The pledge ruled unconstitutional in public schools
mr2mk1g replied to livendive's topic in Speakers Corner
On the one hand I completely agree - it really doesn't matter much at all. I'm sure there are many people though for whom the saying of the words "under God" really would matter to them. A persons religion can be very important to them. Many have been burned alive for refusing to say similar things. But no, in a modern world it doesn't matter that much... it's hardly an "indivisible" society though if only a portion of it is included in the phrase mind. And then again... where I have to sit on a bus really doesn't matter to me either much... And BTW, I'm not about to lie during something as serious as a Naturalization ceremony. I consider my religious values very important to me... simply missing out a phrase I don't agree with and hoping no one would notice is not on. -

My life plans may still involve my emigration to the US. Should I go down this route I would be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in full on naturalization. As I do not recognize a Judo/Christian deity I guess I'm not welcome. That's fair enough – it's your country you can accept whoever you want. I just find it a little odd that your country also claims not to discriminate between people of different faiths while also prohibiting the acceptance of people who don't recognize a "God". But as I said, it's your country, you can treat minorities any way you like... just don't expect me to buy claims that you consider all men to be equal. Discrimination is discrimination. It matters not if it is creed, colour or class. -

No, I compared racist discrimination to religious discrimination. They seem pretty similar to me. -

Guess 'dem niggers better just go back to sitting quietly at the back of the bus. It's only their feelings that'll be hurt afterall. -

Capitalism won. Many consider God to be loosing to Capitalism also. -
The two main one's in the States are http://www.skydivingmagazine.com/ and http://www.uspa.org/publications/. I subscribe to both as well as http://www.skydivemag.com/. All three have their plusses and minuses and they tend to feed off each other. Eg there's a series of FF articles in The Mag at the which seem to then come out in Parachutist the next month... or maybe it's the other way round(?). There are also magazines put out by many other national skydiving organizations which you could sign up to. Most of the information though comes out on this website about a month or two before it hits the pages of even the best publication going... it's just the way things are these days.

You should tell them the one about how Bush reportedly thinks he's the Metatron.

The pledge ruled unconstitutional in public schools

Exactly. Atheists are good people just because they are good people. Not because they are told they must be good in order to get a reward such as going to a certain kind of afterlife. Which kid would you rather have; the kid who cuts his neighbours lawn because they want to do something nice, or the kid who does it because they want to get a reward? Of course some Atheists are absolute bastards... just as are some Christians. -
Are you serious?

Apparently he's right though: http://hrw.org/english/docs/2004/11/29/usdom9741.htm As I do when ever this issue comes up here I'll post this link also to a charity group of UK lawyers who go to the states to try and make sure death row inmates get access to at least a little competent legal advice. http://www.amicus-alj.org/

Canopy Malfunction: Lineover (*landed*, with photos)
mr2mk1g replied to SudsyFist's topic in Safety and Training
In some countries the carrying of a knife for that very reason is mandatory. Yes you can cut one line and probably see very little effect on the way in which your canopy flies. The usual advice is however that you ought not bother trying to cut lines on your main canopy but rather resort to your reserve instead. Obviously though, in the unlikely event of a problem with the reserve, then perhaps a knife could be employed there. -
Wow, I stand corrected. Thanks.

Not in the developed world perhaps... but I'm not sure you'd be right for the whole world.

...in your judgment.

The subject of the quoted sentence is Kris, not the post.

Well to be fair, according to the article at least one of the judges in this case considered himself bound by the precedent that the 9th Circuit case you linked to created... so your football taunt is kinda relevant. -

That article's dated 6/27/2002 This is another court that found the pledge to be unconstitutional. -

I've jumped out of a Cherokee in use as a standard jump plane. I don't recall if the door was removed though but it was set up and approved for S/L jumps so I doubt there are any major concerns about the plane in and of itself.

The pledge ruled unconstitutional in public schools
mr2mk1g replied to livendive's topic in Speakers Corner
Yes, that could well be a perfectly valid point... assuming you are right in your interpretation of the constitution and Judges with their years and years of experience in dealing with the US legal system and it's complex interplay with your constitution are wrong. I personally am not about to start disagreeing with a load of Judges who've spent a long time looking into the subject. I'm sure they know more about it than I. If the case makes its way up to the Supreme Court I'm sure there'll be a satisfactorily authoritative judgment on the question. -
The pledge ruled unconstitutional in public schools
mr2mk1g replied to livendive's topic in Speakers Corner
I think the best sound bite from Jefferson on the subject is probably: "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibit the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state." Either that or that Treaty he signed explicitly stating that the Us was not founded on Christian principals. Alas though, I feel this thread is straying onto a very worn path. -
The pledge ruled unconstitutional in public schools
mr2mk1g replied to livendive's topic in Speakers Corner
Well... whilst I have of course vastly over simplified the matter; it is the generally accepted major conceptual difference between a Democracy and a Republic. A Democracy is run by an omnipotent majority while a Republic has constraints placed upon it by it's constitution and legal framework to prevent ts views being forced upon minorities and individuals. -

No - that would be a Democracy. You live in a Republic. The purpose of a Republic is to protect minorities from the will of the majority. -
Last I heard there was difficulty in finding a DZ willing to go through the arse ache of getting planning consent for, digging and maintaining a pond big enough to meet requirements.
