  3. It's dangerous. Don't fool yourself. Even though there is nothing behind you on a bridge (making it perhaps a bit LESS dangerous), it is still dangerous. BASE jumping at it's safest is till a game of odds. Jumping a single parachute system is still MUCH more dangerous than skydiving, no matter how careful you are packing, jumping, exiting, or whatever. I have never been to bridge day, but I am guessing that it is probably MORE stressful to make a first BASE jump there than it is at your local illegal span. Its 1AM with a full moon and you have quite a few minutes to psych yourself up to go as you hang out on the catwalk of bridge X. or "oh shit, 3 more people till I go, how is my bridle, have my sweaty hands made the pilot chute a big uninflatable block 2 more people oh shit that guy went head down fuck look at the landing area 1 more person nice exit on that one how is my bridle my turn oh shit are my thread thrus OK my turn, do I go NOW or what? shit here goes" At least that is how I envision me doing my first BASE jump at BD. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
  4. Well pardner, I would have to strenuously disagree that bridge day is not a real base jump. You are jumping with a parachute off a span. baSe! But, that is just my opinion. If BASE to you means there has to be some aspect of banditry to it, that's cool. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
  5. Dude, you totally misunderstood my post. Oh no, wait, I guess you did understand it. No wait. If my post in any way gave you the impression that I condone paint huffing or toad licking, you are way off base. Anyway, blue skies. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
  6. BASE is about different things to different people. I have like 30 jumps off of bridges. No other objects. Frankly, I currently have no desire to jump off anything else. Am I a true BASE jumper? no, probably not by most people's definition. But I am content (when I am healthy enough neck-wise) to jump off bridges and be scared and politely decline offers to go to other local "stuff behind me" objects. Am I looked down upon within the hardcore BASE community? Probably. But I really don't care. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
  7. IF this is true, it sure points to how friggin out of touch with reality the North Koreans are. What possible useful intel can these people have when the last time they were in America was 50+ years ago? Hint: To spot the North Korean spy, look for the guy who dresses like the Beaver. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

  11. I am deeply saddened to say that Sammy Thistle passed away last night. For those of you that knew him, please PM me for more information (note, this was not skydiving related). For those of you that did not know him, Sammy was a very colorful person, a former Green Beret and man with a big heart. He was a tandem and AFF jumpmaster, and as of late was living in North Carolina. Condolances to Sammy's family and friends and all who knew him. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

  22. I HAVE heard about an incident (I believe it was reported in Skydiving or Parachutist). Guy cutaway and towed his main by the slider for a few hundred feet. Probably a one in a thousand thing, depending on newness of velcro and style of use, but still..... just use the front riser mods detailed above... works just fine and is quicker anyway... __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
  23. I assume you have a Precision retractable? If so, be prepared to replace / fix it (soon) when the pin either pokes through the side (see responses above) or clean through the type III tape making up the bridle itself. Just get a normal kill line. By developing a routine, cocking the kill line will become as normal a part of your packing as setting your brakes, which is something people don't normally forget. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
