I have no desire to take this to PM. The fact that you don't like what i have to say doesn't make it childish and inane, and saying i'm not contributing to the discussion when i point out the fact that your statements are at best contradictory and at worst utterly hypocritical doesn't stop that from being true. The simple truth is, you got out of your depth. You stopped respecting the dangers. You became complacent. That is the lesson for everyone out there reading this thread. That is what we should take from this incident. All this other stuff about timing and launch and letting go early or late is relevent, yes, it's specific to this incident yes, but the underlying problem, the underlying cause is someone not showing gravity the respect that it deserves. Of course you're not going to like this. Of course you're going to get defensive, but that's the bottom line and all prospective and new jumpers reading this thread shouldn't be sidelined by the minutae of this incident but rather they should be encouraged to see the bigger issue of "respect" for an activity that DOES NOT ALLOW for the complacency or underestimation or miscalculation of deployment sequence or whatever the fuck you want to put it down to. That is the point of my post and the point of me picking up on your mixed messages. ian

You mean, you will do the jump again (3way with 2 person waterfall) but you'll do it differently (i.e. correctly) to avoid the problems which caused the near death of your friend (i.e. launch timings). Hey, that's cool. When you're trying new stuff out, then the price is often high, and i for one don't believe there is any obligation on you not to keep trying to do this jump if that is what you want and you're happy to accept the consequences. I utterly disagree that you can take full responsibility for the outcome. That's just crap. BASE is about individual responsibility....period. That includes being responsible for allowing someone else to deploy your canopy for you. Jason made a mistake (he placed his life in the hands of another jumper, possibly over estimating their and his own abilities) and he is lucky to be alive and i genuinely wish him all the best for a full recovery. I assume you mean my irony is misplaced given that a man's life was almost lost. Yes there is a certain irony here, but it certainly isn't in anything i have said. You should look closer to home. This is wake up call for you Nick. You might not get a second one. I'd advise you don't fritter it away by drawing the wrong conclusions. ian
-
So what are you saying ? You wouldn't recommend the jump to anyone else, BUT as you're so special and tough (taking a bullet for your buddy) you'll try it again someday despite the fact that in your opinion the jump is inherently flawed and that is why your friend nearly died. Super-inflated-ego is about right Nick. Public self flagellation (Oprah Winfrey style) 10 out of 10 Genuine introspection 2 out of 10 (must try harder). ian

I think Hannes might have meant that they believe there are others who have jumped this object a lot more than 5 times and to make such a claim about being the King of this object should be a cause to feel ashamed. Similar to saying i have jumped the potato bridge 5 times and nobody else has done that many off it so i am king of the bridge. that's how i read it anyway.

Hi there. I'd be keen to contact any Barcelona local jumpers as I have a work trip coming up at the end of this month and would very much like to jump whilst over. I'll be taking my rig so hope to hear from you. PM's would be great. Kindest regards ian
-
That would be impressive. 1 new object every week in your first year. I'd say that would be someone on a mission (and speed!) ian

I don't doubt it Jerry. Cos that's what's important to you. You BASE jump for the attention, anyone can see that. ian
-
You feeling like you're not the centre of attention anymore Jerry. Is that what's up? It's okay, if you want to share. ian
-
Jerry If you want people to take you seriously about this, then you've got to stop this ,frankly, boring trolling you insist on. You might have a point to make Jerry, but if you insist on playing the court jester using this alter-ego of magot, who cares what you think. I know you think your funny, but outside of your circle of mates, you're really not. ian

Dan-the-man is getting on. Got to be in his late forties now. New name perhaps....dan-the-oldman. It's a shame when you see a once fit young man go to seed. And maybe i shouldn't say anything but i noticed his 'piece' had slipped the other night when he removed his helmet. He looked very 'trump-esque' ian

****sounds of tongue being chewed off**** Okay. edited to add : that would be an adult tongue, not an infant's.

Rhonda I so wholeheartedly disagree with your reasoning here, but due to my newfound spirit of mutual respect and non confrontation i will refrain from labouring the point any further. peace ian

Delay was pretty spot on 3 seconds so the slider down 42" pc was the right thing to do. PC has a wild oscillation which certainly would have contributed to the 180, although it's impossible to say if that is the sole/main factor. What were the winds doing - was that a headwind at all, cos his closing speed on the object was very fast which implies that, or too shallow brake settings perhaps. Perhaps a slightly flatter, not so head high body position would have helped. Who knows.??? ian ps. Only other thing is just be grateful he didn't strike the metalwork with his head cos that wooly hat isn't going to give him too much protection.

