  1. If you havent done any serious climbing before. Going out to the local climbing gym and getting yourself up some routes will reap far more benefits than any strength specific exercises. When I was climbing alot the hardest I could climb was 5.11a and V3 but I could do more pullups than several of my friends who are solid 5.12 climbers. For a beginner, climbing specific technique training (traverses, easy routes) should make up your entire "workout" schedule. Stay off the hangboards, campusboards, weights etc. until you are cruising 5.10a. BTW I noticed you live in Vista. I live in Vista too. I havent done any serious climbing in about a year or so but Ive got tons of gear and wanted to start climbing again. Shoot me an e-mail if you wanna pull on some rock sometime theres all kinds of fun routes within a 1/2 hour drive from where we live!
  2. Ive been jumping this the last couple weeks. I got it on ebay for ~$430 and had the rigger inspect main, container and repack reserve, add BOC. Also purchased new cutaway pillow and reserve ripcord and a newer style vector pilot chute for the reserve. Total came to $340 so I basically got a complete rig for a little under $800. The canopies and rig are in great shape for being so old and Im having an awsome time jumping it. The velcro is in good condition but Im wary of freeflying it until I can at least get a tuck tab for the closing pin flap. The only gripe I have is that I was told by the rigger that there is no room in the reserve portion of the container to fit the cypress module. But other than that Im totally happy with it!

  4. I started skydiving in april due to an intrest in BASE through climbing also. What did it for me was that part in the Masters of Stone 5 video when they show the two guys jumping the Polar Sun Spire on Baffin Island. Since I have 54 skydives so far and havent done any climbing outside of the occasional gym and light bouldering session since then... so little time so much to do
  5. I might be able to make it this saturday who do I talk to when I get to the DZ?
  6. Nothing like lifting Heinekins and couch surfing to get yer ass in shape
  7. Are there any newbies jumping on the weekdays? If there is enough intrest would any coaches be available then?
  8. I am very intrested in learning CRW are their any places to learn or coaches in the Southern California area? I noticed that there is a link on Perris' website but it has been "under construction" for quite some time.
  9. Thanks for the advice so far. Im sure it has enough speed to execute a proper flare. One of my landings was downwind and still not much of a flare. Im going to try flaring higher to see how that works and I saw a thread on rec.skydiving talking about adding an additional brake line attachment point to an inboard cell. I had the entire rig and canopy checked out by a master rigger before jumping it.
  10. could you please elaborate on how the flare is differant?
  11. i weigh 170lbs so about 190 out the door. I tried the blow air through the canopy test when I first got it and no air went through. less than 100 jumps are reported on the canopy and from a visual inspection it appears true. I tried to flare it like the rental canopies that I have experience with (sabre170, triathalons etc). Wont burying both toggles at around 20ft cause the canopy to stall?
  12. I recently purchased my first rig with a Cruislite 220 main. Jumped it for the first time today and upon landed discovered that it didnt flare much at all resulting in a minor crash. I did several test flares in the air and those seemed ok. As far as my newbie eyes can tell the canopy is in really good condition definately better than many of the rental rigs. Is it possible to get the porosity tested to see if maybe this cruiselite has reached its retirement?
  13. I know that you should always try to land against the wind but if you are forced into a situation where you must land with the wind at your back: Should you flare like you would in a "normal" landing? or should you compensate somehow for the additional forward speed? Im asing this because today I had to land going downwind and the two things I noticed was much greater forward speed and when I went to flare it was virtually ineffective. The flare I used started when my feet were about 8-10ft off the ground and was one smooth motion from no brakes to full brakes. Also is a PLF the best emergency landing method even in a situation where you have a high rate of forward speed and vertical speed upon landing?
  14. You could probably take it to a machine shop and have it magnifluxed to check for cracks
  15. Thanks for all the great replys! The seller said that the rig was set up as a single point system for cutting away and deploying the reserve. Can the rig be converted to the standard right side cutaway left side reserve deployment setup?

  17. like Skin said I only got this rig to get skydive experience with before taking a FJC for BASE
  18. Took the advice of some folks on this forum and got a skydive rig on E-bay. Will make sure to have it checked out by a rigger before jumping it. here is a link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3625882698&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOAB:US:6
  19. If you take it back far enough everyone who is a citizen of the USA is an African-American
  20. Thanks for all the advice! I definately do plan on eventually getting skydiving gear but I dont have very much disposable income and more credit purchases are not an option. To clarify my earlier post I was wondering what would be the most cost efficient method to get into BASE while still maintaining safety as a priority.
  21. I started skydiving in march and currently have 51 jumps. Since the very beginning I have wanted to get into BASE jumping it is what attracted me to skydiving in the first place. I am wondering if I should drop a few grand on a skydiving rig or keep on paying the rental fee until I have my 150 skydives and can sign up for a FJC? I need 99 more jumps it breaks down like this: with my own rig 99 jumps: ~$3000 rig + $18*99=$4782 without my own rig 99 jumps: $40 * 99 = $3960
  22. when coming in for the final approach and time to flare is it better to look down at the ground to calculate elevation or look towards the horizon?
