In the future without fossil fuels how could we jump
mcrocker replied to rickjump1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Personally, I'll just hitch a ride on the new space elevator, get off at 100k and say WEEEEEEEE! -
Whaaa?? I don't see the problem. He did put a chuck under the rear tire. Its all good.... EDIT: Guess I should read all of the posts first..... Not so funny the 4th time around

Horseshoe malfunction...of course I could handle it!
mcrocker replied to fudd's topic in The Bonfire
I have lived your dream. Not the exact scenario but I've been at 10k with lines wrapped around my right foot, trying to untangle them. I stopped try to untangle them at 5k feet and went silver. Time seemed to slow down, I had severe tunnel vision on my foot until I heard my brain say 'You're gonna DIE if you keep doing this' and I went chop-chop WHAM. Nice reserve, no handles, sore body ... but alive :) -
Hrmmm. check my math 1.56 deaths / 100,000,000 miles = 0.0000000156 deaths per mile I drive 34,000 miles per year so. 34,000 m/y * 0.0000000156 d/m = 0.0005304 deaths per year of driving 25 deaths / 2,000,000 jumps = 0.0000125 deaths per jump I jump 100 times per year so 100 j/y * 0.0000125 d/j = 0.00125 deaths per year of jumping Looking at my rate of exposure, I'm 2 times more likely to die while skydiving than driving. If I jumped more it would raise the exposure & risk obviously 32k skydivers doing 2M jumps/year = 61 jumps/year I am a bit above average. I can live with that (pun intended)

Maybe all of us skydivers need to write it in our will that our survivors are not allowed to sue the DZ. Would a dead mans last wishes stand up in a stupid court?

I know how you feel, I have well over 3 hours of tunnel time and every minute was well spent. I learned mantis from Eliana (when she worked in Orlando) and Boxman. Lots of fun and I'm a waaay better flyer because of it. You can't say 'I'm not back sliding, you are!' in the tunnel. I was goofing around with a couple friends in the tunnel and one went under me. I whipped around and got to the other side of the tunnel without thinking. I realized then that I could do things in the air just by thinking and I had the muscle memory to make it happen :) It was a happy moment. 'This one time, at tunnel camp....'

If he is a contract employee and the contract runs out he is no longer an employee. Striking is irrelevant. He shouldn't go to work because he no longer has a job. Now, if the contract expired because the HR department screwed up he should be rehired with a new contract. If he was in negotiations for a new contract and couldn't agree on the terms he should only be rehired if he and the company can agree on terms for a new contract. The company is free to hire whomever they choose.

Waaaay too long ago (September 2003), it was a hop-n-pop from 2500 just below the clouds. I hopped, looked up at the plane (C182) and popped. That was jump 299 and I refuse to have #300 a solo from 2k. Now my Cypress is getting its 4 year over haul so I have to wait a couple weeks before I can get #300 in :)

Nope, that doesn't work either. skydivingmovies.com is a forwarding address? Jennifer ;; ANSWER SECTION: www.skydivingmovies.com. 86400 IN CNAME sdm.crocker.com. sdm.crocker.com. 600 IN A 204.97.12.49 Yep www.skydivingmovies.com -> sdm.crocker.com -> 204.97.12.49. sdm.crocker.com is the actual machine name and the website is running as a virtual server on it. It is working fine on the IP because I don't have any other websites defined on the machine. I don't plan on putting new website on it anytime soon so it isn't a real issue. If you see a different site on that IP sometime in the future you'll know why... Yell at your IT department to open up the firewall, tell them you need your daily dosage.
-
Hrm, that shouldn't be working. Try sdm.crocker.com see if that gets through the firewall. Technically www.skydivingmovies.com is a name based virtual server on sdm.crocker.com. The IP may work now but it will probably break when/if I throw another site on that server.

Up and running for all I can see. Pushing about 5Mbps at the moment. Here are some pretty bandwidth usage graphs taken from the switch port looking at the server. Green is inbound, server to me to Internet.

The weather is only shitty because my Cypress is off getting its 4 year. If I can't jump, neither can YOU! I smite you with bad weather, consider yourself smote!

