2 Vegan + baby = starved baby + 2 life in prison
freeflybella replied to dorbie's topic in Speakers Corner
Just as you were posting this, I was trying to edit my post. I read more on the case and it seems they were not feeding the baby. In no way am I trying to justify their behaviour. I was merely responding to the question about mental illness. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi -

From what I could tell, they weren't feeding the infant soy formula. They were feeding him soy milk. In which case, they could have been feeding him 25 bottles of soy milk per day and he still could've "starved." For whatever reason - soy milk and apple juice were the preferred choice for this couple. To me, that goes beyond being "vegan" - that speaks to ignorance, negligence, mental illness...etc. It may not have been murder. They may have been feeding that baby all day long. So are cows, but they feed their calves a mother's milk. This just shows the stupidity of the lifestyle. No it fucking doesn't. It shows that vegans are human. Humans do dumb and tragic things. I guess you're saying no omnivore has ever starved a child ??!! What a ridiculous and narrow-minded statement....starving babies show the stupidity of the vegan lifestyle...sheesh. edited: I replied way too quickly and now see that many others have responded much more eloquently. Even assuming the woman knew the man had promised to be faithful another woman: The man is worse. He's breaking a promise. The woman is just too stupid to think he won't do it to her or too insecure to think she couldn't find a better man. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Weenies. Cheaters are weenies. They don't SUCK, they're not HORRIBLE and AWFUL and it's not a TRAGEDY - they're just cowardly sad boring unoriginal weenies. And that goes for the people they cheat with. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

During the most extreme point of my parent's hippie phase, the home environment was no TV (none existed), and no food with artificial colors or preservatives. Red meat was basically off the table and my primary protein sources were tofu, fish, and ground turkey as the beef substitute. For me, this was late grade school - maybe 3rd-6th? But the reality was that we adapted - kept our candy out of sight, caught TV at friends's houses and from the TV in the shed in the backyard (till an unfortunate fire in the alley took it out). Remove the total crap from the schools and kids will still get some level of it. But part of the day, they'll eat a bit better than they would otherwise. In Jr high I recall eating a 'lunch' that was an ItsIt surrounded by two large cookies. Sounds hilarious now. (Selling caffeine free diet coke as the only cola option seems cruel.) Totally. I remember eating packages of grape Kool-Aid powder with a candy stick-like spoon! Then again, I was raised on bologna (back when bologna only contained snouts and assholes) and "cheese" slices on Wonder Bread (contained lard). I don't plan to ban this food completely - he's a boy - he needs a sugar high once or twice in life. But for me, they key is to keep it out of the house as a rule. Still say NO soda, candy, or even ANY processed (no additives, dyes, chemicals) food in schools and hospitals. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

"It's not fair to the troops to second guess (the war)"
freeflybella replied to freeflybella's topic in Speakers Corner
They are playing on guilt when they do this...guild connected to the way the troops were handled after the disaster that was Vietnam. The politicians and generals all walked away with money can good careers after that, but those kids were treated like shit. It took nearly a decade to even start the recognition and respect those troops deserved and most remember the embarasment of that. Thus, they are playing upon the fears of doing that again. I'm also insulted to beleive that they insult our intleigence by claiming this is a black/white issue....as if no one can comprehend the complexity of what is going on.....nor that it is possible to seperate feelings into different catogories on the same topic. I fully support the troops over there. I am fully against this Administration, its policy and this war. Fuck off to anyone that tells me I can't feel that way. I never made that connection before but it sure fits. It's such bullshit and so manipulative. I don't even really get what people say when they say they "support the troops". Is that a nod to Vietnam, too - when the troops were spit on and yelled at, etc? I guess back then - culturally - it was accepted that fleeing the country to avoid the draft was really an option. And today, with an all volunteer armed forces - the troops must follow orders and fight the war. So when one says he "supports the troops", does he mean he doesn't blame them for not dissenting? If so - what the fuck do the politicians mean?! Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi -

2. I in no way meant to imply that my way was the right way or best way. But obviously I live by my beliefs and values. Also I do know that I have alot to experience and learn.

I think this is a terrible argument for junk food in schools. There is no supervision (to moderate) junk food in schools. Parents should moderate junk food. Additionally, there is only so much time in the day for a kid. If they are "deprived" of junk food all day - it's not as if they are going to come home at 3 and binge on twinkies til bedtime. Especially if the parents are modeling good eating habits by not keeping twinkies in the house. http://www.feingold.org/PF/wisconsin1.html Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

My son and I are vegan. He gets NO sugar and no TV either. And he has no desire for it. He doesn't see me eating it or watching TV (I wait til he goes to bed) so he doesn't want it. Every now and then I'll buy a bag of (organic, fruit sweetened) cookies but he just has no sweet tooth. Olives. He could eat olives by the pound. Also, every so often at Grandma's (the TV is on constantly) she'll turn it to Elmo or Barney or something - to try to "prove" to me that I'm depriving him... Nope. Won't watch TV. (I'm sure when he hits school age he'll see other kids eating crap and want to try it. You better believe I'm going to let him otherwise he'll be an addict in no time!) Hospitals and schools should not be feeding people anything but healthy, fresh food. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Call me simple but... Wouldn't the troops like to come home if we determine this war is no longer just? edited: I hate hate hate when politicians take the discussion of the war "to the troops on the ground". Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi -
NPR broadcasts BBC World News. My favorite thing these days about NPR is This American Life with Ira Glass. It's on one day per week - and you can download a free podcast of the current weeks' show - or purchase past episodes for $1.00 from their website. It's an amazing show. Either way - you're still just looking. Watching. And as in the case of all of the world's zoos, circuses and animal shows - you're not even seeing/watching the natural animal. You're seeing/watching the animal out of its environment and behaving out of character. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

I agree. But the act of caging animals shows a dominance and disrespect to animals. In a way, we've taught children that we are dominant, that animals do not deserve respect and that there is little to "really" fear (See how close we can get and not get hurt?). Animal shows and zoos show us that we can get within striking distance of a crocodile or tiger with nothing to fear. That's a pretty mixed message to a kid, wouldn't you say? I'd suggest most fucked up part is the culture that says that animals are here for our whims. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

or give them guns. Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of stop caging animals. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

The whole "____(blank)_______ happened to me and I turned out fine." is such a useless argument. You can't look at exceptions to disprove the norms. I think the studies are quite clear that verbal abuse and intimidation does affect children. So she is pretty well within her rights to say it is wrong to do it. Sure, that kid might turn out just fine as a narcissistic materialistic shallow normal person. Or a hollow, dissociated, introverted normal person. But it's more likely than not her self-esteem is at risk. Besides, when you say "normal" - just exactly what do you mean? Law-abiding? Successful? Confident? Married with 2 kids and a dog?
