How soon is too soon to start freeflying?

How soon is too soon to start freeflying? Before you let go of the aircraft! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
I didn't say that. I was merely stating that you should chose your battles wisely. If it is going to put you in the poor house and make the dropzone a miserable place to be because it is surrounded by a bunch of Mcnasty's.. is it a wise battle? You should stand your ground of course, but only a fool would fight an obvious losing battle. According to the next post, this jumper doesn't feel like it is going to be a losing battle. Even better. To the OP.. I wouldn't trust the guy if I was a different dzo, but we all have agendas. Perhaps the situation benefits the other dz. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

So this is a bunch of crazy rich people who don't want a dz near their houses and this is the only way they can go about it.... Good luck, you'll be fighting them forever. Is it going to be worth it in the long run to stay at a place you are despised? What is the endgame here? The dz will run out of money first I imagine. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Yeah.. the cutouts in the tube.. They should have weighted the guy feet down or head down. The conversation in the movie took place across the sky from each other, so that was pretty much busted by the two being face to face and not hearing each other. I could totally be wrong about the catchup jump. Perhaps the guy caught up and was flying relative to the tandem when they opened. The way it was cut though, it was made to look like he passed him just in time for opening. It looks like he flips to belly just as the tandem opens. The camera from the catchup diver show him opening very soon after going to belly, which would lead me to believe that he was in a pretty much headdown attitude while the tandem was opening. I'm sure it was safer than what I perceive.. just something that caught my eye.. that's all. When I first started flying camera, there was more than once that I noticed on film that someone passed my canopy in freefall. Someone from another group. I would have never noticed had I not had the camera. Didn't make me feel safe. Was a cool episode though. Now they should bust the myth that if anything goes wrong in skydiving you're dead. Throw out a couple of intentional mals. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Is there anything you aren't an expert on Mark? Looked to me like the guy went screaming past the tandem as it deployed. Less than 50 ft away. You don't fuck with tandems like that. Especially ones with whuffos on the front. That being said, my perception could be wrong... perhaps he was flying relative and fell away as they were deploying. I think you are wrong about a 100 way being less dangerous than Travis Pastrana's jump... it was a joke imo. Anyone fresh off AFF could do that with the guys that he had around him. Not the case with all the chuteless jumps done. But his was not all that impressive... just ballsy. Only one person in any (albeit minimal) danger there. And by headdown, I meant that the diver was generally pointing towards the earth with his head.. that's all. Call it what you want. Just please try to refrain from posting in every other fucking thread talking to everybody like they are all a bunch of whuffos and you are the next James Bond. Check yourself. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Throw weights on your ankles and run up and down some stairs while carrying a heavy box. That'll increase your leg awareness! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

ummm... ok. Every skydive should start with a plan. Stunt or not. Take Travis Pastrana's chuteless jump for example. Stunt. Well planned, well executed, fairly safe. Ballsy yes, but not exactly the top of the crazy meter. This however. A headdown flyer passing a tandem canopy while it is opening, imo is not a very well executed, very thought out stunt. The purpose of the jump could be classified as a "stunt" as in that it was performed for the entertainment of an audience yes. But something I personally believe to be more dangerous than Travis' chuteless jump was not exactly the core purpose of the skydive. I find it hard to believe that the plan from the get go was to pass the canopy in freefall. I also doubt that the passenger was fully aware of the added danger that the "stunt" added to his skydive. Just my opinion that the headdown jumper should have broke off well before he did. It could have been done alot safer. imo "stunts" are no different than any other skydive that begins and ends with a plan except they use fancier cameras and have a larger audience. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

I know this is an OLD thread, and I know that this episode of Mythbusters is OLD. But I just saw it for the first time. Anyone think it's a little crazy that headdown dude passes the tandem in freefall while it is opening? Camera usually adds distance, so it couldn't have been that far. I'm sure the guy is good... but was that the plan? And if it was, was it a very smart plan? -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson

When all is said and done and you have your tandem rating... Find the guy that stole your car. Take him for a tandem and then choppem! Make sure you give him the finger as he falls away too! I'm pretty sure if you start a logboook where you are at now, that'd be good enough for your IE. explain what happened and have him or her call you DZO to confirm that you aren't a stupid stinkin liar. If you are thinking about going for the rating at 500 jumps, they will be able to tell you have a touch more than the 200 jumps you have logged just by your performance in the air. If not, call them a dink and find another TIE! :) Next time you are in Montreal, park your car backwards. Those Frenchies will be putting the slim jim in the wrong end of the door and they'll never figure it out. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

"Retiring" from the sport - Farewell and Thank You
packerboy replied to chrismgtis's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A few years ago I made the same decision for almost all the exact same reasons. I didn't start selling me gear off untill just recently though. It is tough for a little while, but once you find yourself busy with other stuff that you love. (ie. playing with your son), you will quickly begin to learn that skydiving is not something you gave up rather it is something else you have done that has made you the man that you are. You aren't quitting something, just moving on to things that are more important right now. It took a season for me to shake the urge that I just want to get out there, but then I almost completely let it go and have never looked back. (Untill I started selling my gear and go hooked on this stupid website again ;). Once in a while you will be driving around and look up that blue sky and see those puffy white clouds and realize something. You at least have memories of being up there while all those around you have absolutely no clue. That puts you WAY ahead of most when it comes to understanding what this life and this planet has to offer. If you take that forward with you and allow skydiving to shift your paradigm of life, it will continue to bring you great things on the ground for years to come. Is jumping without a parachute safe?
packerboy replied to Ripley10001's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Anyone with over 200 jumps actually think this would be difficult? I mean there would have to be some planning involved and you would have to get some decent jumpers. The better the skydivers with you the higher the cushion for error. But shit, I had better looking skydives on my freefall program than Travis' jump. (Course I was wearing a shirt) It does take a critical combination of balls and stupidity. Anyone would be nervous, but it's a pretty simple jump. Just like the 500 way is only going to be a one point skydive right ;) (I'm kidding about that one) I'd like to see a 100 way with only A licence jumpers. now THAT would be impressive! -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -
What Can We Do About Skyride II

I apologize sir. I looked at your profile, and at first glance it looks like you are the sales manager at ASC because the ASC website link is right after your occupation. Kind of an optical delusion. You are welcome for the jump money, and since you gave it right back to ASC, you can tell whats his nuts that he is welcome for another can of gold flaked yacht polish. It's on me. It'll be worthless when that shitcan sinks. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

Wow, you are the guy that they are going to chuck under the bus when things get really hot. Sucks to be you. Well not now, but later it will. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson -

I've done that zip line near Jaco.. actually the leather gloves (although ExtREmeLY smelly) work just fine as a braking system if you aren't an idiot. Just a gentle tug on the wire and you come to a complete stop. I smell a Lutz. Worst case I had seen was that people were stopping too early and some had to zip out and get them and pull them in. I'm surprised however that he wasn't dumb enough to put his hand in front of the mechanism and run it through the gears. That part may be a little dangerous, but not being able to stop...... MORON. -------------------------------------------------- In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. ~ Thomas Jefferson
