Check your pins before every jump!
JohnMitchell replied to jacketsdb23's topic in Safety and Training
If it was a student on rental gear, I'd change the orientation to our DZ's policy. Experienced people,I'd ask if it looked funky to me. When you say "Yes, I check both my pins before every jump." do you mean you do it yourself or you have someone do it. I admit I check pins before putting on the rig and do checks of 3 on the plane, but rarely get a pincheck. -
The scenario that killed Goose in Top Gun actually happened, I've heard, to a least a couple of back seaters in the A model Tomcats.

Like to add that if you DO have to move around, covering your BOC handle with your right hand is a good idea. Take it from someone who had a premature deployment after climbing out front float. -
Career Opportunities in Skydiving
JohnMitchell replied to jamhi07's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Continue to jump and gain experience. With your engineering skill set you may find some opportunities in this sport. Will they pay as well as other industries? I doubt it. Maybe better to get the good paying job in the real world and skydive on the side. But good luck to you. -
I've known and talked to 3 people who have ejected, one of them twice. It can be quite the rough ride, often with injuries. I'm not sayin' it wouldn't be fun, but maybe it wouldn't be fun.

Hell yeah, looks fun. You may have only one minion, but he's a bigun. -

Advice on core strengtening exercises?

Oh yeah? I have 4 kids. -
Do you remember when they didn't have the hook knives on the harnesses? I watched the accident that made the change.

How's your upper body strength? Was that an issue with your flare or just bad timing on your part? -
I can help you with that problem. Where do you live? I bookmarked that recipe. I just might try that some time. Looks gooooooood!

Dayum. Glad there's no femur sticking out of there. -

And Now For Something Completely Different

Ahh, a blast from the past. Like that song, saw the Mothers a couple of times live. Don't remember if they played that song, though. Reminds me of a black family in SLC, UT that had a little white jockey on the lawn. Cracked me up when I first saw that. What a great sense of humor. -
Good job.

Some 727s have been fitted with hush kits, but I still think they are noisier than most. Lower by-pass ratio jet engines are just inherently noisier.

Super agree. I love it when my AFF students get some tunnel time prior to level 1.

Horizontal Relative Work

I admire your over-confidence. How many funerals have you been to? -
Sorry to hear that. He left too soon. As a Utah jumper, I ran into Dr. Dave from time to time, even camping in his living room at one of the old Searchlight, NV boogies years ago. Super good guy, did a lot of great things for the sport. He will be missed.

Instructor Helmets - what are you using and why?
JohnMitchell replied to DougH's topic in Tandem Skydiving
Yep, sure like my G3 for tandems. Easy to open and talk under canopy. -
Yep, I've felt that way about the first day of skiing too.

I see you have a copy of Life magazine from when Neil and Buzz walked on the moon. I remember that issue brand new in the mailbox, shortly after having spent a summer week glued to the TV, watching every minute of that amazing mission. F-16 first flight? Too cool for words. -
Although our DZ puts AFF out after Free fliers, we still use enough time delay between exits to ensure longitudinal, or horizontal, separation along the jumprun line. Even though the student pulls as high as 5,500', the instructors may open as low as 2500' (2000' just a year or so ago). Also, more than one skydiver has had a premature opening. I saw one at 7000' last summer on a freefly jump. You can take vertical differences into account when arranging exit order, but if you're using only vertical separation, you're rolling the dice every time.

I did pick up a G3 and have been using it exclusively ever since. Fun jumps, free fly, AFF and tandems; I enjoy it for everything. Takes just a second to open or close the face shield, easy to talk to the student on jump run and under canopy.
