Physics Help - Why do weights help you fall faster?
turnlow replied to turnlow's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thanks for the responses. I was looking for the specific formulas behind the logic and the answer now seems clear. _________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. -
Physics Help - Why do weights help you fall faster?
turnlow replied to turnlow's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
OK, I have had this conversation with a whuffo again without a satisfactory conclusion. Physics stars, please help. What is the scientific explanation as to why wearing weights enables a jumps to fall fater? If I recall 8th grade physics correctly, objects should fall at the same rate, assuming equal resistence, regardless of weight. So how does adding weight help skydivers fall faster? _________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. -
I have a business trip to London next week and am thinking about making a jump or two while I'm there. So three questions: 1) would the weather likely cooperate; 2) what is the nearest/best dropzone; and 3) how do you get to that dropzone. Thanks for your input. Be jealous all of you DZ.com folks - I am both jumping and drinking with skybabe this weekend to celebrate her b-day. And before you ask, she is in fact a babe. __________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Actually, I think that Bill makes an extremely valid point here about reliance on AADs. This is not a new concept nor one restricted to skydiving - in economics it's called Moral Hazard. Definitionally it means that people with insurance may take greater risks than they would do without it because they know they are protected. In reference to skydiving, it means that people will do riskier things with an AAD that they would not otherwise. Bill's point about jumping with one, but act like you don't have an AAD is a good point. Personally, I don't see the logic in jumping without an AAD. I think of it akin people who did not like airbags or antilock brakes. While there is a small minority of people whose having an airbag is a bad idea, for that vast majority of people it saved lives. I would not object to regulating the use of AADs nationwide (although I would not initiate or lead it). I have had a Cypress fire. Although I beat it with my reserve pull, I was glad to see that it would have saved my life if I had failed. I have also had someone that I jumped and worked with go in when he was knocked out and his Cypress was turned off. _________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

How about the words of one of our lesser known Presidents - Coolidge: Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and Determination alone are omnipotent. __________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

I don't do a psycho pack, but I do roll my canopy instead of s-folding it. Generally it enables me to get the canopy in the bag a bit faster and easier. _________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

One swoop seminar equals six to twelve months rehab.

Was this the dz.com regular who posted about buying a 135 recently - and many of us told him not to? Just wondering... __________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. -
It's not improper grammar to split infinitives and it never has been. __________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

OK, had a fun one this weekend. We were on an 8-way RW jump and left the aircraft first, followed by a low time freeflyer (about 35 jumps). Around 10,000 feet the freeflyer passed less than 10 yards off and 15 yards below our formation traveling at near tracking speed. It was a bit disturbing - particularly given the fact the he told me he was going to pull around 4,500 feet. I had a chat with him when he landed about the dangers of that particular situation. His first comment was that he "waited 4 seconds after we left before jumping." I tried to impart to him 2 main points: 1) Exit separation is about horizontal separation, not elapsed time between groups - you must look, 2) You must not track or freefly back along jump run - in most cases, you must be perpendicular to jump run. Anything I missed? Comments? __________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

562 : 2 Two chops within 17 jumps of each other, lesson learned - pull stable on Stilettos. No chops for the last 300 jumps. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. -
Can't tell you why I'm bothering to post again, but the particulars from the recent fatality at CSS look similar to your situation. Look here: http://www.hookturn.com/ He loved to hook turn, had some questionable recent landing and downsized two canopy sizes to a more aggressive canopy. In my opinion, this is the exact reason for the existance of these forums - learn from this guy's very sad and unecessary death. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a canopy nazi by any stretch of the imagination. But, there is a very fine line between aggressively downsizing and foolhardiness. _________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Not to be a Canopy Nazi, but in my opinion, that is a bit too aggressive of a jump. You are going from 1.25 to 1.6 and to a higher performance design in one fell swoop. It sounds like you have a reasonable grasp of canopy piloting - enough to know that 35 square feet and a higher performace canopy is a substantial jump. Get a 150 and learn to fly tha to it's limits before you get that 135. You have your entire life to jump smaller and smaller canopies - if you downsize smartly. Well, for the two friends I started jumping with, one broke his arm and did not return after 6 months of rehab (and a lot of pressure from his g/f to quit). The other cracked a vertibrae and had some other damage and hasn't returned in a while. As for me, i had a mandatory 6 months off from shoulder surgery and couldn't wait to get back in the air. Although do wish those two would return to the sky as well. While the jumping out of planes is beautiful, it's always better when shared with close friends. _________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Be careful brother! I don't know what you're loading your current canopy at, but going from a 170 to a 135 is a pretty big jump - especially at 335 jumps. You are right in the danger zone, 200 - 500 jumps, when many jumpers hurt themselves badly. Consider an interim step, maybe a 150 for a while. I will tell you from experience that a Stiletto 135 is much more sensitive to toggle input and and much less forgiving than a 170. Well, at least I will not attempt any hook turns tomorrow. It will be pull high and hope the spinletto does right by me. _______________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Tomorrow I'll make my first jump in almost 7 months. Yahoo!!! One month of bad weather followed by recovery from a shoulder injury and surgery. The Dr. just cleared me to go - I can hardly concentrate on work I'm so excited. _________________________________________________ It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
