While the major dropzones continue to entertain the hard core team jumpers i.e., Deland etc. dozens of smaller DZ's on which the majority of people in this sport depend have turned almost totally to the profit making operation of tandems to the detriment of fun jumpers on their way up to hard core. I am amazed, shocked, shocked that a guy/gal will spend $30K on a car but when stepping out of an airplane at 13K will opt for the most inexpensive crap he can find. Hell man, It's your life - go first class including a new Cypres II and RSL. Live to jump another day. Freefall Hall

In all sincerity I must disclose skydiving's downfall as a sport and emergence as a profit making industry. Dropzones are little more than tandem factories at the present time.

I think that you have picked an excellent topic for your paper. I have been jumping for 42 years and have seen the sport evolve from a few hardy souls to a huge money making industry. The whole character of the sport has changed to accomondating one time thrill seekers and pseudo professional competitor types. No longer do a couple hardy souls seek out a rental plane and with surplus military gear guts out an exit from a couple thousand feet. If DZ's continue to change operations into tandem factories than the future of fun jumpers is bleak indeed. I realize that tandems pay the bill but it sure doesn't help jump rates to moderate for fun jumpers and the equipment costs are escalating out of sight. It is sad to see such a great sport slowly turn into a commercial venture geared to the one time thrill seeker or competition geeks. Freefall Hall

I read recently where Aerodyne is offering two week delivery on rigs. I ordered a new rig December 1st. It was delivered in the middle of April. The bad part is I sold my other rig and made arrangements to spend March and April in Deland to do some jumping. The end result is I had less than two weeks to jump because of the 19 week delay in delivering my Aerodyne.

Fact is a grenade generally has an 8 second delay and one confronted with a thrown grenade immeidiate reaction is to attempt to grab it and toss it away before it explodes. In these cases grateful buddies who survive are anxious to reward the one who attempted to rid themselves of the danger. I have been there and although never had to react to this paricular situation am aware of the particulars. Medals cost nothing and I do not mind the awarding of medals but my experience is that most instances have little real "heroism" attached.Quote Freefall Hall
