Advice on buying a rig for a newbie
trumpetfish replied to Brian425's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
ahh, now i can't believe you'd disrespect SIR clive like that. Are you forgetting about the ZX80!!??? or how about Jet Set Willy, or Daley Thompson Decathalon (many a finger strain there) you know there's a rumour that he wanted to cross a C5 with a FIBREGLASS RELIANT ROBIN. god help us all. Even though he was president of mensa for ages he was still crappy at marketing totally off subject i know but hey. -
posting this here as it doesn't seem serious enough to put into incidents but i would appreciate anyone else's take or if they have had a similar experience themselves.. First unpleasant skydiving experience. 10th jump on new main. EXE 170. Loaded 1:1. Wearing Helmet. Un-eventful freefall. Controlled landing approach, on target and heading into a steady 5-8 knot wind at approx 200ft. At perhaps 120ft very gusty wind/turbulence, lost 3 cells from the left hand side of my canopy, turned me crosswind, gave the left brakes a little input in an attempt to rectify the partially collapsed canopy (was this wrong thing to do??). Canopy sorted. Still looking up at the canopy when I hit the ground with no brakes. No plf. Result: concussion, strained back, bruised nose, chipped teeth. Feeling very stupid. Obviously I realise this would have been avoided if I had been doing what I was supposed to be doing, looking at my landing spot rather than anywhere else. I think I was so shocked by my canopy problem I lost awareness and must have lost altitude faster than I expected; I thought I had more time before I would be needing to flare. I remember thinking ‘ok, I have enough time to quickly try to correct this, look back to my landing spot and flare’. I got as far as the starting to look back bit. When I arrived at the DZ I judged the wind conditions to be within my capability as I’d landed in higher winds previously. I watched a few landings and no one seemed to be having problems. I did however fail to properly register any significance of the wind being from a northerly direction rather than the more usual southeasterly. I knew the wind direction was different but didn’t think it would change anything but my landing pattern. After my rough landing I talked to an instructor/rigger who works full time and they stated that they never jump when the winds are from a northerly direction as there is strange turbulence as the wind comes over the clubhouse buildings. Shit. Apparently I wasn’t the only person to have a rough landing, including some much more experienced jumpers. After the event I feel very lucky not to have sustained worse injuries. In future I will certainly be taking more time before jumping to properly note anything out of the ordinary concerning conditions. And a canopy control lesson sounds like a good idea – what to do when experiencing problems with a canopy at low altitude? I imagine it’s a case of sit there and ride it out. Must admit, the incident has scared me a bit, looking up at that altitude and seeing my canopy not fully inflated was a horrible sensation. thoughts, comments, solutions, criticisms?

Where to buy skydiving videos? And NTSC & PAL?
trumpetfish replied to bigfritz's topic in Photography and Video
just my 2 pennies worth but I was going to buy 'pack like a pro' as im just learning packing too, my dz shop advised not to bother as it's pretty difficult to follow it while your packing. stopping the video again and again etc. far better to just spend a couple of days with your rigger showing you the ropes i think. get tips from them you probably won't get from a video, you can buy him/her beer with the dollars you saved!? J -
hi all I'm looking for a song featured on Chronicles 3. It comes in just before 'Summertime' by Sublime & Pharside (which is v.cool too) and starts with a lyric ' me and my girl, we got a relationship...' . it might be a remix of 'summertime' or more likely it's mixed in really well. bit vague i know, but love it big time. anyone know what it is ?? ta.

Oh, the nerve of some skydivers!!
trumpetfish replied to dreamsville's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
As a low time jumper this issue of seperation time and exit order I find quite worrying. (particularly after reading this thread - there seems to be quite a bit of confusion?) To someone who is new to the sport, there seem to be a lot of factors involved in 'calculating' the exit order and timings. so sometimes we can't help but put trust in the more expereinced jumpers on a load. Spotting is part of the USPA A card but I think there should be more emphasis put on this stuff. i was shown the principles of spotting and about leaving 'at least' 5 secs between groups, but never touched on different skydive disciplines and how it affects exit order etc.. -
only put 5 or so jumps on mine but from everything ive read and the limited experience of mine, I'm well happy with it. Seems like a great rig at a great price. If there was one complaint it would be that my rig sits on the top of my bum a little bit, but I bought it second hand so just have to put up with that for the time being, no biggie really.

New Soul Flyers video is incredible!!
trumpetfish replied to usskydiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Got it from dzsports at Hinton DZ. contact through www.dzsports.co.uk probably have to email them as i doubt it's up on the website. I may have got the name a bit wrong, it's either 'into the blue' or 'out of the blue' - only got it the other day. -
It's official - skydiving is cool

can't believe 'seeing the world from space' is only no 28. no question that would be my number one. -
New Soul Flyers video is incredible!!
trumpetfish replied to usskydiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
oh my god. that wingsuit clip is astounding!! Just bought 'out of the blue' DVD. mostly the Go Fast team doing unbelievable canopy stuff, riding the ridges of the eiger (i think) and landing on mon blanc. 46sq ft canopy project - hankercheif!. some knarly swooping wipe outs. edge of your seat stuff. only thing I don't like is the 'uber' trendy editing - bit annoying. it's only £20 in the UK, recommended. -
lol. oh man, that shit funny.

He's a shitty actor and an asshat. he, he... asshat. he, he. and well, maybe it's just me, but her arse is pretty huge man. don't get me wrong, no aversion to a well proportioned behind but everyone goes on and on and on about how great it is. well, in the UK they do anyway! screw celebrity.

look inside, try to identify the need in you that you are wanting to satisfy (that you think having a child will accomplish). then decide. alternatively, forget the idea and go skydiving.
-
know what you mean. my usual dz has been the same at weekends, very, very busy making tandems (their bread & butter I guess) and just getting the loads up. I just got a rig so am at that stage where i need to learn to pack. i'm sure there will be plenty of rainy days to come, urghh!, so I'll be up there then. packing, and re packing, and repacking!! easy.

Need some AFF encouragement
trumpetfish replied to SkyMadness's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
from a fellow newbie. it took me till level 3 before I could stop my brain from locking up when jumping. infact I messed up my level 4 because i was still overwhelmed. It WILL get easier! stick with it for the next level (or 2) and then see how you feel. also I think leaving a long period between jumps when your doing AFF is not the best idea, try and do a couple jumps in one day if you can - tends to build more confidence that way. and enjoy! -
convert. you won't look back.
-
dude, you have way too much time on your hands.
-
I know the bit you mean, and when he was jumping wall to wall, and must have been planning to just land on the wall of the next building rather than playing it 'safe' by overshooting onto the roof. serious precision.

that is just wrong. full stop.

On Uk TV last night was a programme on 'Free Running', a new discipline being practiced by a group of French guys. All I can say is WOW!!. A totally new thing to me. I saw it on a bbc advertisement last year where they had this guy leaving work for the day and running across rooftops to get home in time to see his favourite tv programme. it was the way he moved, very elegant, no wasted energy and the distances he was covering with his jumps were huge! On this programme last night one guy jumped from the top of HMS Belfast (mored in london) down to the gun turret. That's 2 full stories - no matt, no net, nothing, and ran away! Found this article on the subject and there's a link to their website. http://sport.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0%2C10488%2C1026383%2C00.html once this takes hold, I can see a lot of snappy ankle action going on in A&E in the not too distant future! As far as balls go, these guys have titanium ones. respec.[url]