What he said. I'm a heavier jumper and have freefallen my Ace310 from 220ft a bunch of times. It slams open just fine, but from then it can be prone to jellyfishing (pressure waves from nose to tail then back again) end cell closure, surging and diving and general funkiness. Below 250ft this can be interesting (sporting) cos you don't have too much time to get your shit together. Over 250ft i don't think it's too much of a problem. Having jumped a Troll for a few jumps now, i have to say I am stunned at the difference vents and valves make. The canopy opens and it is solid. Ready to receive instructions (usually bad ones from me but that's a whole other thread). The ACE i have used for a fair amount of slider up jumps (from 4secs to terminal) and to be blunt i love the way it opens. It rocks. Hasn't ever slammed me and the heading performance i find pretty tootin dependable (body position fuck ups aside). Two very different beasts but i love them both equally. ian

Thanks. My mistake. I thought it was someone who was with him when he fell but i was wrong. ian ps. Tom, if it's okay with 460, could we change the title of the thread now it's established this is an old fatality. Reading titles like that always makes my heart sink when i think we've lost another jumper.

I had Neil's last tape for many months until i handed back to Hayley for the inquest. I watched it only a week or so ago. IMHO there is nothing on that tape that suggests anything untoward. Footage shows Neil at the beach and very excited at the prospect of jumping. The pattern of footage is absolutely typical of any jumpers footage when on tour. A section of "here i am...." followed by a section of "here's where i intend to jump...." followed by a section of "look at the stinking weather.." followed by his building jump followed by a change of location and the pattern again at the beach. Neil was not jumping with any of his regular jumping friends but footage from his camera reveals that after checking out the climb in person he decides to wait to hook up with someone who was familiar with the climb and his last section of footage is him on the beach waiting for them to turn up. He mentions in the footage that he believed other jumpers were on the island. I don't recall where, possibly Blinc, but the person who was with him at the time of his death posted a very moving account and revealed that Neil died in his care whilst awaiting rescue. I hope Neil's parents will eventually come to terms with his tragic death. ian

This is a bona fide B. Period. No one who saw this would argue otherwise unless they were a mentalist. In fact this is more of a B than any "B under construction" as it fits more of the recognised criteria, insomuch as it has walls and has been occupied in the past. It's also very low my friend. Looks no higher than 150ft.?????? would also like to see the gimme a B article you spoke of 460. ian
-
So he took me off his friends list. I've cancelled that account now. Made me feel.......cheap. ian
-
would have to see it, but probably an O, or like faber says, an M. Is it square based or circular based? Can anyone come up with an object for Z? ian
-
And i did have the bait well and truly set. Here's my fake web page. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=68032452 Check out who is now on my list of trusted friends. I guess i might still be able to get some bullshit out of him yet. ian ps. The picture is of a friend i work with and yes i have her permission

Man someone blew it....... He has rumbled that he's been rumbled and has removed all the basejumping photos and has replaced it with one of him (ugly twat too) giving the finger. Shame cos that could have been a lot of fun. One of the great fun aspects of basejumping is social engineering (convincing someone you are trustworthy and allowing them to reveal information they really shouldn't). Steaming in there all guns blazing just isn't the way of the ninja. D- must try harder. Big mouth strikes again. ian

So I registered, and now I'm waiting to see if he'll accept me as one of his "friends". If yes then i can post some comments on his page. Nothing hurtful, just some questions about his hobby and those photos of him. Has anyone else got on his friends list yet? That seems to be the key to enter the kingdom of Griffin (adventurer and explorer extraordinaire!)
-
Jason honey i know they're your photos and all that, but don't you go spoiling the fun now. There's some mileage to be had here. ian
-
Do it. Play him like a prize winning fish. ian
