From a high alt mal when do you cut away?
skyjunior replied to aspiff120's topic in Safety and Training
I had a friend who deployed at about 12000 and had a nice spinning mal, if he would have stayed with it until lower he probably would have been unconcious, so his malfunction was cut-a-way about 10000. He make the right choice and we got his canapy back and his freebag. PLEASE REMEMB -

I have been with my wife for 19 years and have been skydiving for the last 8 years. She has never limited my activities and has stood by me in times of injury, unemployment and distress. Out of the 52 weekends in a year I am probably gone 42 of them skydiving, fishing, motorcycling, hunting etc. Dee has about 10 static line/ AFF jumps and one tandem with me, however she decided skydiving just was not for her. I do not ever see her asking or demanding me to quit skydiving, but if she did and had valid reasons that I could agree with I would quit jumping. I am not going to let skydiving or any other activity come between her and I. I suppose I am a very lucky man to have found my soulmate who I would do anything for. PLEASE REMEMB

Best tandem student quote of my career...
skyjunior replied to mfrese's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A couple of years ago I was training a group of students for their tandem jumps and one of the more experinced tandem instructors was watching my briefing. I got to the part about them having to put their arms in the boxman position, and picked a student to dememonstrate on. The woman was about 40 and had her immediate and extended family with her, husband, kids, parents, siblings and in-laws, about 20 folks total. I placed the woman in front of me and had her demonstrate the hands on the harness position and gave her the signal to go to the boxman position.Well she did not put her hands up so I reached around to get her hands, but her hands were not there, she had dropped her hands to her side. Well I did get two solid handfulls of her chest. I was very embarassed and immediately apoligized, but her and her family thought it was very funny indeed. I finished the briefing and proceeded to the gear-up area and to my dismay the woman in question was to be my student. I again apoligized profusely and mentioned to her that I would get another instructor to take her the on jump. As I started to move towords manifest, she grabbed my arm and said she wanted to go with me, that after the tandem breifing she felt like she knew me and did not want to go with anyone else. She also mentioned that her sister saw the tandem briefing and she wanted to be my student also. All in all it turned out to be a great jump. I was very thankfull that she was not upset and took my mistake in good humor. Needless to say when I train students now I pay close attention to where their hands are. PLEASE REMEMB -

I broke my back{60% crush of L-1} on January 5th of this year in a work related accident. I got a really cool ride in an ambulance by A shift of the Mellville MO fire department. The paramedics did a great job as for as I was concerned and I sure am grateful for their quick response and help. I spent six days in the hospital and for a while there I was scared silly that I would not ever be able to walk without some sort of support. I have been in a plastic trunk cast for the last two months and have one more month of the cast. After that I think I am supposed to go through two to three months of physical and occupational therapy. Then hi ho hi ho it is back to work I go. My doc has said that I can start jumping again early 2005. So this year I will not be doing any tandems or videos but the DZO has said I will be able to do manifest, first jump course and take the tandem students train them and suit/harness them for the tandem instructors. I must say I am so grateful that my accident was not any worse and that I should be full on 100% in a year. I have been really lucky to have friends call and visit during my recovery. My wife has been an absolute saint and I do not know what I would have done without such a loving caring woman. The last several years I have made Quincy and Rantool and I plan on being there this year just in a non jumping capacity. I have always given a safety speech on the ride to altitude, but I wont be giving it this year. So all you skygods, skyjuniors, jumpers, tandem instructors, pilots, employed, unemployed, wuffos, wannabes, strangers, acquaintances and friends be safe. PLEASE REMEMB

When your student lands with the plane
skyjunior replied to EricTheRed's topic in Safety and Training
On our dropzone someone will stay with the student. I have rode the plane down with a couple of static line students before. In my opinion the student is the instructors main responsibility and should be their focus until the student is safe on the ground and gear off. PLEASE REMEMB -
I let and encourage the student to fly the chute, but at about 1500 feet I take over. Letting the student fly involves them in a cool experience. I used to let the student help me land, but on a couple of occassions there was a little miscommunication and/or confusion on landing and since then I have just felt more comfortable doing it myself. If the student is going through the tandem progression program then I will encourage them to help me land. PLEASE REMEMB

All you motorcycle people. What did you start riding on?

Two cutaways, they were lineovers I could not clear. The students were totally cool and bragged about the two rides for the price of one. I must say they were kind of unnerving as I did not think the reserve was ever going to deploy. I was lucky enough to have my first cutaway caught on tape by the video guy. PLEASE REMEMB

Tandem Masters- do you tip your packer or pilot
skyjunior replied to Chiquita's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It does not matter if a customer tips me or not. But I usually tip the packers after I have done a weekend of tandems. They are doing a job that is usually thankless, physically demanding, and in the summer very hot. On a good weekend we tandem instructors can make between 300 to 600 dollars. A 10 or 20 dollar tip to some of the hardest working guys and gals on the dropzone does not seem out of line. PLEASE REMEMB -
I just do 20 pull-ups a couple of times a day and a couple sets of dips and good to go. No machines or having to go to a gym. PLEASE REMEMB

When did you go over 1.4 W/L??
skyjunior replied to frankiebrina's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I did not nessarily downsize my canapy I up sized my my bodyweight about 25 pounds. PLEASE REMEMB -
If you get the smaller person to get " on you " you are going to really pick up some speed. Think tandem without a drogue. Several of my jumpmates have done similiar jumps and they scream. PLEASE REMEMB

Vertigo,Hypoxia or something medically wrong with me?
skyjunior replied to catfishhunter's topic in Safety and Training
We had a camera flyer have this happen to them about two years ago. We had a couple of skydiving doctors on the dropzone that day and they kind of checked him out. It appears that the video jumper had a slight cold.Additionally he used a bite switch on his still camera. We think what happened is when he put the bite switch in on final jump run he started breathing through his nose which had some congestion, end result was he did not get enough oxygen to stay lucid. He did not have a cypress on that jump either, but he did have one the following week. PLEASE REMEMB -
I started jumping in 1997 and was 41 years old, I now have over 1200 jumps including over 300 tandems, plus a instructor rating for static line. So my friend starting to jump in your forties is definetly not to old. PLEASE REMEMB
