilty; they are preventive protection against people who would misbehave if given the chance to do so. As far as I'm concerned, as long as these devices don't deliver false positives, there's greater good than harm. Of course, all devices can malfunction, and those instances could be a real bummer. Security tags are a deterrent and designed to protect their property. Body scans and searches by TSA or another security group to enter a specific area are similar. If mandated for all, this is a piece of equipment that would go on a persons personal property that won't let one start their own vehicle unless they prove they haven't been drinking. It doesn't monitor your speech or body movements (or driving habits) and then if something seems amiss makes you take a breath test, you have to prove it wrong everytime, or IOW presumption of guilt. No issue with offering it as an option on cars or requiring it for those that have gotten DUI or DWI's, but a government mandate for all is not acceptable or would likely be found not constitutional either. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Exactly. If someone or a company wants to add one of these to their car(s) for say an insurance discount or if there is consumer demand, then so be it. It should not be made a law though. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

You did all this to a rental? With your own money? I've fixed up rentals/made them livable before but always had a deal where I deducted anything I bought from my rent owed. Hope you have a long term lease or some sort of contract where they won't jack your rates/try and get you out so they can charge the next people more because you improved the place.
