    Why is it?

Good reply, Tom. In years' past, the golden number was 100 for an experienced jumper or manufacturer to instruct you. We've seen this number slowly increase in recent years. When we started organizing Bridge Day, there was no official minimum number so we set it at 50. As Tom mentioned, Bridge Day is unique and we're comfortable with this number. But we often overlook the "type" of person that wants to start BASE jumping. I've seen jumpers with 1000+ skydives that have no business leaping off a bridge. And conversely, I've seen people with no skydives who I'd be completely comfortable in throwing off my local bridge. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

    Ever tried this?

Bad idea in my opinion. For awhile, Basic Research delivered their Fox canopies in the mid-90's with a very similar configuration. Sometimes jumpers would have momentary toggle hang-ups due to the bump. The idea behind the design was that only a small section of control line could be replaced when brake settings wore out. Edit: If you can find a way to keep the bump from catching in the toggle keeper, then the design might catch on. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

    Travel Channel

The Globe Trekker team attended Bridge Day 2005 and filmed quite a bit. An episode about the Eastern USA contains a 4-7 minute segment about BASE and Bridge Day. I've got a DVD copy of the episode, but haven't seen it air yet. More info here: http://www.globetrekkertv.com/ (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Tom and I will have to warn our young daughters about the new DiCola kid on the block. Congrats to Donk and Cali. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

    bridge day

I don't think the NPS has done anything this year that's out of the ordinary. The only real change I heard was the January 2007 retirement of Cal Hite, the NPS superintendent at New River. Cal has never been a big supporter of BASE jumping. Cya in 3 weeks. Let's all have fun and be safe this year. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

  9. Along those same lines, I am looking for someone to film or help film Bridge Day 2006. Triax recently cancelled. You and/or your team can film the event for me and I will edit and distribute, or you can film/edit/distribute the event yourself. Email me if interested (click on BASE428 at left for email address). 10. Avenfoto, I'll also keep my ear open to anyone looking to split a room. I did just find out that the Holiday Inn must contractually withhold 18 of their 119+ rooms for people going into basic training. These rooms are often not filled and will be released to jumpers on FRIDAY MORNING (Oct. 20). So, if you still need a room, you can always show up Friday morning and ask for any gov't rooms that were unclaimed. They will give you the room for Fri and Sat at that time. Good luck. Cya all soon. Bridge Day Website

Without getting into too much detail, the bridgeday.com folks got the domain many years ago and then tried to trademark the "Bridge Day" name. The Bridge Day Commission later sued them and received the trademark. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

  13. If so, I could really use your help. I'm working on a project for work that involves GPS guided parachute systems and one of our fabricators isn't returning calls or emails. He's making the most critical part of our project and he's jeopardizing my job. Here is his name and address: Pete Vougiouklakis Virtual Factory Engineering 48665 Structural Drive Chesterfield Twp., MI 48051 I'd be willing to send you some free BASE jumping DVD's if you can track this guy down for me and let him know that he needs to call me. Maybe you could stop by his office on your way home? Or simply leave a sticky note in his mailbox telling him to contact me. Many thanks if you can help. Cya. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. 14. Did you try the Quality Inn? They held 50 rooms for jumpers this year, although they might be gone by now. You can always camp at the Holiday Inn for $20 a night with hot showers. It's a pretty good deal and more people are taking advantage of it lately. Also, check the Bridge Day Lodging page for more hotels: http://www.bridgeday.info/lodging.php (c)2010 Vertical Visions. sold out

One hour sounds pretty normal, at least in the last few years. The waiting list is a good thing to be on, as several rooms always open up in the next few weeks. The Holiday Inn must contractually hold 15+ rooms for a military commitment, but they're usually released to the waiting list shortly before Bridge Day. Don't forget, you can also camp at the Holiday Inn and still have hot showers each day. Let me know if anyone has any questions or needs assistance with hotels. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. 16. After a leap from the Captain to get my BASE #, I ran into mama bear 30' away and standing on her hind legs with a few cubs nearby. Adrenaline and a little luck kept me from getting mauled and allowed me to make a phone call a few hours later to Jean Boenish. It sucks to suddenly not be at the top of the food chain... Nice pics of your bear, SabreDave. Sometimes getting to the object is more dangerous than jumping. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

  18. What you really need is a BASE parachute made from "Cuben Fiber". It has the feel of a Walmart shopping bag, but is considerably stronger than F111 with lower pack volume. Absolutely amazing stuff that has been tested in skydiving canopies. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

  20. I can see how the insurance can cause problems. As some of you know, this year I had to find a $1 million dollar policy for Bridge Day. After some serious searching, I got a reasonable policy. The NPS might reget having insurance as a requirement, because the agent who helped me is now helping another group with some legal jumps. They probably don't realize it yet, but the NPS is helping us open new legal sites everywhere. If anyone wants to know who my insurance agent is, I'm glad to forward that information to you. My agent is now pretty familiar with BASE jumping. Cya. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

  23. My comment about jumping non-TSOed gear with an FAA waiver was made in reference to the 1997 WFFC low-altitude balloon jumps. Since some people made inaccurate statements like "base is illegal" and "jumping a base rig from an aircraft is illegal", I thought I would provide arguments. It's comical to see skydivers get all worked up about having BASE gear on a balloon. My BASE rig is far more reliable than a line-twisting elliptical. And as the organizer of a large BASE event, I happily (but nervously) accept skydivers who bring their Wonderhogs and PD 9-cells. But the real issue here is turning the jumper in to the FAA. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.
  24. Not necessarily correct. I wish Avery would chime in here and tell us about the above-mentioned 1997 WFFC low-altitude balloon jumps. I believe you can jump non-TSOed gear from an aircraft with an FAA waiver. As much as everyone wants to separate BASE Jumpers and Skydivers, we must keep in mind that we are all parachutists.... (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.
  25. Please name any specific law that makes BASE illegal? And please don't say "all national parks", because I hold/held a permit to LEGALLY BASE jump in a certain National Park for the last 4 years. My point is that you sound like a whuffo when you say that "BASE is illegal". It's not an illegal sport. I have hundreds of completely legal BASE jumps. Please don't spread false information, as you should know better by now. In 1997, there was a completely legal BASE balloon event at the WFFC. I was there, but the winds kept the balloon on the ground. It was perfectly legal and reportedly FAA-approved. The bottom line is that turning ANY jumper in to the FAA is a no-no. You wouldn't want BASE jumpers to start turning skydivers into the FAA when your reserve is a few days out of date.... (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.
