nose rolling on a tandem reserve? (sigma's)
linestretch replied to linestretch's topic in Gear and Rigging
nothing has changed. It's just different from the way most people pack, or pack reserves for that matter. my pics & stuff! -
I totally agree with Rob. If you are one of the guys who chucks the drogue RIGHT out the door, then you are probably one of the ones that has an issue about getting stable and the handy is probably not for you. my pics & stuff!

nose rolling on a tandem reserve? (sigma's)
linestretch replied to linestretch's topic in Gear and Rigging
without a doubt, that is an odd method of packing. I've only done a few, and each time, it strikes me as strange. I did have a terminal/drogueless opening on a strong, and it hurt pretty bad. my pics & stuff! -
nose rolling on a tandem reserve? (sigma's)
linestretch replied to linestretch's topic in Gear and Rigging
Outa curiousity, do any of you out there do this? It's in the vector manuel, and on the their packing VHS. It caught me off gaurd, since I had never heard of it, and have never done it. I called a rigger buddy, the guy that was maintaning the gear that I was working on and he agreed to rolling the nose. It still sounds sorta odd, but I wanted some input from others. BTW, it was a sigma tandem..... my pics & stuff! -
same here, but I used the knee plate and the bodkin. my pics & stuff!

prestretch it, and then match as close as you can to the one previously used. If you don't have that one, I would try and match the length (after it's in cypres disc and in the rig) to roughly the height of the bottom of the packing tray. Error on the long side. It can be a BITCH to get the knot out sometimes. Once you have the knot in, reef on the loop again to set the knot. It will move down the line some. From there, just pack away, and then adjust the length as you close it. good luck my pics & stuff!

I usually keep jumping until I blow blood from my nose.....but hey, that's me. my pics & stuff!

there are just way tooooo many factors as to how a parachute lands, to where you can't put hard numbers to it. Wing loading, the age of that canopy, material it's made out of, 7 cell, 9 cell, windy, not windy, down wind, in the wind, bla bla bla. It's a feel you aquire after jumping a peticular canopy over a period of time. Some people have it and land nicely right from the beginning. Some it seems like they will never get it, and land poorly on everyting they jump. Sticking with one canopy and learning that one is the best way to go instead of 4 or 5 landings on one, and saying "man, maybe I'll land this one better", and then do the same on that. Does this make sense?...or does it just make sense to me.. my pics & stuff!

What a pain in the ass huh. A guy I work with had the 300+way in PAL, and wanted it in NTSC. Another jumper here put it on his Sony VIO (whatever it's called) and then exported it back out as NTSC. It worked, but the quality was a little less than the original. And on the TV, there was slight border around the screen. Try this and see that you get. my pics & stuff!

and putting the make up on, with a cup of joe. For me, the thing that gets me the most worried is when I am taking a very pitite gal (like 80-100lbs) and the load is going to 8K. While I'm moving to the door, I'm saying in my head "MUST HAVE GOOD CLEAN EXIT!". (I'm talking about the ones with handycam) my pics & stuff!

I think you are sweating it too much. Not only do you have the pull force of the pilot chute while in freefall, but the rig is also on your back, generally tightened up, conforming to your body. Going out on a limb here, but I would be willing to bet that IF this was an issue with Javelins, that EVERYONE in the industry would know and talk about it.......like trying to land a slightly overloaded Dash-M. Make sense???? my pics & stuff!

I agree with you on this. Jump the helmet with out the box. my pics & stuff!

S&TA? That's pretty funny. We do ONLY tandems, and it's not a USPA sanctioned DZ. In fact, you can't really call it a DZ. It's a place where I work, and do tandems. My options are to do them, or leave. my pics & stuff!

I change them in the tandem rigs here. The rigs are getting on average 100+ jumps a month, so I've been changing them almost every pack cycle, or in between the next one. It's too bad, the rig I changed batteries on yesterday was still showing 6360 for the voltage, with over 500 jumps. The new one was lower than that. Go figure. my pics & stuff!

It's understandable why you guys think it's bad news. I still really don't know how I feel about it. If I had a choice, I wouldn't do them. But if I say no, then I'm back to oregon to do nothing but sit in the rain, and make no $$$. So for right now, I'm ok with it. When I do have handy, I put a lot more extra time into training the students about the exit. Yeah, it's the scarriest part. On the bright side, after doing 200+ handy's in 4 months, I'm pretty damn rock solid when I don't have handy. my pics & stuff!

