And who should be apointed to decide how much too much is?

Pirana To me, the rest of his comment made it clear that his opinion is counter to how the system works. How many people here disagree with how the system works? You like taxes? Laws about drugs? Gun laws? Speeding laws? So the context made all the difference -- it says "that's my opinion, and it's counter to the way things work in America" instead of "that's my opinion and it's going to be enacted into law." Now that's a big difference. Wendy P. Were he just a private citizen I'd agree. That's a scary opinion of capitalism for the most powerful person in the free world to have. Edited to add: One with the power to make and shape policies and regulations. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. -

As I recall it was a term life insurance sufficient to cover the cost of the condo + outstanding student loans + other. So about $500k. I recall it may have included x number of jumps for $50 a month. But you also have to remember I did score off the charts when it came to the health readings. Add to it that i don't smoke and don't have any cancer in my immediate family and so I was able to get a low price. But that being said, my soon to be x wife wasn't exactly smart when she canceled the policy with out informing me. God forbid I died due to a motorcycle accident or......hell just a bad fall in the shower she would have been stuck with a $300k loan for a condo and she only makes $35k a year. Are you underwater on the condo? If not, the sale of the condo should be able to pay it off and any other debts without the need for insurance. Intent to whom? The cashier? They aren't going to care, probably not even the manager unless they get a sales based bonus. Just because you tell someone you are going to do something doesn't make it right either. Particularly if they may (wrongly) feel it doesn't effect them. The problem with all this is making the assumption that someone wouldn't be a jerk and intentionally use something and not pay for it. From what I read in the Walmart Website, it isn't even a "satisfaction guaranteed" return policy. It is a no questions asked policy. I think it would be immoral to say you weren't satisfied with the tent after using it, but in this case satisfication is not relevant. Let me reiterate this is not something I would personally do. My morals dictate that if I am satisfied with the purchase, I don't return the item. It would be immoral for me to do it, but I can't consider the act immoral in and of itself. Cheating on your spouse is intrinsically immoral. Taking advantage of a "no questions asked" return policy is not. Morality is subjective. You stating you think it's immoral yet saying it technically is moral, is contradicting yourself. Exactly. As long as both parties are okay with it. "Yes dear" is not an okay, it's a submission. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

What you described is not profiling. However, if certain criteria are unavailable and not everyone can be searched, an officer may make a judgment call based on the area they are in and the history of crime in that area, also possibly based on what the tall men around him are wearing/doing/driving. While race can be a criteria in this decision it need to be supported with reasoning for choosing it as a criteria. Trust me, I sped regularly. I just didn't get stopped. I had the same number of actual tickets as they during that time. That's profiling, in a nutshell. Wendy P. You missed my edit to clarify: As for not getting stopped, you may have just been lucky or the police were concerned more with larger things vs. minor traffic violations. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Were they stopped inititally for a violation? If so, then it was not racial profiling, but additional steps were taken to ensure they were not a threat once detained. Once determined they were not, they were let go with only a warning as a courtesy. They unfortunately matched the profile of a possible drug dealer/gang member/violent criminal apparently at the time (nice car, pager, black, etc.). Perhaps there had been incidents where officers were shot at in similar situations. That may be because you weren't breaking the law. If lots of white women in their 30's became drug dealers/gang members/violent criminals, possibly started shooting at cops regularly, they'd get the same initial treatment. It's simply reactionary, not racial.

Fixed it. The scary part is he won't even admit it is wrong and insists on defending his behavior. "Yeah it's wrong but WalMart is a bunch of fuckers." would at least be something. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. -
Why can't we use defining characteristics? The key word is profile. If there was a description of a robbery suspect should we now leave out: * Race to not be racist * Sex to not be sexist * Height to not offend midgets * Weight to not offend fat people * Color of clothing to not offend the colorblind * Best not even mention what they were wearing to not offend fashionistas The biggest issue here is people are getting mad at the cops for doing their job versus the criminals. Racial profiling is such a misnomer as a profile by definition is much more than one characteristic. Any way you look at it... they got us by the short hairs. Chuck They do if we let them. The best choice is usually not the easy choice. The easy choice thinking is what led us here, it sure won't get us out. While paying people legally their fair share may cost employers/employees more initially, it also may lead to less need for some government programs. If I intentially broke an item to have it exchanged I would be abusing the system, if I return a product I no longer desire, and they refund me my money in that basis, I am using the system not abousing it. Based on the policies they implemented themselves in order to convice people to purchase sub standard products, I was simply 'using' the system, not abusing it. read the pages in the link above to see how walmart feel about 'using the system'. Then come back to me! Semantics. You've just defined your definition of "right" differently than others might and have used their treatment of others as a basis for your decision. Do you do the same with other companies you buy from? If you had your own store, how would you feel if someone did what you were doing? Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
-
I think his point is what's "right" and what's allowed are not always the same. We all have different standards. Mine is "if this were done to me, how would I feel?" and base my actions on that. Of course, one could argue that they shouldn't have such a policy to begin with that can be abused such as this, which I also agree with. In general, if processes, systems, etc. are being abused, the onus is on both the abused and the abuser to change things to mitigate future occurrences.