Dumbest thing you did skydiving
mcrocker replied to cocheese's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Just one? There are so many.... I'll give you the one that really sticks out in my mind. I was at Zhills a couple years back fresh off of airspeed skills camp training. All jacked up, flying better than I ever had. We wanted to launch and 8 way from an Otter. A couple of the jumpers refused to launch saying they would dive and dock. I planned a 6 way launch (which went perfectly). We burned 6k feet waiting for the other two to dock. Out of frustration I 'super arched' and funnelled the 6-way. We all broke apart at around 5k feet, everyone recovered and turned and tracked. Nothing happened but it could of. I felt pretty stupid when I landed. -
cutaway charges for rented gear
mcrocker replied to flyuphi99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Read your rental agreement, yes you pay all damages. I'm sure you can attempt to sue the rental car company. You'll need to prove that they intentionally gave you a broken car. They can always claim 'The brakes were working when they drove off the lot'. Test the brakes before you drive off the lot. I have turned rental cars back in because I didn't like the slow leak in the tire or the nasty grinding brake noise. They gave me another rental, no big deal -

So if I read you correctly - You are saying even if the DZ packer left the slider all the way down, and then closed up the bag and let you jump it - BAM - slammer - and the main blows up and you cut it away - Still you have to pay for it. That doesn't make alot of common sense does it? What if the packer had something to be disgruntled about - did it on purpose - Is that your responsibility as well? Yes, If you put the rig on and jump out of plane with it you take all responsibility for the rig and the jump. I would hope a packer wouldn't do something like that on purpose. You do take on all liability, If you don't like it don't jump it. I know many rental rigs require that the last pack job of the day needs to be done by a staff packer. If you get a rig fresh off the rack and you don't trust the pack job you can always open it up and pack it yourself or watch a packer redo it (paying the packing fee). It seems a bit over the top to be this anal on a rental rig but you really don't know what you are getting. I have heard stories where people dump and have a MUCH smaller canopy over their heads because someone told them a different size was in the container. The point is; You are the only one responsible for your skydive and your safety. If you rely on other people to ensure your safety you also need to absolve them of any responsibility. if you don't know, double check you can never be too safe. Don't blame someone else for your lack of safety -
cutaway charges for rented gear
mcrocker replied to flyuphi99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ummm. Yes, if you rent a car and crash it, you are responsible for the full replacement cost of the car. You have a choice at the time of rental to buy additional insurance. If you rent a car and the wheel falls off just after the engine drops out and the tank explodes you are still responsible for replacing the vehicle. Read a rental agreement sometime, you are responsible for EVERYTHING. -
cutaway charges for rented gear
mcrocker replied to flyuphi99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
He paid for a rental rig which 1) he should have inspected, 2) he could have repacked, 3) he could have paid a packer to repack, 4) he could have had an experienced rigger inspect .... Now, if he did hire a rigger to inspect AND get a packer to repack it AND it still malfunctioned, he STILL assumes all responsibility and has to replace the equipment. If you don't like it, buy your own gear or don't jump. YOU are soley responsible for YOUR skydive -
cutaway charges for rented gear
mcrocker replied to flyuphi99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
To put it simply you are responsible for your jump. If you rent gear you have two choices 1). Jump it as given and accept all responsibility 2). Repack the main and jump it, accepting all responsibility With this thinking, if you have a malfunction you are responsible for your actions and the result which may come. When you rent gear you are supposed to bring it back in the same condition. If you lose some gear, you should replace it with gear of simiiar type and quality. From a customer service point of view the DZ shouldn't try to make a profit off of the deal. The customer should be allowed to replace the gear by purchasing from different suppliers. If similar gear cannot be found a replacement cost should be paid. Finding a used 230 sq ft F111 canopy with 3000 jumps on it isn't that easy. In this case the jumper should pay an amortized amount of the replacement cost. At some point during the life of equipment it has reached its fully depreceated value and is essentially worthless. -
Nah, rub dirt in it, chicks dig scars... Can't really tell from the picture, how deep is it? Doesn't look too bad. If it has stopped bleeding throw a bandaid on it to pull the skin together
