  1. That's not a joke. That's the truth.
  2. Damn, and here I thought I was a skydiver.
  3. They lost me at "1300' climb." Now, if I could rappel down to it. . .
  4. My condolences to all who knew him. It's a shame this happens. We have to realize skydiving has its risks, and BASE multiplies those risks many times over.
  5. Not all of us are shocked
  6. You know, I broke my altimeter today so I was jumping without one. I just couldn't bring myself to trust my wife and son that much with the breakoff altitude. I broke 500' early twice.
  7. A whole lot of looks, not too many comments. Gotta a lot of shocked people out there?
  8. Billvon's numbers are probably well beyond most of us... over 64K posts and going strong. Yeah, but I'm very glad to read his posts. He usually knows what he's talking about.
  9. Made ya a clicky. What would have been really funny? If one of the guys had gone for it.... Her turn to freak out.
  10. I'm just under 3:1, about 18K posts, 6.4K jumps. I should post less, I know.
  11. Isn't that great? We've been getting daily salads out of our garden too. Can't beat tomatoes fresh from the vine.
  12. "Is my light on?" Not really. If it's a tandem, it's "Let's go have some fun." If it's AFF, "Good arch, smile, okay?" If it's my wife it's "Do that thing with your tongue."
  13. I think what you're trying to say is that a good jumper may overestimate the skills of over jumpers. I think I've done that when organizing skydives. As far as working with students or coaching, I plan for the best but I'm ready for the worst. I often "rewrite the game plan" while in freefall.
  14. We were hiking a short trail there in May, just north of the highway, and saw a very nice 12+ footer. No longer being at the top of the food chain, I gave him a very wide berth.
  15. Back in the 80's and early 90's the Portland OR Air National Guard flew the F-4 Phantoms and I worked a ton of their missions. It seemed like those old F-4s were good for at least one emergency a month. Something was always breaking on them.
  16. I have his autograph. I met him at a restaurant in Texas '66 or so. He was having breakfast at the same place as my Cub Scout group. Our den leader knew him and took us over to meet him.
  17. I've taken still pictures for evidence while investigating a fatality. Not a pleasant thing at all. It was back in the day of film cameras, and not my camera. The pictures turned out not to be needed and I'm pretty sure the camera owner destroyed those pictures. That's what I would do.
  18. When I was 19 I was getting my annual physical from the long time family doctor. He said "John, you're in perfect shape. Quit skydiving."
  19. I remember seeing both the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds when they were flying the F-4s. Damn impressive.
  20. How come the lawyers on here aren't chiming in? Oh. They are lawyers. For 30-40% I'll bet they'd take up the cause. Hopefully it's a lost cause, and they already know it. Depression is a very common result after a life changing injury like that. I've had friends who have been hurt worse, but decided they still wanted to enjoy their lives. I admire that kind of determination and spirit.
  21. I long ago saw the results of those kinds of injuries. After a few married years of "on-off-on-off" with my wedding ring while jumping, working with power tools, etc., I just put it in a drawer for safe keeping. Everyone knows I'm married anyway.
  22. WHAT? You need to use a longer fuze next time.
