  1. Here are projected initial tsunami arrival times for Alaska and west coast US and Canada. http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/2010/02/27/725245/05/webeta725245-05.txt For Hawaii - 11:19am HST today
  2. I hereby grant you permission to use my "poem" in that fashion as long as you derive no financial gain from its use. All science is built upon the foundations laid down by those who have gone before.
  3. THIS IS NOT CORRECT!!!!!!!!! Believe it or not, I am the original author of that cheer. In 1969 I was a student at FIT in Melbourne, FL, and as a pledge to the Delta Delta Tau Fraternity I was assigned to write some cheers for an upcoming basketball game. Among them was that cheer. Originally it was: e to the x dy dx, e to the x + C secant tangent cosine sine 3.14159 GO ENGINEERS! I have no idea how it eventually got to MIT but I was very surprised to hear it a few years ago on a televised MIT football game (with the changes). We did have some fraternity brothers from Mass at that time and maybe that's how it got there. I dunno! But now I am now officially claiming credit for it! I have proof and there are still living people who remember it! (I have no other claims to fame so I am going to rightfully claim this one.
  4. According to USGS.gov site the quake was 13.7 mi deep. It also shows the Moment Tensor Solution which shows that the quake was a "strike-slip" type of earthquake rather than a "thrust" type. Strike-slip is less likely to produce tsunamis. Look at: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2010teb2.php#details

  6. I wouldn't know. I never gained engineer status. I fell off the train after 2 years. (Who was the d*****s who built a college so close to the beach!)

  8. I have several friends who have been involved with NASA and the space program since the 70's who are echoing your thoughts. To paraphrase a comment I heard just this morning on the radio.... It may take years to assemble a similar collection of scientists, engineers and technicians when these are forced to disburse and find other work because of the ending of the Shuttle program and the cancellation of the Constellation project. I think the cost of that loss by itself can't be measured. (not to mention the loss of any future technological "by-products" spun off by the space program.)

    To "riggers"

I hope your "reserve packer" isn't the same guy who is packing your main!
  10. We don't need Brokaw to explain Canada to us Floridians. We have plenty of actual Canadians down here that spontaneously explain things for us. Well,....... that and the Red Green Show.
  11. Maybe the dog was just trying to stay warm.........OK, I'm outta here.
  12. Ain't it great to see democracy in action!?
  13. the vote count for the manager and not sure haven't changed in awhile (892 and 1053). Refreshing the page shows council count (3987) rising rapidly.
  14. Vote faster!!! I think we broke thier poll Either that, or the City Manager is sitting in his office clicking his ass off!
  15. Trust me! No one really wants you to do that.......yet!
  16. [reply...........................I am just saying that at this point the OP is a fairly new jumper. I would just advise she continue to learn to fly her body. ............................... I have to disagree on this point. If, even (especially!) at 50 jumps, she's struggling to fly with her group jump after jump she is probably feeling very frustrated and she is not incrementally gaining RW skills. She's basically wasting her valuable freefall time (not to mention that of the other jumpers in the group) trying to fall fast. This might make a person just give up on RW. On the other hand, if she strapped on a few pounds of lead and spent her time actually doing RW during her jumps she'll feel like she's getting somewhere and she will be able to fine-tune the amount of weight she needs. Meanwhile, she's having fun, her interest is kept up and she's picking up flying skills. The post-dive debrief will be more fun, too. Simple...... just get some weights.
  17. You could always do "freestyle".......... not that there's anything wrong with that!
  18. ------------------------------------------------------------ Naw, I'd just say, Hey ya wanna take a shower, enjoy a little water sports.... I wondered how long it would take for someone to suggest another selection......DURING!
  19. I have NEVER seen a situation where a vest was a better choice than a belt. Ever. It just doesn't make sense in terms of balance. CG is around the waist/hips - that is where the weights need to be - it's not rocket science at all......................................... Yep! I agree, especially since I'm built with long legs and a high waist. I got the vest when I was first attempting RW and was told to get one. The important thing is to try to keep most of the dive in the middle of your fall-rate range and if you are bending and pulling limbs in to get down to the formation you will have little ability to adjust when you get there. And, responding to billvon ...... a few (maybe most?) women I've seen with weights use a vest rather than a belt. Also, I once borrowed a rig from a friend that had weights built-in to the back of the container. This seemed to be much more comfortable in the air. An added bonus was that during the opening sequence the weights were not felt tugging on my body during deceleration. This does add to fatigue during a day with several jumps. There is an advantage to being a "lightweight" -- once you start doing larger formations your slot will likely be on the outer perimeter of the formations. You get to be an early floater or late diver. And when things start to go bad in the middle you can bug out earlier.
  20. Weights have been mentioned but it's not just the amount of weight that makes the difference. Experiment with different positions and distributions for the weights. I'm tall and skinny and I was having trouble keeping up early on so I started with a vest. I kept adding weight and it wasn't really getting me within a comfortable flying range. Someone suggested moving the weights closer to my hips and it made all the difference in the world for me. I was able to remove and add weight to fit the dive plan and I also was able to use less weight overall. (Now, with age, I bend less easily so more weight becomes necessary.) Different body forms will require different placements for the weights. They are a bit uncomfortable but you'll get used to them.
  21. You haven't noticed any unusual looking "pods" laying around, have you?
  22. Even if the IRS wanted to pull such a stunt for "publicity" purposes, congress would not allow it. They would be denied the chance to be seen "bringing home the bacon" to their "constitchents"....Senator Phogbound style. Magnanimously doling out your money on such a large scale is their job.....not yours.
  23. The lottery commission really doesn't care one way or the other. As far as they're concerned they could either pay you and let you be responsible for the taxes or they could pay you your share and forward Caesar's the government's share to the IRS as "withholding". I believe they are required to withhold taxes by the IRS. Taking the lump sum or taking payments over 20 years would be the winner's choice. Taxes will be withheld either way. If you decide to take the lump sum payment you will not get the full amount because they do not have the full amount. The advertised value of the lottery jackpot is paid out as an annuity and is funded by investing some of the "take" in bonds, etc. Also, after the initial withholding is taken out the gov't probably will be back for more later.
