My opinion on this topic was formed during a visit to a (now defunct) south Florida DZ where it seemed everyone except me was smoking pot between loads and all evening. The DZO was passing the stuff around. I didn't see the pilot smoking, but the instructors were. The bunkhouse stank of MJ smoke. I never went back, nor do I wish to experience anything like it again. I was kind of pleased to hear that they had gone Tango Uniform. Three times is enemy action

Or, that your boss has decided that in order for you to get to work on time, you need to leave your house at 8:35 AM and take the freeway, or be fired. This is because some people were ticketed for speeding on local roads on their way to work and it was making a bad name for the company. So he installed a video camera in your car and it showed that yesterday, you left your house at 8:40 and took local roads... So even though you got to work on time and endangered no one on your drive there, you were fired anyway. What are the arguments there? Do you say "Well if you just leave for work on time and follow the requirements of your employer, what's the problem? It's his right to decide what he wants from you." Or "As long as it's not a requirement that all employers put video cameras in employee's cars it doesn't bother me -- I can get another job if I don't like it?" Where do you draw the line? (And no fair turning it into an argument about the recklessness of speeding on local roads, or the inaccuracy of speedometers, or the weak morals of people who sleep late...) I say that supply and demand will fix the situation. If the employees leave en-mass, the boss will have to change his policy or go out of business. Otherwise, either accept the policy or look elsewhere for a job. No-one is compelled to be a jump pilot or TM. Three times is enemy action

Since these are well known issues, they can be dealt with, just like the snowstorm that caused many employees to be late in the northeast this morning. My kid had to submit to random drug testing to be on his high school gymnastics team (or any varsity sports team). Some parents sued. Case went all the way to the State Supremes, who upheld the school's position, in part *because* the school had a protocol in place to deal with such issues. If you don't like the odds the solution is simple: don't apply for a job at a testing DZ. Three times is enemy action

Does your DZ have a drug testing policy for Staff members?
Tf15 replied to WFFC's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Exactly why a lot of people are against them. They're unreliable, easily beaten, and often show false positives. If someone doesn't use anything they should still be leary of submitting to random testing. You should be assumed to be innocent as is the foundation of our justice system. You gain nothing by testing clean, you should have been assumed to be clean in the first place. But if you score a false positive, it could ruin your life. That would have relevance if it were a government mandated test and you would be prosecuted for failing it. It is not relevant for a private business decision. If you (generic) don't like it, just don't apply for a position there. Three times is enemy action -

You sure you're a skydiver? What if that was your DZ that got closed with the excuse that it was done for security reasons? I ALMOST flew as a passenger to Meigs the day after it closed. I'm on a mailing list of pilots in the DC area. One mentioned he was going to fly his bonanza to meigs the next day for a couple hours and wanted to know if anyone wanted to come. As it turned out, I read the email at just about the same time the runway was starting to be ripped up, but we didn't know it. I replied, but it turned out 6 others had replied before me so I didn't get a seat. The pilot had checked the NOTAMS when he filed his flight plan the night before (before the closure) and all was good. He took off and headed toward chicago. Halfway there though, the engine temporarily lost power. Everything seemed fine afterwards but he decided to make a precautionary landing at the nearest airport. A quick inspection showed nothing wrong and no water in the gas tanks, and the engine seemed to be running fine, so they decided to forget meigs and fly home. They only found out when they got back that they wouldn't have been able to land at meigs anyway. Dave Unfortunately, there is now one less airport for precautionary landings. Tough if you get engine problems while over southern Lake Michigan. I landed at Meigs maybe 5 or 6 times over the years, one of the prettiest airports imaginable. Three times is enemy action

You must be joking. You can have seriously impaired judgement and reflexes without showing signs of disorientation or being inarticulate. If being articulate was a good test of competence then George Bush would not be President. The customer should not be put in the position of having to make this call about a total stranger. This is not a government mandate, it's a requirement by a business owner on the people that he or she employs to look after the safety of his (or her) customers. Liberties also apply to business owners in the way they run their businesses, provided it's within the law. If the staff object, they are at liberty to go elsewhere. I see it as no different from the requirements that I turn up on time for my job, and do what the boss asks of me (which included working on Sunday today, when I'd rather be at the DZ). If I don't like that, I can look for employment elsewhere. If mandatory drug testing were a government requirement on all citizens then I'd agree that would constitute an invasion of privacy. The following is a quote from the 04/01/01 edition of SDC's Weekly Update email newsletter, written by Roger Nelson, the DZO. I try my best not to read too far into things, but that last sentence seems to serve mostly to imply that DZs that do not require drug testing of staff are effectively condoning drug and alchohol use. Infer what you like, I think it's a good policy. And if that inference pressures other DZs to follow suit, that's all the better. Three times is enemy action

Drug testing for DZ Instructors/TMs/Pilots
Tf15 replied to diverdriver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
if its such a safety issue then why not also require a hangover test, an adaquate sleep test, emotional stability test, general attitude test ...etc?? "what?" you might say not meaning you specifically"but you can observe those things to determine if there is a problem or not??" perhaps if the only way you can tell if someone is doing drugs (and therefore "unsafe") is by having them piss in a cup, then their actual "impairement" isn't as significant as the government propaganda would leave you to believe. as i said at the start, if the DZO/ ST&A doesn't trust his employees from the beginning and there is no behavior/performance reason to suspect they are creating an unsafe environment what does that say about their judgment in the first place? But what if the impairment doesn't affect routine tasks, but affects response to an emergency situation? Without putting the pilot in a flight simulator how would a DZO ever know that there was a performance issue? Just because a TM can make 500 "normal" tandem jumps doesn't mean he won't show impaired judgement when it comes to a situation requiring a cutaway. If anyone is going to sell their services to the public in a situation where they make the life and death decisions, they should be prepared to show that they are clean. I just don't buy your argument at all. Three times is enemy action -
Not true - that concept was inherited from English Common Law. And on to the main point - I prefer not to jump with people who are high on anything other than altitude. Three times is enemy action

It would be good if you would differentiate between what you know for a fact, and what you have heard from some media source that is just hearsay. Some of the things you state unequivocally as "facts" suggest you had dinner last night with the Director of the CIA. Three times is enemy action

No no no no no no no. What you guys have is a namby-pamby version of rugby, except you've added pads because you're a bunch of wusses. 'Football' is a game played, coicidentally, with the feet. And don't believe the Sun, there's no way the Iraqis would have beaten us if the conditions were fair. The Australians would beat us, but since we kicked Turkey's ass we sure as hell wouldn't lose to the Basra Boys. Uh, the Iraqis were playing 42 Commando of the Royal Marines, not Manchester United... If they'd sent a bunch of Manchester United or Liverpool fans in with the UN inspectors, this entire war would have been unnecessary. Three times is enemy action

Physics Presentation on Skydiving
Tf15 replied to NoShitThereIWas's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, Newton's laws give you much more than just Bernoulli's princible.. That is not true, PROVIDED you do the calculations correctly. Some things to think about: How is the air deflected downwards unless there are pressure differences? How can there be pressure differences unless there are velocity differences? How can the lift force be inconsistent with the pressure differences? Three times is enemy action -
I doubt they have reported anything that the CIA didn't want the Iraqis to know about. All part of the PSYOPS. Three times is enemy action
