I'm hoping to get to one this spring. Just curious.
-
What are the questions you'd ask?
-
What's an orange jump?
-
I don't know. I've never had the opportunity to teach anybody who was deaf. I guess I'd have to ask one of the deaf guys in here how they learned. If the radio just quits working on somebody, they're supposed to fly the normal pattern and land in half breaks and PLF, but a deaf student would probably get sick of doing that real quick.
-
Yes, I learned on radio. And yes, where I learned we were taught "canopy control", "landing pattern" and "how to read a wind-sock"... But they tell you that if you don't have radio you fly your pattern and land in 1/2 brakes and PLF. We give them 2 or 3 on full radio, then 2 or 3 where they fly their own pattern and we flare them, then a couple more where we give them a countdown (50ft...40ft...30...20...) and they're supposed to flare themselves around 10 feet. Then if they do ok on those we leave the radio in for a couple more jumps, but just monitor how they're doing and only talk to them if they're really f&*king up. Even with all that radio, we still managed to break our fair share of students. I guess that's why I was so surprised to hear that people did it without radios.

I like using tongue switches best, but they seem to break a lot more often than the others. I kept getting little holes in the membrane allowing moisture in there and it messes them up. I went through 4 of them last season. Conceptus is great about it when they break. They will replace it for free, but they won't send the new one until the you send them the broken one so you're going to be without a switch for a week. If you're going to go with a tongue switch you should probably buy two of them so you have one to use while the other is being shipped.

First paid tandem.....chop!!.......anyone else?
NSEMN8R replied to ShaggyFord's topic in Instructors
I have both Strong and Vector ratings and can see pros and cons to both systems. Just curious, what exactly is it about the Strong rig that makes it substandard in your opinion? -
I'm really surprised that many places have done it without radios. I guess we're spoiled nowadays. The paddles sound like a cool idea. It seems like a lot of people would get lost though. When I do a tandem with someone, I'll usually ask them after opening if they can find the landing area. ALOT of them can't. Some can't even find it even when I try to pont it out. I can just imagine them trying to find a guy down there on the ground with paddles.

You must have smarter students than us It's usually at least 5 or 6 jumps before we take away the radio. Do you teach them to flare themselves or do they just pound in in half brakes the first few jumps?
-
Is there anyplace that doesn't use them? Every dz that I've jumped at uses radios for their students. How could you possibly do it without radios? Unless you're using round canopies.
-
I bet it's cuz you throw your pilot chute out on the right so there's less chance of it getting snagged.
-
All of the above.
-
Now that's a great idea! Where do I sign up?
-
It probably won't work on me anyways. Those tubes will just automatically fuse themselves back together. Actually, I'm a little worried that when they cut them open that shit will go airborne. This whole city will be knocked up.

My wife wants to have a vasectomy done on me. There's another thread going on right now about jumping after having it done, and a few people have mentioned some really fucked up stuff happening. This post in particular really got to me: I'm not really worried about recovery time. I'll lay in bed for a month if I have to (the weather is crap here anyways). But what are the odds of something terrible like this happening to me during the operation? Or afterwards even if I take it easy? If you've had it done, how bad did it suck? Thanks...

Bonehead Flat Top Pro Just Arrived from Out West

Have you jumped it yet? Good luck with it. I bought one earlier this year and I absolutely hated jumping it. I ordered it custom sized for my head. On the ground it fit snugly but comfortably. At altitude the liner swelled up so much that I could barely put my face in it. Once I got it on it felt like it was going to pop my head like a zit! I could seriously hear and feel the blood pumping in my head. It was by far the most uncomfortable helmet I've ever worn. I put about 100 jumps on it and it never got any better. Last week I traded it for a base rig so at least it wasn't a complete waste of money. I never hear of anybody else complaining about it so maybe I'm just being a big fat pussy. Seriously, I hope you have better luck with it than I did. -
I was ready to quit earlier this year. It was starting to seem too much like work. I had forgotten that it was fun until I found a dz that would let me on a load without a student strapped to me once in a while. I like doing tandems, but when that's all you do, it becomes work.

Thanks man. I earned it. I have 5 kids and I'm 34 years old. They're 11, 8, 4, and twin 3 year olds. You should see the looks on the poor female tandem student's faces when the skydivers tell them what they call me. If anyone needs help getting pregnant just post a pic.

I'm currently in first place with .02 cm. Please don't anybody beat me or I'll be up all night playing this stupid thing...

Pam is hot, but the only one that even comes close to Halle Berry is Angelina Jolie.
-
um...eewwwww. Looks like a guys overdeveloped pecs that went soft. I gotta agree with ReBirth, Kris. That's gross.
-
dude.. How can you possibly say she's not hot. Halle Berry takes up a good chunk of the space in my spank bank.
-
What? You have to be either kidding or gay. Halle Berry is the hottest chick on the planet.

Swordfish-- Halle Berry

I just started getting into base recently and I'm loving it, but I doubt I will ever totally abandon skydiving for it. I like flying my skydiving canopy too much. Besides, my skydiving money pays for my base gear.
