So its settled then? Allow enough exit separation and at the end of the dive turn 180 & track away? The rule of thumb for "enough separation" that I was given this summer was to allow 5-6 seconds per 10mph of uppers. AMDG

Here's my experience with my AFF training at the Jim Wallace School in Perris, California this July 2003. We were taught to pull each away fully from the body using both hands and to let them go. 1. Look red, grab red with both hands. 2. Look silver, pull red extending your arms fully and letting go of the handle. 3. Grab silver, with both hands, pull silver, extending your arms fully and letting go of the handle.

What I can only describe as "sheer terror" was replaced by healthy fear on maybe AFF3 or 4. It does get easier as you go along.

If your best friend came up to you and said, "Listen man, you know we're best friends, right? Let's sign a contract that says we're best friends for life, and then if we ever decide not to be best friends, we go to court and you give me half your stuff." You'd be like, "That's retarded." wouldn't you?

Life Insurance for skydivers
RippedCord replied to mcrocker's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
http://www.skydivingmagazine.com/ques01.htm#Life Insurance for Skydivers Q. I'm thinking of diving for the first time next month. This would be a tandem jump, I understand, with an experienced instructor. I have one concern. While I know the chances of anything going dreadfully wrong are slim indeed, I still have a daughter in college. And, well, that weighs on me. My life insurance does not cover such a problem. Is insurance available? A. Yes, insurance is available. Check with several good agents, or contact Blue Skies Association, telephone (888) 999-5449. The organization has a variety of insurance options to cover risky sports like skydiving. AMDG -
What do the freeflyers need to do? Can someone describe the overall jump formation to me. I'd be willing to try, but at this point I'd be unsure what I'd be volunteering to do. AMDG

...or not understanding the law of independent trials. However, as a jumper has more and more jumps under his belt without cutaways or accidents, one may make a case that this is a person who(perhaps through careful equipment examination, packing procedures, and conservative landing maneuvers) falls into a cohort of the population whose statistics are better than average and is less and less likely to have a malfunction. I'll second Tom's recommendation here--especially his comments on how the tandem gives you a good idea of what freefall and the parachute ride will be like without having to worry about all the information you'll be asked to absorb on AFF1. I did a tandem, then bought his "Jump!" book and signed up for AFF1. Immediately after AFF1, I also bought "The Skydivers Handbook" by Dan Poynter and Mike Turoff. Between these two books, you should be pretty well covered, and the order in which I've mentioned them here is the order in which I'd recommend reading them. Enjoy! Its the most amazing thing I've ever done. AMDG

Make sure both of your hands are empty and use BOTH arms. Of course, Michele will coach you and freely offer corrective positioning advice should your hug be off ::innocent look, eyes upper left, whistling:: One of the fabuous qualities about Michele is that there's no mindreading necessary. So, fear not, you will be in good hands! Also, I believe she comes wrapped with instructions: 1. Smile 2. Hug 3. Enjoy 4. Repeat. AMDG

I did my tandem on August 12th 2002. It wasn't until July 2003 after being inside, sick for 3 days, that I called up Jim Wallace School and said "Sign me up for AFF training." Delayed assimilation? AMDG
