Don't know a lot about his political views other than what I saw in the debates. What I saw in the debates disgusted me thoroughly for the most part. He seems congenial, however. The percentage of priests involved in such despicable antics is quite low. I'd also say that John Paul II lost his ability to lead the Church in America with his non-response to the issue.
