  1. Your link is a complete mishmash of junk, which is not surprising considering the source. If you believe any of that, you should also know that the shortage of pirates is what is causing the climate to warm. I guess that would be one interpretation of the the Gates Foundation efforts towards giving women control of their lives through access to education and birth control. If you interpret things that way, I guess I would be equally correct in stating that you want to ban girls from school and keep them pregnant, barefoot, and confine them to the kitchen or bedroom. How very talibanish of you! Anyway, thanks for proving my point that any effort towards actually helping the poor would be used by some people (i.e. you) as a reason to attack them. What awful things would you have to say about someone who helped the blind to see, or (Heaven forbid!) brought a dead person back to life! 2. I'd nominate Bill Gates. Of course, he's spent the last 20 years or so spending buckets of his own money fighting a variety of tropical diseases and otherwise trying to make poor people's lives better. That would automatically label him corrupt, untrustworthy, or just a freak in the eyes of about 50% of the US population. 3. And, on a final note... I dislike Trump; but I dislike Hillary more. So the bottom line is, if you have any political ambitions it is good to be a self-serving narcissistic bully who sends jobs out of the country, screws over employees and contractors, brings in foreign workers instead of hiring Americans, knowingly promotes conspiracy theories based on lies, and so on, and it is contemptible to ensure AIDS and malaria patients have access to medication, or that poor people have access to education or loans to help them start small businesses. Got it! Don _____________________________________ Tolerance is the cost we must pay for our adventure in liberty. (Dworkin, 1996) “Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire.” (Yeats)
  4. In this case, the evidence is overwhelming and so I doubt the delay is due to the prosecution not being ready. Since it is a death penalty trial, I would speculate that the 18 months is to allow the defense to prepare for trial. Also, while I don't know if this problem applies to Roof's case, in many districts Republicans have blocked Obama's nominees to all levels of federal courts, creating long backlogs. This article describes the problem; although it is two years old the problem has only become worse since then. 6. Often the police are not approaching people from the front, making eye contact and ensuring they have a person's attention before issuing "orders". Generally the "orders" are shouted from behind or from some distance, and are unexpected. Perhaps you are suggesting deaf people should wear a flashing neon sign that says "deaf"? Maybe people should be legally barred from listening to music too, as that may interfere with them hearing, immediately understanding, and instantaneously responding to someone shouting "orders" out of the blue? As far as the autistic are concerned, should they also wear a sign? Maybe be kept on a leash? Obviously that would be better than being subject to extermination for failure to instantaneously comply with "orders". 7. You seem to be implying that it's OK for a cop to kill someone because they are deaf and can't hear the "orders" or they are autistic and don't understand what is going on. Do the police not have any responsibility to assess the situation and determine if there is an actual threat, beyond a failure to instantly comply? 8. I have complete confidence that the military would not comply with such an order. I am just interested in the process, does the President have authority on their own to launch a nuclear attack? Ideally Congress should have to approve a declaration of war first, but there have been many military actions over the past 50 years without an actual declaration of war. Also Congress approved legislation giving Bush II blanket authority to launch an invasion of Iraq, and it has been argued that that legislation in effect gives any President authority to take a similar action without prior approval from Congress. Further, it would be trivial for a Trump administration to fabricate some pretext for immediate action, especially given their evident disdain for fact checking. 9. This raises an interesting question: can the President order a nuclear attack all on his/her own, or do they need support from Congress or anyone else? I'm talking about initiating a nuclear attack, not retaliating when enemy missiles have been launched against the US. If The Donald got his panties in a wad and ordered a nuclear strike on Berlin because Merkle (just for the sake of an example) "disrespected" him, would the military be obligated to follow through or could they refuse? 10. Now the Trump campaign is blaming Obama and Clinton for Captain Humayun Kahn's death. Captain Kahn died in 2004, long before Obama's first election and long before Clinton's tenure as secretary of state. When he died the Bush administration was in office and set the rules of engagement. I doubt that such details will matter to Trump's true believers. 11. Stop-and-frisk was not stopped because of Black Lives Matter, it was stopped because it is blatantly unconstitutional. No doubt crime could be reduced if the police were free to ignore details like probable cause, freedom of speech, freedom of association, the need for warrants, etc. Of course, we would then be living in a police state. Would that be an improvement? I'm sure it would.... for the police! Don _____________________________________ Tolerance is the cost we must pay for our adventure in liberty. 12. Because the title of the thread; "Teens shot at for playing Pokemon in Florida..." I'm wondering how the OP knew the shooter knew they were playing pokemon. ***This guy is a poster child for irresponsible and dangerous gun owners. Are you seriously defending him? Agreed and no, I am not defending him. Derek VApologies for misconstruing the intent of your post. I see your point with the question, "Teens shot at while playing Pokemon..." would have been more accurate. 