Not sure my memory is that good. If it was our 16 man team, then we may have done that though I seem to remember forming the diamond and then breaking into 4 4-man diamonds and then tracking those off for a distance before breaking off for deployment. Note: I was 16th in the first ever 16 man diamond in Deland in '74. ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

Ok, I have some more info on the releases you mentioned from Jim Hooper: I made a lot of jumps with Lou the summer of '75 and he pulled low a lot. Many of his friends including me talked to him about it, but he was convinced he could handle it... ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

Well, I was the DZ rigger at the time and I've never heard that story about Lou. First, he was from Illinois, not Michigan (Sabrina was from Michigan). Lou, who was a habitial low puller, had a high speed mal which he cut away somewhere under 1000'. The top of his reserve was just starting to inflate on impact. Sabrina had some sort of mal on her main and cutaway and was UNABLE to pull her reserve. I put the fish scale on the rig and buried it (over 90lbs). Didn't matter, 2000lbs would not have been any better. The housing was attached in such a way on the early SST rigs, that a very short person like her would have a total every time. The pin had to make a 90 degree turn into the housing. We reported this to the builder and they changed how the housing was routed/attached to solve this issue. Too late for Sabrina... I always knew Lou would go in one day, still sad when it finally happened ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

I was at/in the meet on the Ten High Bunch as well as the Deland 16 and 20 man teams. Hell, I don't even remember the name of the 16 and 20 man teams and we won both events! Don't remember that team name either, but there are a few other lurkers of this forum that have been around long enough. Not too long ago, someone had the names of the top 10 man teams from that meet from the magazine. Have to look through a few threads to find that post though. It as a sad meet for me as I knew both Lou and Sabrina who went in 40 minutes apart... ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

I have to agree with you there. It was a more natural throw. Considering the slightly longer velcroed bridle, it did leave a little more bridle to blow up between your arm and body. Not often, but it did happen. You just rotated out of it. On the upside, if you survived the belly band, a belly band forced you (well, not forced. you only had to wrap your hand a few times to decide it was the smart thing to do) to learn how to rotate slightly to your left side and twist your wrist to avoid a pilot chute in tow off your hand. This technique also cleared the burble on your back as well. When I switched to a ROL, I used the same left leaning knuckles forward outward twisting throw. The advantage, like a deploying a belly band, was that you could watch your pilot chute go to bridle stretch as you rotated back face to earth. The only hand wrap I ever had was a very, very lazy throw that took me until 1400 ft to clear from 2.5 Since I don't yet do head down. My only complaint about the BOC is that it takes longer to deploy. However, with today's slow opening canopies and higher pullers, it's not usually a problem. On the other hand, a low pull scare usually has the jumper doing the muscle memory pull. I figure it's about 70~100 feet slower than a leg strap memory muscle pull. Oh, remember Look, Reach, Pull? It's now Reach, Feel Around, Pull. A forward or rear leg strap and a belly band were (are) a single smooth motion at pull time even with a wrist twist. A BOC is a 2 motion pull like the old Racer pull out. But, I have to admit, a BOC probably has less hand wrap potential than the others. Any thoughts? When we came up with the hand-deploy pilot chute, nearly all the custom piggyback rigs of the time had belly bands, Wonderhog included. We already had a single closure point with a bight of the bridle since the Wonderhog had an external pilot chute at the time. The belly band just seemed like a natural place to put the pouch and without altering the rig, was the only place with enough room. I never had any problem with the bridle on my arm, but I can tell you as the first to jump a hand-deploy, the hardest part was letting go of the handle after extension Booth moved from the belly band location after a couple of twisted belly band PIT events. After leaving Booth's shop, I went to work for Buchmann and on his rig, we put the pouch on the attachment webbing from the container to the harness. Even though the orientation looked as though it would be a pull forward and then out, it seemed to be just out when you actually jumped it. Haven't jumped a BOC, but I'm sure I'll have to think about it when the time comes... ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

SCR datbase updated to include SCR # 1 to 10050, still a gap from there to the 14000s. SCS updates coming... Current text at top of database page has the numbers: ===================== The SCR's are entered from 1 to 10050 - gap - and 14300 to current at 14780. The SCS's are entered from 1 to 2001 - gap - and 7900 to current at 8243. The databases of all other Star Crest awards are current and complete. We're working to close the gaps on the SCR & SCS awards. Thanks for your patience. ===================== Enjoy! ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

That's a great story! I really liked Fog as well, seems like he was pretty easy going with most. Steve, thanks for the clarification. I know you have some emotions about Fog and the "situation" he was in (or helped into)... ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

