A tandem skydive is not a normal skydive. According to the rules you must either be an AFF instructor, a tandem instructor or have a min. 500 RW jumps and sorry freeflying doesn't count. I have had people with over a 1,000 jumps but never with a tandem go with me and they blew it. Personally it's up to the tandem instructor but, their first concern should always be torwards the safety of the passenger. Which doesn't mean you can't be on the load but, it is highly unlikely that you will get to tag along. "Captain the anti matter is mixing with the doesn't matter."

The only point that I was trying to bring out is that the USAFA free launches their students from the first jump. Not how or who they choose to do it. The idea is that with proper training it can be done. If the training takes 2-weeks to prep the students then that's what it takes.

You might want to check out the Airforce Academy's AM-490 class which puts students out on their first 5 skydives doing 10 second delays with no in air instructors or static line. They have been doing it for years with out a single fatality.

Nick Gaucher passed away
rustywardlow replied to rustywardlow's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nick Gaucher died of cancer at home surrounded by his family Tuesday April 19th at 9:05 am. Nick used all the runway in his short life and the skydiving activity was central in his memories at the end. Michael Martin ass't principal Wellington Jr. High I would like to thank DJan Stewart and all of the USPA board members in helping Nick's dream come true. Rusty -
But in the same vein having to do a tandem first can be very expensive if you decide to carry on. Not if you compare it to the amount of knowledge gained. In the long run say over 1,000 jumps the cost of a single tandem will not influence the total amount of money spent on skydiving. The saying "most of my money I spent on skydiving the rest I just wasted" holds true. The cost of a tandem skydive is about the same as a really good altimeter or other needed item. Skydiving is about passion. If your worried about how much your going to spend over the course of your skydiving life time you may find that skydiving is not for you. A tandem is a great way to start. After that first jump then you can decide if skydiving is right for you because make no doubt about it skydiving is a hugh commitment and is not for everyone. Embarassment at April 2005 Parachutist Cover
rustywardlow replied to anonymouscwrd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Sorry I just have a problem with narrow minded people. A mind is like a parachute it only works when open. "Captain the matter is mixing with the doesn't matter." -
If you want some real answeres contact Tony Dominiqo. Tony and his brother Tim were more than likely the first ones to attempt this back in the early 90's for a Mountain Dew commercial. As I recall they were some what successful at it.

I don't care what you think all jumps count. -
I always have a puff off of a cigarett also before going to the plane. It may sound strange but, you never know when it will be your last cigarett. "captain the matter is mixing with the doesn't matter."

Unless you did this on purpose then it would be fun to remember. Other wise it should of been a wake up call. With as few jumps as you have over two years you might want to rethink jumping that Stilleto 170 before you become a statistic. All skydivers are my friends and we should all look out for one another. "Captain the matter is mixing with the doesn't matter."

It doesn't matter what you do you still must stay within the manufacurs recamendations of the reserve. Any violation is wrong.

Would you do a tandem with your wife as a passenger ?
rustywardlow replied to vidiot's topic in Instructors
I took my wife on my 1,000 tandem and she hasn't shown up at the drop zone since. I guess it worked. "Captain the matter is mixing with the doesn't matter." -
One of the hardest facts to get through to new jumpers is sooner or later you are going to know somebody who died in this sport. Skydiving is a mind game and the only way you can play is if your mind is stronger than the game. Sometimes it is a good idea to take some time off and get your head straight For others its getting back on the horse. I can't tell you what to do just rember one thing complacency kills in this sport and if you can't answer the question"ARE YOU READY TO SKYDIVE?" with a resounding "HELL YES!" Then you might want to think about it.

Front and rear riser question
rustywardlow replied to lindell's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
At your exsperience level I would be very cautious about front riser input unless you are playing around up high. As for rear risers. Just get some rear riser loops sewn on the same as front riser loops. When it comes to a really long spot they come in very handy and can make the differance between making it back or landing out. -
Front and rear riser question
rustywardlow replied to lindell's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you don't know much about a Sabre then how can you talk about its landings. A Sabre 170 can come in very fast. It has alot to do with the pilot not the canopy. -
Newly rated AFFI - how long before you did a single JM AFF dive?
rustywardlow replied to altichick's topic in Instructors
Dear Sally Even though you have the skills girl and you showed what you had during the course. Be careful of over inflated egos. The crawl walk run method works just fine in real life as it did in the course. Learn the system, you didn't do wheelies your first day on a bicycle, but don't be surprised if you walk up to manifest and they tell you that your on a level IV. It was fun teaching you and I would not have suggested that you complete the coures if I didn't think you had it. -

STRONG vs SIGMA vs VECTOR vs ECLIPSE TANDEM RIGS
rustywardlow replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
What is drouge slam? Drouge slam can happen on any tandem rig if the kill line is not mantained properly. On the Vector's, Sigma's and the Eclipse as soon as you pull the drouge release handle the drouge collapses and the drag from the bridle and the collapsed drouge pull the bag out of the container. This is commonly refered to as the trap door and makes for a very smooth and soft transion from freefall to canopy deployment. With a Strong rig the drouge does not collapse until the canopy is out of the bag which results in drouge slam every time you pull the drouge release. Which is that sudden jerk that you feel until everything starts to slow down once the canopy is finally out of the bag. With the invention of the Super drouge this proplem has been virtualy elimintated. Hope this answers your questions. -
STRONG vs SIGMA vs VECTOR vs ECLIPSE TANDEM RIGS
rustywardlow replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
They ,who ever they are. say that if you start out on a Strong you will like a Strong and if you start out on a Vector you will like the Vector. I am rated in Strong, Vector, Sigma and Eclipse. Personally I can't stand the Strong it feels like your wearing a bale of hay instead of a skydiving rig and I hate getting Drouge slammed every time it opens plus it is poorly designed with a bunch of band-aid put in place to solve their proplems. The Vector is nice ( I own one ) but it can be slightly harder to put on and it is kind of stiff. The Eclipse is much easier to put on because the leg straps are longer and I do like the way the handles are stowed, but everyone knows that the Eclipse is a close copy to the Vector. Main preferance of course is the Sgma. It looks like a skydiving rig, you don't have to worry about drouge release handles coming unstowed and just by looking at it you can tell that a lot of time and thought went into it's design -
Tandem Instructor Poll: Instructor Helmets
rustywardlow replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
I always wear a hard helmet for myself and put a frap hat on my student. I have hit my head too many times in all kinds of aircraft ceilings, bars in the Otter or Caravan, doors on Cessna's and of course riser slap. The main reason I like a frap hat on my student is that they have a hard head and I've got a soft chin. -
Hear, Hear I whole heartedly agree that this is a cheesy product that lacks quality or concern for the safety of the tandem instructor or the student.Quote