Neither pics have the drogue deployed. I don't pitch it until I'm either stable, or have the "window" of opportunity. I don't toss it right out the door. As for handle checks, you can still do them. And as for me holding the camera in front on opening, yeah, my hand (mostly my upper arm) gets grabbed, but you just reach over with the other hand and start slapping or removing fingers. It's all in the training. And if they grab you, and you film it, then they get to see that they DID do it, because most don't remember anyway. I've also filmed 3 students with their hand completely around the reserve handle. That scares me the most. But I think good training, and then being heads up takes care of most of that. I guess the rest would be pure blind luck. my pics & stuff!

all very good points. My situation is a little different in that where I work isn't your typical DZ. We do ONLY tandems, and fun jumpers, or anyone else for that matter isn't welcome. We cater mainly to Japanese tourist. My commitment here is 6 months, and to stay here and work, handycam was part of the deal. The video is actually better than most of you think, at least the ones who have never seen it, or have only seen shitty video. And what about the student who just can't afford a full blown video? This is a cheaper alternative. Lets hope that in our "self policing", that we don't let this happen, or at least, voice out opinions when we see something like this happen. These stills were pulled off of a video. Now for those of you who have never seen it, what do you think? Just a note, I started doing video LONG before I did tandems, and I'm not a big advocate of handy. I just some of you to see the other side before making a judgement. my pics & stuff!

When did you go over 1.4 W/L??
linestretch replied to frankiebrina's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
about 1,000 jumps for me. As for b1jercat? he he he. That guy is a BIG friggin dude, and the canopies weren't big enough to keep him within that limit. my pics & stuff! -
I wasn't jumping back in the "day", but I can imagine when just tandems started coming out, I'm sure there were people saying "what the fu__? Why the hell would you want to strap someone to the front of you, when just jumping is scarry enough!?". I was basicaly forced into doing handy. I didn't like it at first, and still really don't. BUT, it's not all that bad. And as long as we don't let just any ass do it, I think life will be just fine for everyone. I agree, it DOES NOT even come close to outside video, but it is a nice alternative. Another big issue is "can handycam and outside video co-exist at the same DZ"? It didn't where I'm at. my pics & stuff!

wow, now that is scarry looking. But hey, whatever works for you. And Aggiedave, I understand you being freaked out by it. The cool thing is you DON'T have to do it. I don't think it's for just anyone. Time will tell if it's a good thing or bad. my pics & stuff! -

linestretch replied to tandemking's topic in Photography and Video
I totaly agree! That's my fear also. You can see it now with people buying a camera and a helmet and they have very little jumps, or they are just plain scarry as it is. There should definitely be some serious requirements for a TM to be able to do them. As for what we use here, we use the PC-9's, and they are inserted in the glove that goes on the left hand. The lens is a .3x, very wide angle, and low profile lens. If you have short arms, it sucks. You can't get as much in the vid. The tall guys with long ass arms have it made. We offer the video, and then pull stills off the video, and put them on a computer disc. my pics & stuff! -
Tandem person shooting their own video?

Too funny. I had a sidespin with handy, and man, it was friggin hairy! Filmed the student pretty much the whole time, and she thought it was part of the ride. Sorta amusing after the fact. At the time I started handy, I had roughly 600 tandems. Adding the handy put me right back at number one, it was rough. It's DEFINETELY not for everyone. I'm much more at ease doing them now. As for the footage, you have to remember that you have a .3x lens on the camera, and the zoom is useless. You can pretty much get the whole student in frame, and get ground shots, and the drogue, and the plane....obviously the better you get at it, the easier it is. Here are a few stills from the camera. I still agree that it is NOT as good as outside video. my pics & stuff! -
not sure about the crossport thing. For me, closed end cells usually means I had a very nice soft opening, and I like em that way. Now, if they won't inflate, or inflate, and then drop off again, then maybe I would be worried. my pics & stuff!

It's been pretty much dubbed "handycam". Yeah, you get some unique angles, and the whole canopy flight, but that's about it. You can't get stills like you can from outside video. Pros-you get paid a lot more, at least we do out here. Cons-it can be fucking scarry. To do good vid, you really have to fly without that hand, and as you know, sometimes you REALLLY need all 4 appendages just to keep the pair flying straight. It looks as though it's gonna be the "new" thing coming, and a lot of DZ's are gonna start offering it, mainly because they can charge less, and not give up another slot on the plane. I've been doing them for about 4 months (250+ handy's) and I still don't like...but I do like the $$$$$$$$$$ my pics & stuff!
