Whatever. You can't even watch an entire SuperBowl. What kind of American are you? __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

Personally I think America is pretty gosh darn great, but what the heck are you smoking? Even aside from the refrigerator box people, there is a lot of housing in this country that is borderline third world and lacks hot water, heat, air conditioning, and a microwave (?!?!). You may be right that everyone has running water, but I doubt even that. They are called slums for a reason, not just that the wallpaper is dirty. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

I always refused to pack stuff older than 20 yrs for sport stuff. I always did extensive inspections of reserves, but past a certain point (and I admit 20 years is totally arbitrary) it is not worth the money I charged for a repack to do all the extra stuff I thought I should, like mulitple pull tests and the like... I know not everyone can afford new gear, but there is certainly enuff good used stuff out there at reasonable prices that people should be able to afford it. I always used to shake my head when people would bring in an old Wonderhog with a Preserve in it and say, "it's good enough" or "it works." Yeah, it works. So does a 57 Chevy, but I'd still rather have a car with airbags, ABS, seatbelts, etc. I am not trying to start a shit storm, I know Wonderhogs are great rigs, etc etc for their day, but this is not their day anymore. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

That's what my recruiter told me I was going to be when I enlisted in the reserves. Of course, I ended up an 0844 in the FDC because fucking Sgt Lang lied to me. He actually got busted for lying to recruits... Also, there was no ANGLICO platoon in my unit at all anyway, just a Naval Guns FO platoon full of 0861s, so I was REALLY lied to... If you recall from Desert Storm, the Iraqis attacked a Saudi border town called Khafgi (spelling?), and there was an ANGLICO reserve unit from Long Beach trapped in there for awhile, calling in arty on the Iraqis. Least I heard they were reservists from Long Beach... someone correct me... __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

Too late, I just chucked my laptop out a window into the lagoon. Scored two jellyfish with it though, which is nice. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

If anyone knows who coded this piece of shit application please kick them in the fucking ass for me. Trying to format any type of outline style document is such a goddamn fucking pain in the ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!! __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

Not meant in a wise-ass way at all... Would it have been quicker - safer to bite the bullet, call the authorities, take the bust, and have fire/rescue/sheriff help on this? Sounds like the rescue took a heck of a long time.... long enuff for pros to get there.... (not to degrade your buddies efforts of course). __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

PEOPLE!!! They are called "HEATERS"! __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

Yeah, I am not talking about on a personal level, rather on an institutional level. A Marine's green skivvy T shirt may have some unauthorized stencil on it that says "2/4 Recon Sniper Airborne, One Shot One Kill, Women and Children Die First" or something, but there is nothing visible to the rest of the world... __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

Don't have time to go through all the replies, but from an ex (reserve) Marine's perspective: Why the hell do all the Army units have doo-dads, badges and other stuff? In the Marines there was NOTHING to distinguish a high speed recon guy from an S1 type. This didn't seem to matter to anyone, and it was kind of a point of pride since we all took the "rifleman-first" concept to heart, something the Army seems to lack (witness the 507ths f'ed up performance in Iraq). I am more proud of making it through the School of Infantry short course that we had to go through than of getting through boot camp. Yes, I know you can kind of point 'em out by looking for scuba bubbles and jump wings, but that is the extent of it. And since a lot of non-recon (and non ANGLCO) guys wrangled slots in airborne and scuba schools anyway, that wasn't even much of an indicator.... I knew a lot of arty, S1, and S2 types who had jump wings... If you look at a Marine, all you see is rank insignia, an eagle globe and anchor emblem or two, and maybe some of the afore-mentioned bubbles and wings. Don't get me started on how the Corps now has name tapes on their cammies. I think that is f'ed up. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

Anvil, what the hell do you know about it? I was an infant drug mule, and I turned out JUST FINE thank you very much. I learned a lot. I think. I was pretty young and don't remember too much, plus I think I absorbed a lot of the stuff through my skin because the cocaine bags weren't sealed very well, so I have a few twitches now and again. But how many people can say they have been to Turkey, Columbia, Mexico, Egypt, Oman, and a whole host of other countries as a child? Not many, I'll bet. Why don't you (and the Fox News) just stay the hell out of it!!! __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

Hm, Americans aren't well liked by many Arabs...

