Piranahas are not as bad as they are made out to be. In the wild, Piranaha only attack/eat the wounded animals. If your hand has a cut on it they might take a bite. After the rainy season when the waters start to dry up a group of piranaha will get trapped in a small pool. Evenutally they will eat all of the other fish and turn cannablistic. Only when they are starving with no food with they attack en mass and devour a healthy animal. I didn't see the video, not my cup o' tea but I can only assume they were very hungry when the mouse was introduced.

Why does the word 'monosyllabic' have so many syllables? Why do we park in a driveway and drive in a parkway?

What are YOU spending your tax return on?
mcrocker replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
I have my eyes on a John Deere LS130 riding lawn mower with attached bagger and 42" snow blower :) woohoo! I'm a home owner now so I need all of the toys -
Thank you... Thank you... I'll be here all week, try the veal.

I turn my hands into puppets and have them start yelling at each other.. 'Pull!' 'No, YOU Pull!' 'No, I'm not going to pull until YOU pull' 'Pull!!!' Eventually one of them chickens out and pulls something.

If you have to ask the answer is always yes. You can appeal but the appeal process costs you a case and you'll lose.

Chest strap save on load, How common is this?
mcrocker replied to skydonkey's topic in Safety and Training
I miss routed my chest strap as a student. I didn't loop it back through the metal part, just back through the elastic. My AFF instructor did a 'check' and said everything was great and 'ARE YOU READY TO SKYDIVE?'. I was doing the check along with him and spotted it and yelled "NO" and pointed to my chest strap. He was a bit freaked that he missed it. He fixed it and we did the jump. I think I actually passed that level too. I was too new to know that I was a dead man. It freaks me out a lot more now than it did back then. Now I check my chest strap 20 billion times before I jump. -
How did you come up with the cashola?
mcrocker replied to Spatula's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I stayed in school, got a decent education, started my own business. Have a kick ass job and enough money to play in the sports I love. Not quite the answer you were looking for but hey... This is my sport, not my job. I fully respect everyone that works in this industry and makes it better for all of us. I don't think I could do it, I skydive to relax, I wouldn't want it to become a job. -
We have plans to invade Cuba, Columba, Mexico, Africa, Asia, just about EVERY country (and yes I know, Africa and Asia are not countries). That is what war planners do, they plan. They play the 'what would happen if..' scenarios. Plans for invading Iraq were around while Clinton was in office. I would much rather have a folder in a file cabinet with a plan 'What to do in the first 96 hours when Cuba invades Florida' than not having any plan at all. In a time of crisis you must have a plan to follow in the initial stages. Hell, I have disaster recovery plans for my company sitting on a shelf, I hope I never use them but they are there and updated on a semi-regular basis. The fact that the plan exists before 9/11 doesn't necessarily mean Bush was actively pursuing that plan.

I recently took and passed my CCNA. I'll be getting CCDA next week, CCNP, CCDP in the next month or so. CCIE written in the summer. I've been working with Cisco IOS, IP, Routing (BGP, OSPF), Switching (MPLS, Ethernet) for amost 10 years now. I know the tech, I just need to know the specifics of the tests. I should be able to get CCNP without too much difficulty, CCIE is going to be a bitch but I have enough Cisco stuff in my network now that I should be able to work through all of the lab problems. Ultimate goal is to become a Certified Silver Partner which requires 2 CCIE, 1 CCDP, 1 CCNP, 1 CCNA, 1 CCDA. My ops manager (working with me for 7 years) has taken the CCNA test twice, almost passed it both times. Hopefully he'll get it next week. CCNA is a bitch because you need to know a little bit about a lot of topics. CCNP testing is more focused, it should be easier to study for. I'm scared of the Microsoft tests, put me infront of a router or a Linux box and I'm at home. Put me in front of a Windoze box and I just keep clicking until it works
-
Congrats, I'm working on the Cisco track right now, the cert tests can be a bitch sometimes. I'm hoping to make CCIE by the end of the year, need 4 more tests and a lab

I spent 10 days cycling around the south island of New Zealand and I absolutely loved it. Everything about that island is awesome. I would love to go back. My wife and I are passport stamp collectors, we want to go to as many countries as possible. So far for me its New Zealand Mexico Barbados Sint Maarten Short list but it will be growing.

[punch line explanation] Ya see... They use E-MAIL to notify us when our E-MAIL is under attack! Bwahahahahahaha. Get it? That is like the newspaper printing a story about their press fire. TV news doing a report on the a cable outage. The e-mail will come from the U.S. Department of redundancy department. [/punch]

Return from "winter breaks" - do you get the shakes?
mcrocker replied to xavenger's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It is hard to tell if it is me shaking or the cessna working the last bit of cobwebs out of the pistons. After an extended period of not jumping I am very 'awake' when I actually do jump. Fear is always part of it, I don't know if I visibly tremble but I am nervous. Once I get into the air it all comes back until the time I need to deploy then fear comes rushing back until I'm under a good canopy. The canopy ride is ussually tell my self "See it wasn't so bad you chicken shit" and wonder why I didn't get my knees in the breeze sooner. -
Slower tends to mean lower pressure in the canopy cells. Lower pressure means the canopy can be more apt to deflate due to turbulence or a cross wind. Turblence and colapsing cells can send a skydiver into the dirt. Slower also means less energy. Energy is used to trade for lift during a flare so slower tends to lead to less powerful flares. You could still be going forwards and have a bad landing because you don't have enough energy for a good flare. Although, because you are slower you walk away instead of being carried away. Ron, I'm sure you know all this stuff, just wanted to point it out to those that may not.

Linux is free as in beer. Everyone can have the recipe for beer, but most people still pay for it. Long term the TCO for Linux is about the same for MS products. I run both, I have run Linux for over 10 years now. I use Linux in production because I'm skilled in doing so. I also use Linux in production because I can resolve problems quite a bit faster than a closed system. I honestly don't think I'm saving any money by running Linux, I do feel that I'm more productive and more responsive to my customers needs. Anyone who uses Linux for the 'chic' factor is an idiot. It does require an entirely different skill set than the normal MCSE 'next, next, next, finish' type of systems administrator.

Preaching to the choir son. I've been running Linux since '92 and in a production environment since '94. I have about 20 Linux servers in production now. All of my mail & web hosting is done on Linux. Personally, I have a Mac on my lap which I use for normal desktop stuff. Gotta love OS X :) PS. There are plenty of Linux viruses out there. The average time to live for an unprotected, fresh installed box on the Internet is 15 minutes. Doesn't matter if it is *BSD, Linux or Windblows. Everything is insecure. It is easier IMHO to make Linux secure but it doesn't come out of the box that way.
