purchasing still lens...beware when buying
BirdWoman replied to BirdWoman's topic in Photography and Video
I just wanted to post this for everybody to know so you don't get scammed when considering purchasing a still camera lens, mainly a Canon. It would suck to not get the lens you think you are buying. Today I purchased a Canon 10-22 lens from B&H Photo after several attempts to buy one cheaper from online camera stores. One store, Onewayphoto.com, told me that there are TWO EF-S lens...one with a plastic mount and one with a metal mount. This raised a flag so I hung up and called CanonUSA to verify. The lens specialist told me that there is indeed only one true Canon EF-S lens and it has a metal mount. After telling him where I found this other lens, he told me to be weary of online stores that offer lens for cheaper. He said that they have a list of several stores that offer these fake lens; because they are not genuine Canon, the warranty that comes with them are not honored by Canon. He suggested B&H, where I have done a lot of purchases in the past. When I went to B&H they had two lenses listed for a $30 price difference. I called to ask what the difference was. The guy I talked to said that the cheaper one is a "gray market" and not warrantied directly from Canon but from B&H. The more expensive one is from Canon USA and warrantied through Canon. I opted to go for the genuine one and purchased a 3year service plan for $83 (it will cover ANY damage to the lens regardless of how it got damaged. I asked if, in the event my helmet came off and went in if it would be covered, and he said yes). Long story short, buyer beware when buying an expensive lens from an online store...even if it saves you money. Spend the extra $$ and get what you are expecting to get. I figured that since there are records for everything now and us chicks are starting so set our own class of them (VRW, RW, etc), we should start our own swoop records. Sure it might not be as impressive as the guys but it's a record. I for one love busting out a long swoop (300'+) and being able to yell "Not bad for a chick, eh? Just wondering if there is one for distance. I know that there have been a couple of ladies with their card, but is there an actual official women's distance or speed record? "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

I just tried an organic energy drink today called Steaz Energy. It so rocks! I've been drinking energy drinks for way too long, my favs being RedBull and GoFast! I saw it at a local store and thought, "What the hell". WOW! Not only does it taste better than anything I have tried, but I think it works better as well. So, if you're in the mood for a new energy drink, find a natural grocer like Whole Foods or something like that and give it a shot. note: this is not an advertising gig for them...I just thought I would share something awesome that you might benefit from! Fuck! Words are coming so few this morning. You were such a good friend to so many, and a saint in times of need. The snowboarding trips we took. The wingsuit flights we made. The time spent at LP in your trailer catching up on lost time. I'll see you in the sky brother. Let's go fly again... I have a very small head myself and went with the Bonehead Optik, and size XS. I baked it for a total custom fit and 800 jumps later it still fits like a champ. It's comfy, snug and sturdy to easily support my PC9 and rebel XT on the top. Not to mention she could use it for stuff other than video flying, like freeflying/wingsuit/tracking/etc. Just a thought because it has worked so well for me... I am flying a jedi 105 as my second parachute but it was my primary for 500-600 jumps or so. It is airlocked which makes it nice flying in turbulent conditions. It is fully eliptical though, which makes it a high performance parachute. If it has the proper line set on it from Brian and not somebody else, then it will open smooth and on heading (unless you pack it wierd). The only time that it ever spun up on me was when it was way out of trim, but ever since a new line set it has not had any funky openings. It is a little more ground hungry than the sensei, and I also believe it is more ground hungry than the stiletto but am not 100% on that. The recovery arc with a lighter loading (under 1.4) is shorter than some of the high performance parachutes of today's world. Over all it is a very nice and reliable parachute. Like already stated, it is a high performance parachute so you would want to talk to somebody at your dropzone and evaluate your current canopy control to see if you are even ready for an eliptical. If you don't have one by now, shame on you! It is a super sweet piece and it is very nice being able to take the ring sight off the helmet for transportation/hop-n-pops, etc. Highly recommended. My battery always seem to last pretty long. I use it every weekend, sometimes 6-8 jumps a day, and I can't recall changing the battery any less than every 3 months or so. Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe it's the battery itself... "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Yup, they do! I sent my old neptune unit in to have a few buttons replaced. They went above and beyond my expectations and rather than fix my old unit, they sent me a new one. Usually all you hear is the bad, so here is some good for a change. THANKS ALTI-2! YOU GUYS ROCK! "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Even though the bike will be in my garage, and probably out at a remote dropzone when I ride it there, I still want full coverage just in case it did get stollen. I hate the thought of paying for the bike when it's not mine. If I had cash for a bike I would have no problem with going with a 2005 or 2006, but I don't. I hate taking out loans since they usually charge you up the a$$ with interest. So right now, that's why I either have to finance one or try to work something out payment wise with my friend. Right now Progressive is quick-quoting me less than Geico...odd since it was the other way around with the bike I have right now. Oh well. I wonder how much of a difference it makes if you say it the bike is for WORK rather than pleasure.. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

If I get the gixxer it will have to be full coverage as I will have to finance it. If I get the R6 then I can do whatever because I will be buying it from a friend and making payments to her rather than a bank. Does anybody have a newer street bike and a reasonable insurance company to go with it? I am looking at getting a newer bike (either a 2006 R6 or an 06-07 gixxer 600) and need to find a new insurance company. I got a quote from Geico and they quoted me at $3600/year . Any suggestions? That makes sense though. I have also noticed that the organic "cage free" eggs are not only better looking but are better tasting...they taste like eggs! Same with fruit and veggies. Maybe there really is some truth to this organic stuff.. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Doesn't really taste like milk. I bought a container of it yesterday 'cuz it wasn't much more expensive than regular milk, and there is something about it that is different. Neither my husband nor I can put a finger on what is different about it. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?? Shell, you make me smile. How is ol' Herc doing these days? I bet he wouldn't have stayed if it had been a REAL burger!! My brother found out with his cats that a wadded up piece of paper in an empty kleenex box will entertain three cats all day long. I guess it drives them crazy trying to get the paper out! "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

I was wondering about that when I ordered mine. Thanks for the heads-up. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me -
Hmmm. We'll have to think about that one. He is starting to explore some now. Just a minute ago he was sitting on top of my head playing with my hair--Shell, it hasn't been cut in like two months now so it's getting kinda long. I keep telling you...Angus is what Texans call a good steak! So far he is adjusting well. I went to the store to pick up a few things, and when I got home I found that Velo had been playing in the freshly watered bamboo pot. I have to admit the muddy kitten paws on the wall were way cute! Given that it's his first night home, he hasn't given our border collie too many growls. My other cat is mad at me but she'll adjust. I'm just glad I was able to save a life today. It always makes you feel good. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

My hubby and I decided to get another kitty, so today I went and rescued a kitten from a local Houston kill shelter. A better way to sat it is that he adopted me! He is a 3-4 month old orange tabby and is an absolute love. Can you tell he's happy to have a new home??
