  1. I'm pretty sure the Tension Free CRW team was from that neck of the woods. Feisty, Daryl, Bob ...those guys? Although I'm not sure they were farmers. Russ
  2. After all, you can always freefall after your CRW jump is over :-) W As in a cutaway!
  3. Fort Campbell - Son DZ -Sorry it's no more! All I can say is that was one hell of a great place to learn to skydive. I learned on T10's, LL's, PC's, and early squares while at Ft. Campbell in the late '70's. The demos, the friends, the club... I got out of the Army in December of '79 with 750 jumps - all from Hueys. I had a blast! As a kid who grew up watching "Ripcord" and "Sky King", and who had made sereral jumps from the second story of my home, I had fulfilled my childhood dreams by learning to skydive at Ft. Campbell. In fact, I would later jump with Lyle Cameron, Carl Boenish, Rande Deluca, and all these other people I admired when I was younger. I'm very fortunate. I joined the Army in 1976 with the ambition of being a paratrooper in the 509th Airborne - stationed in Italy. I had grand thoughts of military jumping, and off-time spent cruising some cobblestone street with some Maria and a bottle of wine.
  4. Quote I remember the Howard out at Elsinore. It was slower than shit, but quite the workhorse. Had wooden wings, didn't it?
  5. You have some great photos. Here's my PC from the late 70's.
  6. I think he was referring to the B-200.
  7. You know that Doc Johnson showed up a Perris last year and started jumping again. I gave him his first hook up. ---------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, I hadn't seen Doc in 20 years. He looks good. Boy a lot has changed since the last time I saw him. A number of us will be out at Perris the 22nd & 23rd to fly as targets for the Woman's World Record practice dives. The girls are planning to put up a 36-way in April down at Lake Wales. Please stop by and say hi if you're out that weekend. We usually pack near the water fountain by the loading area. Russ
  8. Thanks Bill. No shortage of rainy days here. -Russ
  9. Were you around when we built the night 10 stack in 80 or 81? Sparky My log shows a night 10-stack on 3/21/81. I'm #9. I have pretty good records from those days. Unfortunately, I don't have the names on that dive. I do remember we took that one low. In May of that year I show a 9-stack with Rande Deluca, Perry Armstrong & Norm Kent. How 'bout that for some names from the past. Russ
  10. Here is a night CRW shot from 1981 that I am extremely proud of. http://bapinney.com/russ/night_diamond2.jpg
  11. Hi Bill, Don't some of you old Air Trash guys have a photo of Gypsy Dave? A ground shot. Playing hacky sack, hanging out at his camper, something? Russ
  12. Sorry Tom, I don't know who the Army Sergeant was. He wasn't from the 101st Airborne, I can tell you that. I started doing CRW in the Army back in '78 or '79 and then came home (So. Cal.) and picked up with Doc Johnson and the Perris CReW. Did we ever meet at Perris? Russ
  13. I think we've met a time or two over the years. Maybe you'll recognize me in the attachment - I'm the guy on the right! Also, thought you might get a kick out of seeing the old Wizard pin. I jumped with Gypsy Dave, Jimmy Crawford, Bear, Wookie, Doc, Joe Morgan, Bill Hallum, Space, Gary Brown ...all those guys. After a while I was so heavy into CRW that I didn't do to much RW anymore. And yes, I am looking for a photo of Gypsy Dave. Russ
  14. QuoteI haven't found a picture of Dave yet, but I am still looking. I appreciate it Mike. Do these wings look familiar? Looks like Gypsy Dave jewelry to me! How about this stamp on the back of an old skydiving photo? Russ
  15. Do any of you old Perris jumpers have a photo of Gypsy Dave?
  16. I was at the 1979 Nationals. I drove there with a fellow soldier from Ft. Campbell, Ky. We had planned on spending the couple of bucks we had on a few dives just to say we had been there. Unfortunately, my friend lost the keys to the car and we spent the little bit of money we had on a locksmith. We did manage to make a dive or two. Already into CRW, and with a lifetime of CReW jumping in front of me, I can't believe I missed the opportunity to jump with some of the CRW people present at the meet. Some of the names are familiar, and I think I caught up with a few of you out at Perris when I got out of the Army. Still doing CRW. 17. Rumor has it that you are going to repeat this performance on the Women's World Record
  18. What a quitter! Seriously dude, I owe you myself and forgot. I hope you haven't been harboring this resentment all this time. After all, it was a couple of months ago that I cutaway. I'll see you soon and buy you your favorite drink. Sassperilla, isn't it?
  19. was that tim that hit you that hard? or was it me jumping tim's canopy? It was my old buddy Frank. You know, always out to kill me. Have a nice Thanksgiving, bro! Russ
  20. Hi Andre, I'm not sure if one canopy is more vulnerable than another to a hard line dock. Some of the folks who understand the dynamics of the canopies used for CRW may be able to provide some input. Personally, the AR-7 was my favorite canopy for rots. Russ
  21. The video of the tersh deployment was shot in 1982. The footage in the second video was shot in 1997. The Lightning I cutaway in '97 is the same one I used on the 70-way last year. Skies, Russ
  22. As promised, here is the footage of the 1982 tersh deployment. Like I said, it's 3rd or 4th generation video shot from the ground. If you think thats fun to watch then you may enjoy the second video. On this dive one of my teammates hits me hard from behind collapsing my canopy. it causes a wicked spin from which I cannot recover. Once again, my trusty Featherlite saves the day. Disclaimer: Kids don't try this at home. Russ http://bapinney.com/russ/wrap2.wmv http://bapinney.com/russ/wrap1.wmv
  23. --------------------------------------------------------- We used them at the 1982 Nationals. Our team had a bad wrap on one dive and Doc Johnson and I ended up in a hellacious whirly. I was orbiting him like a rag doll. He yelled to me "what do you want to do?" Hell, I had been trying to cutaway for awhile. He thought I was unconscious, so he deployed his tersh (I wasn't wearing mine). I skipped over the deploying bag and bridle on several orbits before finally getting a hold of the cutaway handle. (We have footage from the ground of the wrap and cutaway with me spinning out of frame on my back as Doc's tersh opens). I flipped over as soon as I could and dumped my Featherlite. Doc floated down under the tersh for a short time and then cut the attachment bridle with a knife. He dumped his reserve after that. I still have my tersh in my closet. I don't recommend them. -Russ Pinney
