Hussein was a malevolent enemy - fairly evenly matched with the Iranians. A US backed Iraq capable of attacking Iran is a long, long way in the future. Israel is a nation-state. Hezbollah is a terrorist movement. HUGE difference. Any civilians Israel kills are killed while Israel is attacking terrorist targets. Those killed by the Hezbollah terrorists are done killed deliberately. I don't think cementing popular support necessarily means one is rational. We engage China economically on many levels. Diplomatically as well. Doing the same with Iran is just not possible. They've neither the workforce or manufacturing base that China does. Oil, oil, and more oil. And superb food. A Nixon it might take...perhaps one with a cleaner mouth and a bit higher set of morals. You gotta hand it to Tricky Dick, though - a dumbass he was not. Very intelligent man - especially with regards to foreign policy. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

If you enjoy monologues with walls, might I recommend the Great Wall of China? I've been to the Berlin Wall, but didn't find it quite as nice or interesting as the Great Wall of China. What Israel is doing now is killing its members, destroying its arm caches, and attacking its general infrastructure (it, obviously, referring to Hezbollah here). All steps listed by me as what would be required to defeat Hezbollah. I don't see any Israeli plans to aid/assist the innocents and therefore think they're fucking it up. Interesting take, Bill. A few things about the Iran situation cause me to differ my lines of thinking with yours wtih regards to the analogy you've presented. - Mexico and Canada didn't just finish a long war with the US, as Iraq did with Iran on the Iranian western border. Iran's situation on its western border hasn't changed much. It's had an enemy for years and continues to do so. It's also bordered by Pakistan, Azerbeijan, Turkmenistan, and Armenia - Given the fact that Hezbollah has Fajr missiles, I doubt the Iranians supplying the missiles do not want Israeli children blown to bits. - Iranian Democracy is really a secular democracy within an autocratic theocracy. The mullahs have veto power over anything of real meaning. - Ahmadenijad isn't behaving as a rational person on the foreign policy stage, so dealing with him rationally is not possible. I'm really hoping a lot of his ravings/statements are for show and we really have some behind the scenes negotiations going on. - I'm thinking we need to have some sort of basis for dialogue with Iran, but am not really sure how we could go about it given their support of Hezbollah terrorists and nuclear weapons ambitions - 444 days instantly pops into my head everytime I hear the word 'Iran'. Yes, I know it was a long time ago, but it pops in there nonetheless and I can't help but think about that and the regime that did it. Random thoughts from me on Iran from a forgeign policy perspective. I think it's finding a basis for dialogue and agreement with them that is the first step. I'm just wondering what that might be. You really should read up a bit on the news - especially wth regards to the budget. If you were up on your facts you'd realize that tax revenues are actually pouring into the treasury in the wake of GWB's tax cuts - including tax cuts for the rich, who pay the majority of the taxes. The Economist had a nice article on that either last week or the week before. Stop by your local library and read it if you like. Your 'tax the rich' mantra holds little merit and asserting that such a tax increase would cure the deficit in light of CBO/OMB projections is quite humorous. If you were familiar with the budget deficit, its structure, and CBO/OMB projections for its future status and structure, you would realize that health care spending is indeed a significant part of the budget deficit problem of which I spoke. It's pretty easy to show the Dems have no credibility on deficit reduction. Look at their cries of anguish when GWB tried to eliminate DoEd programs that were shown to be ineffective. Or the recent call by Sen. Kerry for universal health coverage by 2012, with the gov't paying for those who can't afford it. Those who seek to increase mandatory spending or refuse to reduce discretionary spending that is ineffective have no credibility on deficit reduction. Period. Those of us familiar with recent history realize the reason for Mr. Cheney seeking to cut the military during Bush Sr's term. Minor thing called the Cold War had just come to an end. You might have heard of it. Of course, if you'd like to tell us why we at the time should have kept up the same military stance as we had in the Cold War, I'm sure we'd all love to hear that. The Republican Congress did pass legislation cutting the military at the request of the President. Both are culpable for cutting a bit too deeply in my opinion, but hindsight is bliss as the saying goes. Do a bit of research. OMB and CBO have excellent websites and resources for you, as does the Bureau of the Public Debt. Good places to start, at any rate. This is true. I don't think their regime could ever hope to match the volume of military aid we rendered in the Cold War...certainly not the lethality (chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein) either. I think the venue of use for the aid Iran renders to terror organizations is more evil than that which we've rendered, though former Soviet troops who served in Kabul in the '80's might not agree. Even then, women and children were not direct targets as is the case with Hezbollah, Hamas, Al Aqsa, and other such groups. Then again, some of the folks we trained at the School of the Americas unleashed some serious evil on the world as well. In retrospect a lot of things we did in the Cold War were counter-productive to a peaceful world in the wake of our victory. Certainly our support of the Shah of Iran from Eisenhower to Carter was a big mistake, especially since we knew what he was doing to his people with SAVAK. Can you imagine what the Middle East & the world would be like today if we'd acted differently with the Shah and Iran in the 50's/60's? The surplus was created under a conservative Congress...Congress appropriates. I'm not a good libertarian, but I'd be a really horrid Republican. My support of drug legalization and refusal to support a total ban on abortion alone wouldn't win me many friends at an RNC convention. I'd certainly be better received there than at a DNC convention, however. Your avatar is ingenious for being Shrek's wife. I remember you now...the campfire... 'tis the lack of anything new that's one of the main reason I think they're doomed. It's new ideas that are needed to resolve the financial crisis we're facing. Ditto for the nation's education problems, though I really believe they should be resolved at the state level for the most part. A massive new NEA funding bill would be discretionary spending in all likelihood. One shudders to think about fed $$ funding a leftist union such as the NEA. One could put mandatory spending in there I suppose if it were worded correctly. The war is mostly discretionary spending, though it will lead to more mandatory spending in the future with regards to benefits, etc. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

