Just jumped in Indonesia this February. Edy C has a little DZ outside of Jakarta. Nestled between two dormant volcanos, it only sports one Cessna. Since it was the rainy season, the clouds were caught between a line of low mountains and came in below the volcanos peaks. Surprisingly, it was clear above the DZ part time while the volcanos remained constantly touching clouds and dripping temporary waterfalls from the rain. Bright greens and fantastic operation and friendly people (cafe, packing ~ $1, bunk rooms, creeper pad, etc.) Beautiful location. AMF

Add another one to your list. I only started skydiving recently ( 90 jumps so far), but I'm really enjoying it. I've been scuba diving 21 years, qualified as an instructor in 1984. I do a fair bit of cave diving, trimix and rebreather stuff. A few discussion points that might interest you, based on my observations here in South Africa. Most of the skydivers in the club at our DZ have qualified as scuba divers at some time, even if only to a very basic level. On the other hand, not many of the scuba divers I know have ever tried skydiving. I believe that roughly half the skydivers have tried scuba, only about 5% of the scuba guys have tried skydiving. (Based purely on my perceptions - I'd be interested to hear opinions from others) People often ask me which is more dangerous, scuba diving or skydiving. Of course, it depends on your views on either being a "danger sport". I haven't got any statistics to back this up, but I feel that scuba is more dangerous. In skydiving most emergency situations have a common response (two handles!), whereas many scuba diving emergencies rely on an "assessment" stage in order to decide on the correct action. The skydiving emergency responses are largely motor skills, the scuba responses often have to be considered. Where the scuba diver does have an advantage is time - the ground is not rushing up at 200 kph when your regulator fails! Anyone else got any ideas on this? blue skies / safe diving Mike Beresford mberesford@amplats.co.za

Ah! scuba! I sure do enjoy a good dive in warm water with some visibility, problem is you gotta go a long way to get it. I been to Cozumel stayed at Casa Del Mar. It was decent. Not like a five star but nice for the money. Some good dives. Palancar reef, Santa Rosa wall, Pase Cedral Its all good there. Water 100+ vis. and about 82 degrees. We even made a couple of shore dives right in front of the Hotel. There's an old plane in about 25 ft. of water. You guys in Tx have a nice dive spot about 100 miles off the coast of Freeport. The flower gardens, its about $300 for the weekend on a dedicated dive boat. I started skydiving again because I couldn't get enough scuba in. Now skydiving has taken over. I made a dive in the Gulf Of Mexico right off the coast of Louisiana, but you have to go about 50 miles to get good water and it cost about $125 for a one day trip. Spear fishing is great on the rigs. Scuba is a lot of fun but skydiving is still more fun and I think a better value! Cloud9 (i can't get logged in)

The first time this happened to a girl-friend of mine, she was at Z-Hills and was buying beer for her first time jumping there. Everyone started yelling "HER, HER, F&*% HER". And she thought it was a bad thing and was thinking to herself...."but.....but ....I bought beer...." lol lol. She was quickly filled in on the tradition. Tee

What DZ are U from?? And if you would what is this guy's name so I can watch out for him?? I am sure others would like to also. Thanx, -Numskull

Where are you driving from????? Do you do RW or FF?

We had this happen at our dz. The guy had a bag lock and didn't cut it away before going for the reserve. The opening shock of the reserve was enough to unlock the malfunction and he found himself under two side by side canopies. He was able to get himself to an open field and despite the down wind landing, walked away shaken but un-injured. After seeing that if I ever get a bag lock I'll be chopping it. :-) Susan (looks like I'm still anonymous)

i've been reading the posts here for a while (almost a year), and there's something i keep noticing but can't quite figure out. why is it that whenever a skydiver accomplishes a new goal (first jump, new license, etc) that THEY are the one to buy the beer, as opposed to being the one treated to free beer? this has had me stumped for some time now, just curious what the idea behind that is....(btw, when i get the money i'm joining the family, so let's hope i don't have to feel like an "outsider" for much longer, you lucky bastards)

This is just too funny. Colombian thieves are using their breasts to rob men. Yeah right... that's what I would say if I was seen licking some girl's boobs and then didn't have any money left 4 hours later. Blues, squares, Anonymous *Insert Anonymous sig here*

Here's the scoop on the fatality in San Marcos last Sunday. I wasn't there and it was a new person at the DZ. Michele Thibaudeau was from Cartersville, GA and had around 850 jumps. They were flying a formation load with the Otter and a King air. The king was supposed to be trail plane but passed the otter on jump run. When they went she caught the prop of the otter. The engine on the Otter was destroyed but it landed safely. I didn't know this lady but thought I would pass this on if any of you did. May she rest in peace. And all of you that are still jumping may you have blue skies and safe dives. Live each day to it's fullest it may be our last.

My God, there are 2G tables on dz.com? The forum has about 20k postings, each of which is well under 1k, but if they were that big, it would still only add up to 20M! We just passed 3000 users, which to get to 2G would mean that each row was over 6.6M! By the way, Linux, Apache, mySQL rocks! Had to be said. Dude, you are too cool.
-
HH, Did you perhaps hit the 2GB table limit on MySQL? The newer versions of MySQL have the ability to store a table across multiple files to prevent this from happening. Sounds like you might want a couple indices on some tables too. The Dutchboy

A student is taught in the FJC to pull all handles. Pammi is correct in that this helps to decrease the chances of second guessing the correct emergency procedures. In this case, at 2 grand, of course you cut away and pull the oh-shit handle. BUT, students are also taught this because students should pull at 3500' or higher. It is hoped, as has historically been the case, that by the time the student is in a situation that he/she might be low and in trouble, the student will have been involved in discussions such as this, and will be able to make an informed decision as to what he/she will do in any situation. This used to be accomplished during after hours or rainy day beer drinking sessions, but now, thanks to Sangrio, those who don't hang out and hear the wisdom (and great stories) of the old timers, can get good information online. These polls are an awesome way to make us all think about how we would handle a bad situation.
