I like the technical inaccuracies that really make it feel like it's in the future - forgetting that broken bones take a bit longer than Three! Whole! Days! to heal, and that people back then have two kidneys, not one, and giving away all of one's kidneys would be suicide. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

So, you're saying they had about as much quality control as your profile's completeness and your post's spelling, punctuation, and capitalization? That's awful. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Wouldn't you want to hold your nose and try to suck through it while it's held, because the goal is to reduce the pressure on the inside of the eustachian tubes to match the reducing pressure on the ride to altitude? Blowing air is for people going (descending) to higher pressure, like divers. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Gasoline is sometimes referred to as "dino juice", or an equivalent, because it's made out of fossilized material from the age of dinosaurs. -=-=- I have heard it more eloquently put "Never bring a knife to a gunfight". However, I prefer "Never bring a pistol to a gunfight." -=-=-=-=- Pull.

By "to some extent", do you mean that hard riser-side cutaway cable housings could still allow tight twists in the risers to cause a hard or impossible cutaway? Or do you mean there are other factors in the difficulty of a cutaway that are not addressed by hard riser-side cutaway cable housings, e.g. dirty cables? -=-=-=-=- Pull.

That's a good point, but in the U.S., calling it "RAPS" doesn't make any sense at all. We think it's either a kind of music or someone knocking their knuckle on something to get attention. And with "Static Line", we call it "Static Line Progression" to take into account the training that happens after the dope rope is no longer necessary. (I can't say we call it that all over the U.S., just at my DZ.) -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Let's not devolve this thread into a patent system debate - that would be SoapBox material. PD does seem to give some credit to the earlier removable slider work on the link SpongeBob posted. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Well, the skyhook is shit hot because it's like a pilot chute with nearly 100% aerodynamic efficiency. (It may actually exceed 100% aerodynamic efficiency, if the detached canopy maintains some lift for a short period.) By that I mean for every foot you separate from your detached main, the skyhook virtual pilot chute moves an entire foot away from you and toward deploying the reserve. With real reserve pilot chutes loosed by regular RSLs, as you fall the air produces drag on the PC but it's a lot less efficient (i.e. slower / requires more altitude). BTW, from what I understand Bill isn't forcing anyone to take a skyhook if they don't want it. You can hardly blame him for marketing it - if it weren't for those pretty pictures and reminders that it opens so fast the reserve almost doesn't have time to get line twists, most of us probably wouldn't know what a Skyhook is. Then how would we clamor for rigs that come with it? -=-=-=-=- Pull.

If RAPS is the British equivalent of "Static Line", then you would do well to search this forum for the countless "debates" on this. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

I keep spraining my thumb on landing

So are you ready to do 2 way with Barbie from 3500 If it's just me and Barbie, I'll do a Mr. Bill and we'll land it together. Offer void if Jeannie is in the picture too. -=-=-=-=- Pull. -
I get concerned just seeing them drop onto the big puffy tuffet. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Just as many bad things can happen in 120 days if a jumper doesn't take care of their gear. The number of days is less important than the care an owner takes. Excellent point! I suggest the FAA (or Congress, on behalf of FAA) legislate that jumpers take care of their gear. Until that works out, the 120 day repack cycle seems like a workable compromise. The 120 days vs. 180 days seems to me to be a question of paranoia. The FAA is more paranoid than the equivalent in other nations. Doesn't bother me that much - an extra $50 per year is like three jumps... -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Find a good, nice, attractive packer and get him or her to help you with some tips. Karenmeal fits the bill at Snohomish. She showed me some minor tricks that totally make it better. Squish this part, air out at this time, hand here before making that fold, etc. and now sometimes when I put my canopy in the bag, it looks like a folded up canopy! -=-=-=-=- Pull.

I keep spraining my thumb on landing
FrogNog replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hookitt, for the video, I think you can just imagine a feet-knees-hands landing that was almost a soft standup. Acme, maybe you should trim your nails? Maybe it's that 8 mm of extra leverage the ground is getting on your thumb that's getting you. -
I would just check the pants out for anything that could be a snag hazard. Some clothing comes with extraneous clips, loops, or buttons that I wouldn't want presenting even a teeny chance of catching on a line or something. If I see something like that but I otherwise want to wear it jumping, I get out the scissors.

The theory I have read is that the back half of the canopy can try to fly over the front half of the canopy if it opens with the brakes not set. I'm not sure how that could end up, but it doesn't sound good. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

In an emergency exit I don't plan to be in that much of a hurry. I have been considering doing this on some hop and pops, but it just isn't my time yet. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Academically speaking, I assume if the manufacturer tested certified two different packing methods, then the rigger could have a choice whether to pack to open faster or slower. I do agree with your main point that the rigger is supposed to follow the reserve mfgr's instructions, however. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

I figure a fellow skydiving brother should get a price break. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

I'm sure I could figure out and fix your problem for $50 / hour. But if it's not worth a lot of money to you, I think you will have to just make it look good enough on some sort of paper map between real jumps and database jumps. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

Open discussion on discipline effort choice
FrogNog replied to skipro101's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am basically in the same boat as you but I don't really care. I'm slowly getting better at RW and freeflying even though I'm "behind" some of my co-jumpers with fewer jumps than me. And it's fun. Probably the worst part is not being able to tell people what my intended "discipline" is. But mixing it up means it's always new and different. And different disciplines can reinforce each other. (Already mentioned in the other posts; I feel the same.) For me the part of each skydive that really makes it worthwhile is when I jump out of the plane. As long as I do that, it's a skydive and everything else is just details. (I do like to land in one piece, too. ) P.S. I hear tell that to be an AFF-I, the appropriate discipline is something like "fly like a bat possessed". -=-=-=-=- Pull.