We screwed the pooch in Afghanistan in the '80's by allowing Pakistani ISI to direct the funds we were sending over there. Those fuckheads are still screwing us over in Afghanistan today, I'd wager. Not sure I'd make the argument that we exported a lot more murder and mayhem than the current Iranian regime. Ahhh...no answer from you as to Israel's purported ulterior motive...and no solutions for Israel forthcoming from those criticizing it. That motivates me to chuckle and drink tequila...er...I was going to do that anyway; just a different reason to chuckle. Never mind. One doesn't destroy Hizbollah by killing its leaders, though that's certainly a good thing to do. One destroys Hezbollah by killing its members, destroying its arms caches, attacking its financial assets, preventing its resupply, and attacking its supporters physically and financially. All of the above, Israel can do and do quite well. What it will fuck up, is perhaps the most important part. To destroy Hezbollah, Israel must make reparations with the innocents that it has displaced/harmed in order to do the aforementioned. Israel has never done that and because of that, they've prolonged the conflict (if a solution is even possible). Again...no answer...no solution for Israel proferred...tsk tsk tsk Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

You could just say 'No, Vinny, I can't make a plausible argument as to what other objective the Israelis might have' and gotten the same point across.

I'd say completely inept. They keep proving it over and over again. Republicans have abandoned fiscal conservatism and pissed off their base, but what the left offers is so unpalatable they motivate conservatives to the polls in droves to vote against them. The current crises facing America, IMHO, are the budget deficit and our education system. The left has no credibility on either. I think a lot of moderate republicans agree with me on that (I'm libertarian for the most part) and will never vote for a candidate who proposes ideas that will increase mandatory spending and would be beholden to the NEA and seek to maintain the status quo of our nation's school systems by funneling $$ into them and not addressing the underlying issues that keep our schools dumbed down. Without moderates from the Right crossing over to the left, the Dems are doomed to defeat. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

Actually, I think anyone with a three digit IQ would label Hezbollah a terrorist organization. The petrol stations, homes, and any anything or anyone rendering aid to Hezbollah have one hell of a lot to do with the Israeli offensive: they're the target of it. Hezbollah had a stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Hezbollah presence = target, be it inside or outside of the Katyusha's firing range. Hezbollah knows this, and therefore seekds to embed itself among the general populace and make them targets as well. Blanket bombing is not being done - get your facts straight. The Israeli army is going in on the ground and fighting. How can you possibly state otherwise? If the Israeli military were not in the least concerned with civilian casualties, it would have bombed every structure in every village in southern Lebanon and been much further along. Still waiting on those condemning Israel to also condemn with equal fervor the kidnapping of the soldiers and all Katyusha and Fajr attacks. If a country or a person doesn't do so, then they have no credibility when speaking of peace in the region. I'd also be interested in hearing a credible alternative course of action for the Israeli's, as negotiating with terrorists for the release of their soldiers would only entice further aggression. This is a broad offensive and is going to cause a lot of pain and suffering for the people in southern Lebanon. I feel sorry for them and think the Israelis would win huge points in the region if it started an aid program - $$, material, labor for reconstruction, etc. in the region as soon as feasible. I doubt they will, but it would be a nice thing to do. If you think the current Israeli offensive has some other aim than to destroy Hezbollah, please, by all means, enlighten us as to what you think it might be. Equating? I think not. Equating would mean he respects Hezbollah. They're unworthy of respect of any sort. Still no exasperation from the world about the many rockets fired at civilian targets by Hezbollah. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

Mr. Boortz is by no means equating the behavior of the Hezobollah losers with the state of Israel - just making observations about it. It's quite simple, really. Hezbollah chose to attack Israeli troops. Israel chose NOT to sit back and do nothing about the attack upon their troops, but instead to start kicking the living hell out of Hezbollah. Hezbollah, not caring for the people of the country they inhabit, chose to hide among the civilian populace so any Israeli attack upon them would also be quite likely to kill innocent civilians. Unlike Hezbollah with regards to the innocent victims of its rocket attacks, the Israelis actually seem to regret the death of innocents.
