  1. The force on the ripcord will be the mass of the hanging part of the ripcord and handle multiplied by the acceleration. E.g. if the handle and cable together weigh 1/2 pound[1] and peak opening acceleration is 5 Gs, the pulling force would be 2.5 pounds. Other examples are left as an exercise to the reader. Anybody know how much a hollow steel tubing ripcord handle, about 24" of 3 mm steel cable, and a swaged terminal for that cable weighs (masses)? Anybody else know what average peak canopy opening acceleration is? Footnote: [1] technically, pounds are weight, not mass. When I say "together weigh 1/2 pound" I mean "together mass ~1/64 slugs" or "together weigh 1/2 pound at 1 gravity". We can safely ignore this. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

  3. Dammit, they screwed up the shirts. This had the opportunity to become another big t-shirt thing (think strongbad), but they bunged it. The one with the monkey and the wrench should say "TrunkMonkey" under it, not "professional monkey inside." "TrunkMonkey" would have everyone looking at the picture and asking "What's a trunk monkey?" "Professional monkey inside" does not have that affect.   8. Ah, I see my error now. A removable-slider-only vs. either a non-removable slider with attached, removable bag and PC ("partial RDS", perhaps) vs. a remove-everything ("full RDS"). Anyway, _my_ largest canopy performance problems aren't in the deployment or reefing system. So I'm just on the sideline here.
  9. If the canopy was made of steel, I would jump out of it. Wait, I do. It's _probable_ that we should count the weight of the canopies into the wingloading numbers. It's practical to just hop on the scale and call it good, and this errs on the side of caution. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

  13. 3800 jumps and you don't yet know that the most important part of skydiving is looking cool? Actually, the posts at canopyPiloting.com seemed to say that the improvement in canopy performance could be felt. Some of the posters mentioned they had no idea that the standard d-bag and collapsible PC was causing any issues until they took it off and were surprised by the difference. The original poster has an 85 sq ft main according to his profile. He might be in a position to notice a perf difference (which I am assuming would have some swoop difference). -=-=-=-=- Pull.

  15. I'm not getting on anyone's case, but this sport is largely about personal responsibility. There are definitely rigs out there that I wouldn't jump, or I would only hop-and-pop. 100% worn-out velcro happens. It should be replaced. The gear owner should do it. If someone is renting it out, they "should" replace it at some point, but they'll sort of decide when on their own. And they won't know what's wrong with every rig necessarily, if they don't inspect it themselves well enough to notice and nobody tells them. My advice is to check the rigs over yourself, and if you don't like it, don't jump it (and go ahead and explain why you want to jump something else). Learn as much as you can about what gear should and does look like, and you will continually get better at catching most things. (There are probably still going to be things that only a rigger in the know would catch.)
  16. I have what I think is a slightly different standpoint. I agree that students shouldn't, because they can't, be told about everything that could, has, or is suspected to have gone wrong with the gear they're going to jump. But the DZ putting the students in that gear can choose what gear to use. In this case, the failure of adjustable MLW harnesses suggests to me that it's not about telling students what has happened, it's about not using those harnesses. I'm in agreement with someone important who said a while back (and it's entirely likely this wasn't a revelation): the jumper should come apart before the harness does. (Or, to put it another way, harnesses should... not... fail.) The fact that they sometimes do is all part of skydiving and the waiver, along with all the other things that sometimes happen. (Including that other quote, "gear can kill you in ways nobody has yet imagined.") -=-=-=-=- Pull.

  19. Exactly what I'm saying. If it's packed slider up and you forget that, then make a jump where you really want it to be slider down, and think you packed it slider down, then that could be bad. If you packed it recently, then you have a better chance to remember how it's packed. Although, I think in the fat list I saw someone who jumped something packed the wrong way less than a day after packing it, so it's no guarantee. I'm just saying if it's important how it's configured, and it's been packed a long time, can you trust that it's configured right? If it doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

  21. Exactly what I thought about. I have decided that if I'm going to fly, it's going to be for my reasons alone and I'll have to be able to afford it. And I sure can't afford it right now!

    My Leg Hurts...

    I had a bicycle slide/fall so I know what the road rash feels like. It (my big shin scrape) would throb anytime I got up from sitting, or anytime I stopped walking. But the worst part, the most painful part, was pulling the bandage tape off the hair on my butt to change the gauze. lol At least that was over after a week. Oh, and growing completely new skin on my ankle was cool. It was a small spot so it didn't freak me out too much. But scabs should never be that deep. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
