When I first meet them I ask them a few questions then tell them my name and say I have a lovely wife and 3 kids to go home to so their in good hands. What he said!!!! I hate it when they mush down in the harness. You just cant get the harness tight enough to stop it. I will take up to 300 lbs and have. I would rather take the big guys or the little girlees. If they cant sit on the edge of a chair or table and hold their legs up for 20 seconds I wont take them. I dont really think flips add that much danger to any tandem. As a tandem instructor you should be able to gain stabality from any exit. In very quick order. I do flips 50 percent of the time and find it simple to have the student stay balled up until I tap their shoulders. When I open up after 2,3,4, flips however many I want to do this presents a great center of gravity and puts us face to earth instantly. If they dont do as told well then it is like the 5 to 10 % that go to the Zoo any way and I do what I am supposed to do any how get stable and set the drouge. Side note: There were some study jumps done last year concerning Teva's and they are not advised for TI's because of they are big hooks on your feet. Would you take a student with hooks on their boots???? Not with out taping them!! I dont have any paticulars on the jumps I have heard they were done in responce to the Tandem accident in Hawaii 2002. but have no other info. Although I dont know Paul all I have been able to think about for the last 2 days is Paul. When a passenger puts their feet straight down or is not willing to do what is needed to help them self then I cant do much else. I try to assess each passenger to see if they can perform and even have them sit on a table and lift their legs for 5 seconds just to give me an idea of their strength. I have had people who cant get their legs up in the new Sigma harness now thats bad. There are ways to minumize injurie such as butt slides but if the passenger wont or cant lift their feet on a no wind landing I just try to minumize the load I transfer to them when we go over. They are my responsibility that doesnt mean I will break myself with them. My job is to make their skydive and landig as safe as I possibly can. there is really know way to PLF a tandem. As Aggie said it is our job to take first impact, well unless they just wont get them feet up then there is little we can do. Rodeo'd one this weekend. winds died as we turned on final and she couldnt or wouldnt get her feet up and she went grazing. grass in her mouth pants and shirt. I stood it up though so She wouldnt get hurt worse. This puts us in a lot more danger for stress fractures and broken Tib Fib's, back injuries and general danger . This is one reason the new harness are so great. Once a passanger mushes through the old harness there isnt much you can do if they arent willing to help or cant. I personally would never adjust leg straps under canopy. I will slide them foward if using the old style Vector harness. As for adjusting the harness befor the jump I will make it very tight just before going to the plane it shuld become some what loose when student sits down, I belive you can over tighten a harness. They are made to be tight in the upright and arched possition. Hell tall slender women when sitting I can and will sometimes slide them off thier shoulders and say {Damn I got the wrong harness Again Honey you better hold on tight when I wave in your face}. All I can say is the Tandem harness has a chest strap also and just because there is a TM on their back doesnt mean it wont slip. Although I have never had one slip I have seen students land with one that had slipped.That is one reason the strap webbing is doubled at the end. To keep it from slipping out.
