  1. I use the same method for folding a canopy with a tail pocket into a skydiving container for both CRW jumps and practice jumps with my BASE canopies. After you have the lines in the tail pocket grab the canopy by the tail pocket holding on to the lines where they come out of the tail pocket. This is so that the lines will not be pulled out of the tail pocket when you move the canopy. Place your other hand under the canopy towards the top to hold the packjob together while you place the canopy behind the container with the tail pocket face down in the main pack tray. The nose of the canopy will be facing up at this point. Now stow the risers and dress the nose of the canopy as you'd like. Dress the canopy to the width of the container. Fold the top of the canopy over so that it is in the main pack tray (i.e. fold the canopy in half). Now fold the canopy in half again so that it fits into the container.

  3. You can use a longer bridle if you attach it to the center ring and route it from one side to the other then back through the center ring.
  4. Now that you explained it, it does make sence. I guess the key would be to take wind drift into account when setting up to land instead of having to turn. Thanks
  5. When you land cross wind the wind will be hitting the side of your canopy pushing it towards the downwind direction. The higher the winds the more it will be pushing your canopy downwind. To stay on heading you will need to compensate by steering towards the upwind direction. Your canopy type and wing loading will also effect how much you need to compensate to stay on heading. If the wind is gusting you will need to be very careful not to inadvertently make a low turn because the wind suddenly changed. When you flare you will need to pull down the toggles the same distance from where they were. So if you have the upwind toggle half way down to your flare point to compensate for the wind then when flare you will need to pull the downwind toggle half way down and the upwind toggle to the full flare point. The more you compensate for the wind the less of a flare you will get so be ready to do a good PLF if needed. With a Mojo280 (F-111) loaded at 0.8 in about a 15 mph wind I would probably need to hold the upwind toggle close to my full flare point in order to maintain my heading. On a Lightning 176 loaded 1.35 in a 15mph wind I would guess that I would only need to hold the upwind toggle at about the half brakes point.

    BASE CRW jumps

Keith Thivierge is the person I heard this from. He does video at CPI and is on the U.S. 8-way CRW team. URL for CPI http://www.skydivect.com/

    BASE CRW jumps

I talked to Mike Lewis about BASE CRW at the CRW World Record Camp. I seem to remember that he said that he did a 2-stack at bridge day in the early or mid 80's. I've heard that a 3-stack was done at bridge day in the mid to late 90's. I did a 2-stack at this past bridge day with Kurt Kerry (sp?).
  8. Doing a 2-stack (CRW) on a B.A.S.E. jump at Bridge Day 2003.
  9. I'm a Software Engineer, the other BASE jumpers in my area are: a Union Iron Worker a Machinist a Postal Worker in a mail sorting plant a Foreman for a concrete contractor
  10. I'll be in Twin Falls 4/1-4/3 and in Moab 4/4-4/5 with three other jumpers. Is anyone else planning on jumping during those days at Twin Falls or Moab? Craig Nadler
  11. The 70 way completed on the 3rd attempt today.

    Bridge day 2003!

I just tallked to him, he said he's fine and didn't need any stitches.
  13. If you want to jump at a DZ with two Super Otters
  14. If you look at his profile it says he lives in Botswana (in Africa), TSOs are strictly an American thing.
  15. All the instances I'm aware of where rapid links have failed were with #3 1/2 links (rated for 220 lbs.) on mini risers. Has anyone seen a #5 link (rated for 620 lbs.) fail?
  16. I have around 400 jumps on a Triathlon 160 and 190 over about 7 years. If you're looking for a used canopy that's reliable but very inexpressive it would be a great choice. The resale value of Triathlons seem to be very low these days so wouldn't buy a new one. I was able to buy a Triathlon 190 with 300 jumps on it for $500 about a year ago. I see you jump at Sky's the Limit, please tell Shay I said hi. Craig Nadler
  17. Thanks for the video you made of our jumps, it was fantastic. Next time I head out to Twin Falls I'll let you know. Are you or any of the other people that were there going to Bridge Day? The group I was with is planning another trip to Norway in June. I'll post the details around March when we decide on the dates.
  18. Eduardo Guillen jumps his Lightning 143 (all ZP) with a solid slider and packed in a D-bag for RW jumps. He said the opens are brisk but tolerable. He also said you need to be careful with how you pack a ZP Lightning for terminal openings. He claims side packing works a lot better for this than propacking.
  19. It depends on the canopy. With a normal propack my (all F-111) Mojo280 with a sail/solid slider will open in about 300' at terminal. With the same general type of pack job and slider my Triathlon 190 (all ZeroP) would take about 500' to open. I'm not sure exactly how fast my Lightning 176 (all ZeroP) would take to open at terminal with a sail/solid slider but I would guess it's around 250'-300'.
  20. I'll be there with a group of eight people on the 20th and 21th.
  21. I also jump a Triathlon 190 (WL 1.25) however it opens in around 500feet . It would be easier to help you if you answered a few questions: What is your wing loading on that canopy? How many jumps are on the canopy? How many jumps are on the line set? What size pilot chute are you using? How many jumps are on the pilot chute? If the canopy is snively then you could propack it and roll the tail to either side the nose which will leave the nose of the canopy sticking out of the pack job. This is an easy way to speed up an opening. You should also check if the pilot chute is undersized or worn. I propack my BASE canopy and have no problem adjusting the opening speed to what is need on different types of BASE jumps.
  22. You should be able to find aerial photos of most DZs in the US at http://terraserver-usa.com/.
  23. I bought a dytter used 5 years ago for $50. Today I would say $50 would still be a reasonable deal but I wouldn't pay anymore than that.
  24. At many DZs there are no alternate landing areas you can get to if you're at 500feet (or even 1500 feet in some cases) when this happens. I've seen a number of cases where the second guy landed 5 seconds after the first one but the second guy was the lowest jumper until about 10 seconds before they landed. Having the first person down set the landing direction may work at some DZs or on some loads. However for it to work there needs to be someone who's clearly going to be landing first that's flying a predicable landing pattern or the DZ is in a wide open area with lots of easy outs
  25. What if you're following lowest jumper then someone else does a hook turn and lands before them in a different direction then you're setup for. If I'm jumping at a busy DZ and alternate landing areas are available I'll use them. When I've gone to the WFFC I stay well away from the main landing area near the loading tents, it's just not worth the risk landing in that zoo. Unfortunately not all DZ are luckily enough to have good alternate landing areas.