FYI the "on it's back" thing was wishful thinking. And Tits Up is military slang for "F'ed Up". Don't want anyone to think I am making stuff up... __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do? -

I always wanted to post one of these news stories to the board. Was never really sure why people post news stories here when the headlines are readily available to anyone on the internet, but it feels DAMN good to be the first one to inform the DZ.COM readership that the Mars Rover is on it's back like a turtle, unable to transmit and watching the Mars buzzards circle ever closer..... DIE DIE DIE ROVER!!! http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=1&u=/ap/20040122/ap_on_sc/mars_rover_29 __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do? -
Yes, you are the man. Make sure to put this in your diary. It is a fine triumph! __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

The whole skyhook 5 thing is lame. I actually met the dude who came up with the idea. He came out to the DZ to ask the rigger (me) about certain aspects of the scheme. The fact that he thought he could get useful information about suspending a 747 from 5 parachutes from the likes of a senior parachute rigger should give you some indication of how realistic this guy is. Impression I got was of a well intentioned, but sadly un-informed old coot who wants to save the airline traveling public from a non-existent problem. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

In WWII we firebombed Japanese population centers under the (weak) rationale that since the population was mobilized for war production they were legit. targets. In WWII we bombed Dresden, which is now acknowledged to have had NO military value, (it is also known that we knew it at the time). In WWII we staged "maximum effort" sweeps of Germany, killing ANYTHING MOVING AND OUT IN THE OPEN IN THE DAYTIME (see the biography of Chuck Yeager). Yeager got it right when he said "If we are gonna do this stuff, we had better make sure we are on the winning side." Again, I ain't saying that we are the only ones that do it... just that WE DO (or DID) IT TOO. As regards the large caliber thing... I was not arguing for or against the "laws", just pointing out that WE violate them all the time. Yup, dead is dead, be it by shotgun, .50 call, 5.56mm, tankround, or suicide bomber. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

OK, shoulda been more clear. I am a student of military history (on my own), and I know that we have never carried out planned kamikaze style suicide attacks. I just have heard stories (the veracity of which I am not sure on) of "I am shot to shit, my plan won't fly, parachute is on fire, etc., might as well take out that building, etc." Yes, there are laws of war. You are not supposed to use large caliber weaponry (i.e. M2 .50cal, 25 mm Bradley Cannon, Apache Cannon) to shoot people. Believe it or not, SHOTGUNS are technically illegal under the Geneva Conv. We have violated ALL these laws. Take a look at some of the Apache footage from Basra Hwy from Gulf War I (clearly shooting the shit out of dudes on the ground). Read up on the use of M2 as sniper weapon in Korea and Vietnam. I was in the Marines. I would never lump our awesome pros in with the like of the Fed Saddam. I am just writing from a perspective of... perspective. Modern war became organized terrorism with the advent of strategic bombing (pioneered in the Spanish Civil War and refined by us in Dresden and Tokyo (I am never sure what to make of Hiroshima and Nagasaki)). Really. What is the moral difference in us blowing up a shitload of Iraqi civilians in two attempts to "get Saddam" at the beginning and end of the war, and them blowing up our guys (and some civvys) at a checkpoint. I see none. It is all horrible. We are just right because our hearts are in the right place. But that matters little to the dead of both sides. We invaded a soverign nation for no good reason (see the above War College post). While I am deeply saddened to see our guys dying, I am not surprised by the tactics used against us. To put it into perspective, if we were discussing the Afghan war and the Taliban, I would be out-hawking ALL the hawks on this board. Kill'em, Pacify'em, Save'em. But this war is bullshit. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ssi/pubs/2003/bounding/bounding.pdf Just a general post. This was in the news awhile back, not much was made of it. Keep in mind this document (which says the Iraq war was unnecessary) came from the actual US War College, though there is a disclaimer at the beginning (i.e. "these views do not necessarily ....") Interesting stuff. __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

LOL, this always cracks me up. We are overflying Iraq soverign territory and we act surprised when the Iraqis sometimes try and light 'em up with fire direction radar. What the hell do we expect? Similar to when the Fadayeem Sadam (sp?) started using suicide car bombs on our checkpoints in the actual ground war in March. The folks at CENTCOM called them terrorists. Shit, that is just dedication in my mind. It would be terrorism if they were blowing up civvys (like they are now, in increasing numbers), but to take out some of our military in a shooting war with a suicide car bomb is legitimate war fighting to me. Please do not misunderstand, I am not saying it is OK for our guys to die in war, just that in an actual shooting war, getting killed by a suicide car bomb is no different from getting shot or stepping on a mine or whatever. It's like calling the few American flyers in history who have purposely flown into targets to take 'em out (I can't quote times and dates, but this must've happened multiple times) terrorists. Sorry for the rant. Not really directed at you kmcguff... __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?