13. What does that have to do with anything? They were not trespassing on his or anybody's property. They were not doing anything illegal. They were minding their own business when the shooter decided to confront them, and when they drove off he shot at them. In what world would that be appropriate behavior? This guy is a poster child for irresponsible and dangerous gun owners. Are you seriously defending him? 14. Let's say the cop hit his target, and killed an autistic patient for holding a toy truck. And he did so while the therapist was trying to tell the cops the guy was a patient and was only holding a toy truck? How would that be any better? I think this incident highlights a big part of the problem: cops showing up and "taking action" without bothering to find out anything about the actual situation. Even if you try to tell them what is really going on, you can't or they don't listen (as in this case). If cops are going to make snap decisions, of course that is a perfect situation for their unconscious biases to influence their decision making. A while ago I read an article about how the deaf are disproportionately likely to have a violent encounter with the police, as are the mentally challenged (such as the autistic fellow in Miami). The problem was explained to be that the police are trained to expect immediate compliance with their orders, and to treat any hesitation as resistance and a threat. Of course that puts people who can't hear, and people who can't understand, in danger. That also applies to people who don't understand English well, such as in the incident in Alabama a while ago where a visitor from India was body slammed to the ground, breaking his neck and paralyzing him, because he could not understand and comply with the cops. Another factor seems to be people who misinterpret a situation (again often according to their biases), call 911, and then the cops don't take the time to determine if the caller described the situation accurately. I can think of many instances that resulted in death or significant injury to an innocent person. The police should know that such 911 calls are extremely subjective and are likely to completely misinterpret an innocent situation. 15. Quote: "Post-bankruptcy Trump has been highly reliant on money from Russia . . . " Hey turtle, how is this different than people donating to the Clinton Foundation? Oh, oopsie, he's a Republican. Jerry Baumchen Nope. Not a republican. Investments in business opportunities is different than donation to a foundation. I would have thought you could figure that out. I guess not. They are indeed quite different. Donations to the Clinton foundation go towards funding microloans to help poor people start their own business, protection for elephants against poaching, providing AIDS for the poor, etc. None of the donations find their way into the Clinton's pockets. Investment in The Donald's businesses go towards profit-making ventures, and a large share of the profits go directly into The Donald's pocket. Which one do you will be more likely to directly affect policy? Don So you are in no doubt that Saudi Arabia and those others listed are so worried about or poor people that figured sending money to the Clinton foundation was the best option. You sofunnay!I do not read minds, so I can't speak to the motives that might apply to Saudi Arabia. However, if they were trying to buy influence it seems odd that the contributions were made in 2014, after Hilary Clinton had left the post of Secretary of State. Republicans have introduced legislation, termed the CLINTON Act, which would bar foundations with any connection to anyone who had previously held a high government position from ever accepting donations from any foreign source. "CLINTON" is short for "Contributions Legally Interdicted from Noncitizens to Our Nonprofits", of course it is not targeted to the Clinton Foundation, the name is just a "coincidence". Never mind that this legislation would eviscerate the work of the Carter Foundation, which does fantastic work to eliminate a number of tropical diseases in the developing world. No sacrifice is too great when it comes to screwing over the Clintons, it seems, especially when the sacrifice is borne by the poor and the sick. Of course, such a ban would have no effect on charitable foundations established by former Republican presidents, because there are none. Republican former presidents have established no such charities. Apparently they have other priorities for how to spend their time and money. Both the Bushes do have foundations which exist to support their presidential libraries. On the other hand, Turtle, it seems you are just fine with the cosy business relationship between the Republican nominee and the Russian president and his cronies. Perhaps you prefer your corruption straightforward and uncomplicated, a simple transaction from Putin to The Donald's pocket. No side trips through support for fighting disease or poverty, just a straight line from A to B. At least now it is easier to understand the bromance between Trump and Putin. It is also easy to understand why Trump will not release his tax returns, as those returns would reveal the extent to which Trump is dependent on Russian money to keep his businesses afloat. 18. This one almost fits, except the pastor was white. Link BTW the police officer who did the shooting was on an undercover drug sting even though he had been on the force only 40 days and had not completed his firearms training, and had received no instruction on the permissible use of deadly force. Also BTW note that you can be killed by the police even if you are not black. Don _____________________________________ Tolerance is the cost we must pay for our adventure in liberty. 20. You don't. You get justice. What would you consider to be "justice" if you're dead? Stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of your life? Bankrupted by medical bills? Money can't fix everything. Often it barely helps if it arrives years after it is needed, at the end of a long lawsuit, and the lawyers take most of it.