I think you have it right now. Helen Tyson, then Fraser, and finally (I'm pretty sure) Fournier, Fog is what we called him. He has since passed away from a heart attack I believe. Don't know what Helen is up to, but certainly one of my favorite ladies of skydiving! ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

Hi Pat, so good to see you posting in here! Yes, you were certainly the style and accuracy type. I can still hear manifest calling Ski, Ski, Moore and Moore over the loud speaker

Hi Hoop, I agree with most here, don't go. If you leave here, nothing will change anyway in terms of moderating the site. What will happen is that all of us will be deprived of your knowledge, wisdom, and memories of skydiving. Your posts here (and recent articles in the magazine) have been very well received. This is really the only place most of us have to share stories and opinions on "what was" and "what is" in the skydiving world. While you might satisfy some personal point for yourself, the way this site is run will not be affected (IMO). Anyway, if you're counting votes, mine is for you to stay with us. Your friend always, Roger ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

Bill is nearly finished with the SCR spreadsheets and I will be loading those to the database sometime this week. He will then work on the missing SCS numbers, so you will be out there soon

Jerry, I have to confess that as I was reading your story, I was thinking to myself "I think it has to be a round star dude..." But the awards page describes it as "formation" only, so your in I can't say I remember my SCR dive that well, but I remember my SCS dive like it was yesterday. I was on vacation and just visiting a small DZ in Woodbine Maryland. I had my SCR, had been in several 16 and 20 man stars, but didn't have an SCS (not sure if I was ever later than 7th in those). Well, when they saw my XX patch on my poptop, they asked me to organize their 2 plane attempt at their first ever 8 man over Woodbine. I agreed to go on the dive and review the plan, but didn't want to organize the thing. The plan looked good anyway and I went 8th (4th from the 206 with the first 4 in a 182). We completed the star at about 7500 feet and had a great scream fest down to break-off. No in-air photographers, but several shots taken from the ground, one of which wound up on the wall of the local bar/skydiver hangout. Never had so much fun! ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

If my memory is correct I earned it at Cal City a long time ago. Yeah ive been to Zhills and Hinckley A quick look in the database does not find you. I would contact Bill (go to the site and click on Contact. His email link is on that page. He's pretty good at finding the awards if he has something to go on... If he comes up with it, I can insert the record pretty quickly. ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

I think not very long. When I started doing the database work for it, I asked Bill about getting a new set of SCR and SCS certificates since I had long lost mine. I had them in about three days. Getting posted to the database probably takes longer as he enters them in a spreadsheet until he has enough to have me bulk insert them in the tables. ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

Boy that sounds familiar, have we jumped with one another? You ever get down to Z-Hills in the 70's or Hinkley? Where did you get your NCSR (city)? ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

Your welcome. The real efforts are Bill's of course, still holding this stuff together after all these years. I just do the database stuff for him to give back a little. I still remember getting my SCR and SCS and was thrilled both times! ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

From the top of the database page: The SCR's are entered from 1 to 8000 - gap - and 14300 to current at 14780. The SCS's are entered from 1 to 2001 - gap - and 7900 to current at 8243. You are in the gaps for both SCR and SCS. Not sure about the NSCR, what is your real name? Bill is now working pretty hard at filling the remaining gaps. I just added a good chunk and he has around 500 more about ready. He had a couple of volunteers for a while, but is now on his own as far as I can tell. ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

Hi everyone, the SCR database has been updated with SCR's 7514 to 8000. Bill is working hard on filling the remaining gaps in the SCR and SCS tables. Each time he gets another 500 or so entries completed, he sends them to me and I insert them into the database. 8001 to 8500 should be done by the end of this weekend with more to come. The url is: http://www.scr-awards.com/index.html Enjoy! And... if you don't have any of these awards, get out and get one (or all)! ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519

A sad loss. I was going to his brother Robert for chiropractic at the time. Before he moved out to the Island, he spent quite a bit of time jumping at Z-Hills and while I was there at least, had quite long hair. It was interesting to me seeing him with short hair in those photos; something of a contrast to my minds picture of him all these years. I remember him adjusting more than one aching jumper's back and that's how I found out his brother was a licensed Chiropractor (probably retired by now). I'm pretty sure it was Bill I lined up behind one day in the C47 and took a step back 'cause he had a patch sewn on his reserve flap that said "WARNING - EXPLOSIVE CUTTERS INSTALLED." That will make you think for a second ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519 -
